Ginerous · 17/09/2023 09:22

any recommendations for crime/thriller/detective series or standalone books. Going through a heartbreak and need the distraction.

I’ve read and enjoyed:
Wallander
Wisting
Barbarotti
Van Veteran
Jussi Adler Olsen’ Karl Merk
girl with the dragon tattoo series

also Jane Casey’s Maeve Kerrigan series
Elly Griffiths - prefer Ruth Galloway to Harbinder
jackson brodie
Inspector Wexford

also enjoy
Liz Nugent
Sabine Durrant
louise candlish
Lisa Jewell

I don’t like historical series or anything supernatural. I’ve tried but didn’t love
Simon Serailler
Tana French
Cormoran Strike

would be grateful for any recommendations!

thanks.

I really, really enjoyed Lars Kepler's series, I unknowingly started with a mid series book (The Rabbit Hunter) so went back to the start and was hooked.

I've also read most of a series by Jussi Adler Olsen, but found them hit and miss.

Just finished Kate Bold's first book The Killing Game, it's very short which is perfect for me atm (have a baby and short attention span). I'm waiting for the next book to be available at the library.

WonkyBricks · 17/09/2023 09:30

Sorry just reread and you've read Jussi Adler Olsen 🤦‍♀️

Yrsa Sigurdadottir - I like her early novels best

Not scandi: Jane Harper (Aussie) and sue Grafton (US) - she’s a classic

mrsfeatherbottom · 17/09/2023 10:21

I really like Ragnar Jónasson - start with Snowblind.

Ginerous · 17/09/2023 10:55

Thanks for these. I’ve read all of Jane Harper’s books and enjoyed them. Also tried Yrsa Siguradottier - have read Snowblind and a few others but got a bit tired of them a few books in.

Tried Rebus and Sue Grafton many years ago, along with Scarpetti but will revisit.

I read the first Lars Kepler and found it a bit too OTT but might revisit also. I’ve also read Stefan Arnhem series which was good but very violent.

Thanks for the other recommendations, I’ll check them out. I listen to a lot on audio when I’m driving/ walking so sometimes I’m a bit fussy about narrators. Should have also mentioned Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole series which I liked and The Wild Isles series which is very good if anyone is looking for a series with a good female lead.

Anders de la Motte (Swedish)

ChrisPriss · 17/09/2023 11:19

Will Dean's Tuva Moodyson series - starts with "Dark Pines"

carkerpartridge · 17/09/2023 11:22

I have enjoyed
Carin Gerhardsen - Hammarby series)
Jo Nesbo - Midnight Sun and Blood on Snow, both of which are fairly short
Karin Fossum - the ones I read weren't too long so they were another good for a quick fix of Scandi noir!
Tom Rob Smith - The Farm which is set in Sweden

DisplayPurposesOnly · 17/09/2023 11:25

Also the Martin Beck series. I've only heard them as radio plays but they were books originally and there are TV adaptations

Arnaldur Indriðason

Start with Jar City

He is from Iceland so might be interesting if you're looking for Scandi noir

Umanresources · 05/10/2023 13:47

I enjoyed the Camilla Lackberg Fjällbacka Books, but the last one was published in 2017 and ended on a bit of a cliffhanger!

LizardOfOz · 05/10/2023 13:50

Karen Pirie series by Val Mc Deirmid. Excellent
And she has a standalone one too... can't remember the name but it's about a girl who goes missing in an isolated village...

I enjoyed these books too.

highlandcoo · 05/10/2023 14:39

@LizardOfOz was the Val McDermid book 1979? I really enjoyed that. Unfortunately 1989 wasn't nearly as good.

LizardOfOz · 05/10/2023 19:12

@highlandcoo I had a chance to google it .
It's called A Place of Execution

I started 1979 on audible. Couldn't get into it

I quite enjoyed Anne Holt's books - she’s Norwegian. Adaptations of her novels turned up in the BBC 4 Saturday night Scandi slot under the title 'Modus' a few years back.

If you’re going to the other extreme and want crime fiction-lite (very lite indeed) I'd recommend the Sandhamn books of Viveca Sten. They’re nominally centred around a policeman but set on a beautiful Swedish island and basically just easy, feelgood reads when you don’t want to be bothered with anything too demanding.

Also - Peter Hoeg Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow/Miss Smilla's sense of snow (depending on which edition you buy) - a Danish/Greenlandic/Arctic thriller

Violetparis · 03/01/2024 00:07

I'm enjoying reading Death Under A Little Sky - Stig Abell. Rural England setting, nice short chapters so easy to read.

Welshwabbit · 04/01/2024 15:55

Just recommended this elsewhere so adding it here too - Asa Larsson's Rebecka Martinsson series is great.

SchnozzaHoomum · 04/01/2024 20:04

You are all fantastic. Thank you.
