Books you'll finish this week

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Süskind. Have about 30 pages left. It's been alright, have been able to get through it easily and it's novel for a novel 😛can't say I think it was worthy of all that hype years ago. I suspect the hype stemmed from the marketing campaign for the film adaptation rather than for the quality of the novel.

What is everyone else, probably, going to finish this week?

Daniel Finklestein: HITLER, STALIN, MUM AND DAD

It's enthralling though I do get lost in who's who in the different family trees.

I've still a good way to go though so maybe I won't get it finished - depends on my level of MNing this week!

EarringsandLipstick · 05/09/2023 09:34

Sorry didn't mean to shout the title.

Hitler had a robust tone so I thought you were merely channeling his style of speech 😂

@whatausername

😂😂😂😂😂

Will definitely finish The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware this afternoon. Not sure what to read next.

NigelTheCrab · 05/09/2023 15:46

@EarringsandLipstick
Daniel Finkelstein did a podcast episode on History Hit about his book and his family a couple of weeks ago. It was a really interesting listen!

I’m hoping to finish Half of a Yellow Sun either this week or next. I’ve really enjoyed it.

MollsDolls · 05/09/2023 15:48

The Missing Ones by Patricia Gibney

Oh thank you, I will have a listen!

The Grey Bastards by Jonathan French. Really not my sort of thing but my mother will not stop nagging me to read it so I am.

Just started today, I mean it’s entertaining enough just not my usual thing. But having a fantasy world equivalent of a biker gang ride actual hogs is very funny.

BalloonsInWater · 05/09/2023 17:33

Meg mason's Say it Again in a Nice Voice, so funny and well written and easy reading on holiday.

I'm half way through yellow sun and have been for a year 😬

Could finish the second book in the Wool trilogy but the second is not so good as the first.

ArcticBells · 05/09/2023 17:42

The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo and looking forward to it - not sure why it gets such great reviews

BalloonsInWater · 05/09/2023 21:06

@ArcticBells ugh I hated it! So horribly written. For some reason I gave her another chance and read the tennis one; absolutely don't bother

HarrietSchulenberg · 05/09/2023 21:12

The Marmalade Diaries by Ben Aitken.

whatausername · 05/09/2023 21:22

Had some unexpected time to myself and have finished Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. It was okay, wasn't great. My problem of what to read next is eased by the fact that I've several other books on the go simultaneously and I have decided not to add any new ones into the mix. As tempting as that may be...

Same. But I fell for thinking the other novels were better and am now reading 'After I Do'. I wish I hadn't picked it up but will finish it this week as I hate not finishing a novel.

savemyears · 05/09/2023 21:41

I've just finished Before I Go To Sleep by SJ Watson. It was quite predictable but I enjoyed it. I'm trying to find where I can watch the film adaptation but doesn't seem to be streaming anywhere.

Riverlee · 05/09/2023 21:45

Enigma - Robbert Harris, really enjoying it.

Purpleavocado · 05/09/2023 21:53

Enigma is great, if you can, visit Bletchly Park after you read it.
I'll finish Lock Every Door by Riley Sager. So far I have no idea what is going on, it's very mysterious!

Riverlee · 05/09/2023 22:05

@Purpleavocado The stupid thing is, used to live within 30 minutes of Bletchley and never knew of importance! I see it was re-vamped in 2014, so maybe it gained greater recognition since then.

Purpleavocado · 05/09/2023 22:13

I probably haven't been since 2014 and I live about 30 minutes away now!

Sakura7 · 06/09/2023 20:27

Circe by Madeline Miller. About half way through now and really enjoying it, despite knowing next to nothing about Greek mythology.

QueeniePlumtree · 10/09/2023 17:38

I've just finished The Apple Never Falls by Lianne Moriarty. I was very disappointed 😞

I've just started The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.

Jackydaytona · 10/09/2023 17:50

Just finished the house of odyseus by Clare North

Just started fair Rosaline by natasha Solomons

whatausername · 10/09/2023 20:55

Have finished The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie. Started The 39 Steps by John Buchan but unsure how much reading time I'll have over the next couple of weeks.
