Demon Copperhead is all it's cracked to be. Brilliant book.

The Rachel Incident is my favourite of the year though.

JimmyGrimble · 16/09/2023 14:16

Lessons in Chemistry is brilliant.

evtheria · 16/09/2023 14:20

I also have just read The Four Winds, was fascinating (and emotional).

Pleaseme · 16/09/2023 14:24

Mark Billingham Rabbithole
Jp Delaney The girl before

For easy holiday reading, I've enjoyed reading Taylor Jenkins Reid's books (particularly Daisy Jones and Malibu Rising).

Currently reading Isabel Allende Long Petal of The Sea which I'm really enjoying.

LOVED Still Life (read it last summer).

I've struggled to get started on Demon Copperhead, but will keep trying.

If you've not already read them: Life After Life or Any Human Heart are brilliant (and I tend to read whatever William Boyd writes, I like his style).

Also recently enjoyed The Underground Railroad (but this is NOT an easy pleasant read), The Garden of Evening Mists, Sorrow and Bliss and Hot Milk.

@EmmaStone we have very similar taste in books. With the exception of Hot Milk which is on my TBR pile, I’ve read and loved all of your recommendations.

I’d also second Kala and Notes on an execution that I’m currently reading.

Once upon a river by Diane Setterfield is also excellent.

EmmaStone · 16/09/2023 15:29

@TattiePants ooh, love it when that happens!! Will look up your recs too!

Xanadu58 · 16/09/2023 15:31

I recently read life, death and vanilla slices by Jenny Eclair . Highly recommended.

Bruisername · 16/09/2023 23:05

Lonely castle in the mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura was a really lovely book

the Seishi Yokomizo detective books

out by natsuo kirino

4 sided triangle by William temple

MrsALambert · 16/09/2023 23:11

I’ve just finished The Wedding Dress Sewing circle which was an easy read. Lovely story set in WW2 and based on a true story

aswellascanbeexpected · 16/09/2023 23:17

What sort of reading do you want?
Demon Copperhead is a masterpiece, but deals with tragic and challenging situations, albeit ultimately uplifting. Totally breathtaking book
Lessons in Chemistry is almost a fantasy very unrealistic, but a very entertaining read with a likeable main female character.
American Dirt, fast paced and a thriller,
For pure nonsense fun this year I enjoyed Someone Else’s Shoes by Jo Jo Miles.
Enjoy your time to read, bliss!

tammie49 · 16/09/2023 23:27

Notes on an Execution by Dana Kukafta
The Hearts Invisible Furies by John Boyne (I adored this book)
Isaac And The Egg by Bobby Palmer is a wonderful book.

Hercisback · 16/09/2023 23:30

Black butterflies is absolutely brilliant.

The marriage portrait and Demon copperhead I'd also recommend.

I'm also reading tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow and enjoying it.

QuitChewingMyPlectrum · 16/09/2023 23:33

Those People Next Door
by Kia Abdullah

Hugely recommend

commonground · 16/09/2023 23:36

Another vote for The Marriage Portrait.

Or if you want easy but smart holiday reads, then deffo Taylor Jenkins Read - Malibu Rising is a classic beach read.

Or Curtis Sittenfeld (Eligible or Romantic Comedy or The American Wife)

IdaPrentice · 16/09/2023 23:43

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt - just brilliant, really stays with you

Ihaveamagicwand · 16/09/2023 23:50

Another vote for Once upon a River, A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch, The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley

YapYap2023 · 16/09/2023 23:55

A prisoner of birth, by Jeffrey Archer.

This is the 2nd of his books that I've read, and I really enjoyed this one (as well as the first).

The first was the first in the Cliftonville chronicles series, and I'm looking out in charity shops for the rest.

orangelotus · 17/09/2023 15:30

just finished Demon Copperhead and am now bereft

massistar · 18/09/2023 15:18

Demon Copperhead for me too. Followed by Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Still Life was my favourite book from last year.

massistar · 18/09/2023 15:20

For utter light relief though I adored the Court of Thorn and Roses series by Sarah J Maas. Told all my friends about it and it's now known by all of us as "the Fairy porn series". 🤣

lasciviousoldram · 18/09/2023 15:22

I've just finished Kingdom of Shadows by Barbara Erskine. I've never read any of her books before but had a credit to use on Audible so took the plunge. It's a timeslip ghost story with a bit of romance, although that's not the main theme of the book. It's not new by any means but I really enjoyed it and found it a bit spooky.
