I'm looking for a new book! I love horror such as Stephen King; a lengthy and well-crafted thriller; or something post-apocalyptic (but I think I've read all the best ones!).
Books I loved:
Station Eleven
The Stand
Swan Song
The Passage Trilogy
World War Z
The Girl with All the Gifts
Maddadam Trilogy
Etc etc etc.
Horror -
Stephen King
Paul Tremblay

Please suggest some new stuff to me! Ideally, lengthy books...

MEAT by Joseph de Lacey is good

Thank you - but I have just researched a bit and it sounds horrific!! I can't read gore (certain parts of certain Stephen King are about my limit).

HP Lovecraft?
Lots of stuff, some of it longer stories.
Envy anyone getting to read it for the first time.

Three Hours - Rosemary Lupton - good thriller

Dystopian/apolcolyptic:
Margaret’s Ark
The Wall
On a Beach - Neville Shute
Brave New World

John Marr books - set in the near future - you may like them also, excellant books

Assume you’ve read The Road?

I’m partial to James Herbert but it is fairly easy reading, but that suits me! I tend to find Stephen King unnecessarily wordy.

JaneyGee · 03/07/2023 18:38

Try M. R. James. He’s never been bettered. I’d also recommend the Mark Gatiss documentary on YouTube. Superb.

My Swordhand is Singing by Marcus Sedgwick.

Just seen more replies!! Thank you!!
I'm going to try 'Three Hours'.

Yes, read 'The Road' and 'Brave New World'.

I read Build Your House Around My Body by Violet Kupersmith recently, a really original and complex horror set in Vietnam.

Spanielsarepainless · 05/07/2023 19:33

The Huntress by some female author called Quin or Quinn

M R James is the best, hands down. To have the pleasure of reading his stories for the first time again!

Bethany Clift, The Last Girl At The Party

Octavia E Butler- Parable of the Sower- great post-apocalyptic tale. It has a follow up- Parable of the Talents- though I haven’t read it yet.

This is a quality thread but is costing me money!

The Apparition Phase, by Will MacLean, is a belter. A supernatural novel set in 70’s Britain, it’s not gory, more sad, nostalgic and eerie, there are several scenes which spooked me out in my own home and had me peering round corners into dark rooms. One of my favourite books of the last ten years, I’ve bought it for every horror fan I know. Future classic.

Another modern classic is Our Share of Night, by Mariana Enriquez, it’s lengthy, 700+ pages, gothic tale about a father and son trying to escape a demonic order in Argentina at the time of the dictatorship. It’s had mixed reviews but been critically acclaimed, published by Granta, and reminds me a bit of Anne Rice (at her best) and Isabelle Allende. Unlike a lot of novels about satanism it’s not hoky, and despite the subject matter, I really bought in. Dragged a bit at points but it’s definitely immersive and cinematic.

I read his stories on my kobo (downloaded off Gutenberg probably) but I weirdly remembered it as if I’d read them on old creaky leather bound tomes. The power of atmosphere!

I rec The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Most modern horror I read is so disappointing:(

Windthebloodybobbinup · 05/07/2023 20:04

Michele paver- thin air is great

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/07/2023 20:05

I read The Last Passenger by Will Deans a couple of weeks back and wonder if that might fit your bill?

Oh gosh yes. And Dark Matter. Scared me silly

MadCatLady27 · 05/07/2023 20:17

Following with interest as I enjoy this genre and will need some books for honeymoon

Mark Evans books are good and some quite chilling

ZoeyBartlett · 05/07/2023 20:58

The Fireman by Joe Hill. He is Stephen Kings son and defo similarities.

BrimFullOfAsher · 05/07/2023 21:15

A couple by Richard Laymon are really good, but most of his stuff is a bit gratuitous and overly gory/violent/sexualised.

The Traveling Vampire Show was a good one though (can be bought combined with a series of short stories, of which a few were really good)

indecisivewoman81 · 06/07/2023 17:45

If you like Stephen king then you will LOVE books by CJ Tudor. I recommend The chalk man which is set in the 80s and is excellent and creepy

DutchCowgirl · 06/07/2023 18:53

Hex by Thomas OldeHeuvelt has very much Stephen King vibes. No gore but very scary.

And I really like Preston & Child, their series about fbi agent Pendergast is a sort of detective with bits of horror in it.
