Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Süskind. Have about 30 pages left. It's been alright, have been able to get through it easily and it's novel for a novel 😛can't say I think it was worthy of all that hype years ago. I suspect the hype stemmed from the marketing campaign for the film adaptation rather than for the quality of the novel.

What is everyone else, probably, going to finish this week?

I just thought the ending to the plot and as very 'Meh' , there was quite some build up and I feel it fell very flat.

Just not my cup of tea.

I felt like that about one of my recent books. At Freddie's by...Penelope(?) Fitzgerald. Was just very flat. Read it, went "okay" and used it to start a charity shop pile in the house.

The Grey Bastards by Jonathan French. Really not my sort of thing but my mother will not stop nagging me to read it so I am.

Just started today, I mean it’s entertaining enough just not my usual thing. But having a fantasy world equivalent of a biker gang ride actual hogs is very funny.

I was wrong, I’m only halfway through but I haven’t had much time. Im surprised at how into it I’ve gotten considering it’s not my usual thing! It’s not as masculine as I was expecting from the description.

Hoping to finish Motherthing by Ainslie Hogarth today. I had a small book delivery yesterday so I'm keen to start something new (like I didn't already have books waiting to be read).

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 11/09/2023 10:36

Swan Song by Kelleigh Jephcott-Something. I love that it's about real people (Truman Capote, Lee Radziwill etc) but I'm not keen on the writing style which I find difficult to follow (in relation to the chronology of the story).

I recently read Evelyn Hugo and it was definitely an easy read but so much of it annoyed me.

I want to finish The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee this week. Trying to clear old purchases from my kindle.

Verite1 · 11/09/2023 14:46

I have just finished Love Marriage by Monica Ali. It was really good I thought - had me gripped

Struwwelpeter by H. Hoffmann and I can absolutely see why it is a children's classic. Reminiscent of the stories I read as a child. Extremely short but, of course, aimed at young children. I really rather enjoyed it!

The other book I'm just finishing is The 39 Steps by J. Buchan. An easy, fun enough read. It was aimed at adults but really I could picture myself in a corner of the library reading it as a kid. A bit of a penny thriller perhaps? Maybe a small step above ;-)

Oh have you read Brick Lane? I read that as a teen and remember really enjoying it.

The book of form and emptiness by Ruth Ozeki. I’m really enjoying it but it is not a quick read. I love how deeply she thinks about things though

I'm literally just about to start this!
I've just finished The Serial Killers Daughter. An enjoyable read but not one of the best psychological thrillers I've read. Before that I read The Push by Ashley Audrain, highly recommend.

Just finished The Humans by Matt Haig... was very good .

Lavender14 · 14/09/2023 22:32

The first Thursday murder club book

Chocolatefrenzy · 26/09/2023 22:21

'None of this is true' by Lisa Jewel. Have not been able to put it down. Utterly gripping, want to know what happens at the end but at the same time don't want to finish it because its sooooo good!

QueeniePlumtree · 26/09/2023 22:40

Solito be Javier Zamora

Absolutely brilliant read.

A real-life American Dirt!!

uhtredofbattenberg · 07/10/2023 11:12

Just finished Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith.
Didn't have high expectations as its over 1000 pages long and I'd already watched the TV series, but thought it was brilliant.

Best of the Strike series so far for me.

whatausername · 07/10/2023 11:47

@uhtredofbattenberg it must be good if you managed over 1000 pages and still loved it!

I'm just finishing Candide, or The Optimist (what a daft title ;-) ) by Voltaire. Thinking of Graham Norton's The Swimmer next for a quick afternoon read.

I’m reading a collection of Short Stories by Korean writers that I hope to finish today. Also Educated by Tara Westover. Enjoying both.

Ah, yes, Candide is wonderful. Unbelievably bleak, yet weirdly not depressing. It’s strange how certain writers can present an utterly bleak view of existence, yet not depress you. Thomas Hardy, for example, has a dark view of existence, yet he doesn’t upset me. Joseph Conrad, Cormac McCarthy and Philip Larkin, on the other hand, really drag me down, in spite of the brilliant writing.

whatausername · 07/10/2023 16:17

@JaneyGee you are absolutely spot on! Highlights the bleakness but is not depressing. I finished 'Candide' mere minutes ago and I bloody loved it. Voltaire is really rather funny too, if you enjoy sarcasm and gallows humour.
