I just finished Such a fun age, by Kiley Reid. I’d say it was pretty good. It was readable and I got into it, I was curious. I liked how it touched on race relations in a different way. I disliked all the characters though, but I guess that makes them more realistic. Would pass it on but probably not read again.

Who’s next?

I’m currently reading Horse by Geraldine Brooks and liking it a lot.

It also touches on racial issues as it’s a book set in several different eras, slavery (1850s) pre civil rights (1950s) and present day.

I’ve read a lot of dreck this year!

I'm nearly finished Fall Of Giants by Ken Follett. I love his books and this trilogy is looking as promising as his other works. It's set around WW1, Russian Revolution, women's suffrage, and spans lots of characters. Interesting to see the war from different perspectives too. Loved it.

Just finished The Leviathan by Rosie Andrews. It was ok, but fanciful.

purpleme12 · 10/09/2023 22:27

The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier.
It was good/ok. Really interesting subject matter

Tokyo Express by Seicho Matsumoto. A quick read but enjoyable murder mystery.

Godofwar · 11/09/2023 08:43

Demon copperhead. It was fantastic but very bleak. I had to take a small break in the middle as I was on edge just waiting for everything to go wrong again for him.

Enigma - Robert Harris

Really enjoyed. I think it sets the scene well and depicts the historical era well also. The story keeps you captivated throughout. If I have to say a negative, I got a bit confused with some of the technical stuff. Ie. Some of the code breaking, and felt it went on a bit long in places.

Agatha Christie's 'The Murder at the Vicarage'. And the one before that was 'Murder on the Orient Express'. They were the first Christie books I've ever read and I really enjoyed them! I don’t normally like crime books (which is why I didn't try them before). I hadn't expected them to be funny as well as intriguing plot-wise!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 11/09/2023 21:16

Lucy by the Sea - Elizabeth Strout. I love her books. Nothing much happens really but I love the flawed characters and I like that there's not always a happy ending

Isthiscorrect · 11/09/2023 21:26

Currently midway through reading The most fun we ever had by Claire Lombard. Not gonna lie it seems to be taking forever. It's about a family, now and then. It's not a sweeping epic. Stuff happens but not much. Or when something big does happen not much is said about it.
Yep 4/10

Just finished The Hike by Lucy Clarke. It was a good thriller with some twists and turns although I didn't invest in the characters

threecupsofteaminimum · 11/09/2023 21:39

Sorry, cut and paste! Non fiction, I loved it, so interesting.

Lemonademoney · 11/09/2023 21:41

The Keeper of Stories and it’s a lovely lovely book

rookiemere · 11/09/2023 21:46

Just finished Aquarium for book group. Can't decide if it was truly awful or just very badly translated, maybe both.

TreeHuggerMum1 · 11/09/2023 21:47

Last night I finished The Vanishing of Margaret Small. It was such a lovely book.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 11/09/2023 21:48

Uncle Paul By Celia Fremlin.

Waterstone's thriller of the year and described by one person as chilling. Honestly ? I quite enjoyed it but didn't find it remotely chilling.

adultingforever · 11/09/2023 21:50

Just finished :The Dovekeepers" by Alice Hoffman. About women in 70 CE at the Masada, and written in a style that matches that time period. Loved it!

Tinytigertail · 11/09/2023 21:52

A Little Life, brilliant but so harrowing, I had to put it down and come back to it a few times.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 11/09/2023 21:53

I'm currently reading 4 books. But the last one I finished was "Not My Baby" by Anya Mora. It was alright. The storyline was really good actually. (Woman gives birth alone to a baby girl. When she wakes up her DH is home, and the baby is a boy.)
But the writing was sloppy. And I almost stopped reading when I read the line "your baby was assigned male at birth". Ffs.

But for a quick read it was alright.

Last night I finished The Vanishing of Margaret Small. It was such a lovely book.

Really enjoyed this to, though so sad and imagine so many were locked up like this.

Stories From Rwanda
By PHILIP GOUREVITCH

Mind blowing!

I really struggle to read fiction these days. Not sure why. I used to be able to get totally lost in a story.

Springduckling · 13/09/2023 13:48

The Twist of a Knife by Anthony Horowitz. Very enjoyable, a bit daft plotwise but still good.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 13/09/2023 13:56

I'm having a Barbara Pym binge -are there any other fans out there?
I just got her biography, which is all extracts from her letters and diaries, and I'm loving it.

CatOnAHotShedRoof · 13/09/2023 18:36

Zero Days by Ruth Ware. I enjoyed it, but much preferred The It Girl. This one's very different but, despite that, I figured out who the culprit was pretty early on.

Currently reading The Duchess by Wendy Holden, which is a novel about the Duchess of Windsor (Wallis Simpson) It's beautifully written, and shows her in a wholly different light. I'm loving it. Have also recently read The Governess (about Marion Crawford, Governess to the Queen and Princess Margaret) and have The Princess (about Princess Diana) lined up to read shortly.
