I just finished Such a fun age, by Kiley Reid. I’d say it was pretty good. It was readable and I got into it, I was curious. I liked how it touched on race relations in a different way. I disliked all the characters though, but I guess that makes them more realistic. Would pass it on but probably not read again.

Who’s next?

I've just finished The Parisians by Marius Gabriel.

Set in WW2 centred on characters living/working at The Ritz. I loved it, it's fiction but weaves in historical figures including Coco Chanel, French film star Arletty and prominent Nazi figures.

EarlyBirdCatchesTheWorm · 23/10/2023 21:09

Tender is the Flesh - yikes!!!

Lovewine1975 · 23/10/2023 21:13

My last book was The Survivors by Jane Harper, really enjoyed it a slow burning thriller with great characters and very atmospheric

coolmum123 · 23/10/2023 23:10

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. It's a great read. Got into it quite quickly, felt that it slowed down a bit in the middle and I was wondering where it was going but the ending was so good. Great characters.
Have to figure out what I am going to read next now!!!

Take Me Instead
Debut novel by Faye Stevenson.
Great Characters with lots of twists.

AutumnCrow · 24/10/2023 19:04

Graham Linehan Tough Crowd.

It's a brilliant read, bitter-sweet and ebullient.

lljkk · 24/10/2023 19:37

Just finished Rowing to Alaska, Wayne McLennan. Beautiful writing, although shocking in places.

HRTQueen · 25/10/2023 01:29

The Beach Alex Garland

it was on tv a few weeks ago I watched about five minutes of it and decided to re read the book. I first read it when it came out and I was about to go to Thailand (for the second time) I don’t want to go

it’s a brilliant book, I did the traveller thing around SE Asia so recognised the ridiculous self absorbed notions we often have

ForfarBridie · 25/10/2023 01:37

Loyalty. The new book by Martina Cole that was released last week. It was harrowing and rather slow in places but I did enjoy it.

KohlaParasaurus · 25/10/2023 02:45

Sushi for Beginners by Marian Keyes. Drivel, not very engaging, didn't make me want to binge on the author's back catalogue.

Amdone123 · 25/10/2023 03:51

@KohlaParasaurus it's not her best. Last Chance Saloon is really good, if you want to try again !

KohlaParasaurus · 26/10/2023 20:09

@Amdone123 thanks for the recommendation. I'll look out for Last Chance Saloon. I'd previously read The Break and enjoyed some of the side stories involving peripheral characters but been frustrated by the inevitability of the outcome.

Putin's People by Catherine Belton

Quite fascinating story of how former KGB officers took over Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Inconvenient people "falling" out of windows played a part

AuntieDolly · 27/10/2023 08:14

I've just finished The Maid and wish I hadn't bothered.

Springduckling · 27/10/2023 14:48

Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. Brilliant book, very well written.

Then managed to find the TV adaptation on Sky Atlantic and that was really well done and well worth a watch with an excellent cast and beautiful scenery. Based on the book, not a copy

Thank you @StrangePaintName

The Armour of Light, Ken Follett

This is the fourth book in the Kingsbridge series, set between 1790-1815 ish.

I am a big KF fan, I first read The Pillars of the Earth about 15 years ago and it remains one of my favourite books. I think he's a brilliant story-teller, but this just seemed a bit samey. I did enjoy it, but didn't devour it like I normally would with his books (apart from Never which I thought fell quite a bit short). Somehow felt rushed, with no so much detail as he normally fills his books with.

I'm not sure he can write anymore in this series now.

Bruisername · 29/10/2023 15:37

Just read Sweet Bean Paste which was a nice read

currently halfway through the Palace of the Peacock and struggling to continue

Winter42 · 29/10/2023 15:48

I've just finished the most fun we ever had. It did take me quite a while to get into it but I was enjoying it by the end.

My favourite book recently had been Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. It's about a couple of friends who create a gaming company, but it's more about their friendship than games.

Singsonggsu · 29/10/2023 15:51

The Vanishing of Margaret Small by Neil Alexander - such a beautiful story beautifully told ❤️

Isthiscorrect · 29/10/2023 20:13

Just reread The Far Pavillions by MMKaye. Last read it almost 40'yeqrs ago! Loved it as much this time as last time.

blueshoes · 29/10/2023 20:20

Now reading Dark Matter by Blake Crouch which reads like a film.

Read that in one sitting. When I finally put the book down, I was thinking 'what did I just read'. My mind was properly blown.

blueshoes · 29/10/2023 20:31

I am currently on holiday, so binge reading on my kindle. Thriller, mysteries, horror - nothing high brow. All page turners, plot-based.

The Family Upstairs - Lisa Jewell. Possibly overhyped. I did enjoy it. Quite an outlandish scenario, essentially cuckoo-ing the home of a wealthy couple and the childrens' perspective. Parts were predictable and it all came together in the end.

The Breakdown - Arianne Richmond. Set in a very remote island in Maine. A missing child. A marriage that is not what it seems. Many suspects. You can almost guess the mastermind but not quite sure how it was done. Happy ending too. Bad people get just desserts ex-judicial.

coolmum123 · 31/10/2023 08:37

I have just 'finished' The Judge's List by John Grisham. Complete waste of time, the main character came across as not bothered, I should have taken the hint then! Ended up skipping whole chapters only to find the end was unsatisfying. I'm not going to bother with any more of his books now.

Amdone123 · 31/10/2023 09:10

I've just finished The Girl Who Came Back, forget the author. Was ok. Set in Anglesey. Ending was a tad unrealistic which spoilt it for me.

No idea what to read next, but so many to choose from.
