Recommendation for a superb horror/thriller...

I'm looking for a new book! I love horror such as Stephen King; a lengthy and well-crafted thriller; or something post-apocalyptic (but I think I've read all the best ones!).
Books I loved:
Station Eleven
The Stand
Swan Song
The Passage Trilogy
World War Z
The Girl with All the Gifts
Maddadam Trilogy
Etc etc etc.
Horror -
Stephen King
Paul Tremblay

Please suggest some new stuff to me! Ideally, lengthy books...

@Backstreets yes, Dark Matter was the most frightening /horrifying book I've ever read! I've actually blocked it out and now can't remember it!

AnyFucker · 12/07/2023 21:48

Reading with interest

Naomis room. I love horror, huge horror film and book fan but this book had me awake all night.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Described as the most frightening horror story ever because the characters don't know they're in one

N/o gore

I've just started reading The Guest House by Robin Morgan-Bentley. It's a dark psychological thriller. I'm hooked after a just few pages.

I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes. Amazing book.

It's an oldie but Nick Stone, Mr Clarinet. It's been about 15 years since I read it but the details have stayed with me 😩 Such a good read!

I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes. Amazing book.

I loved this! I've been waiting for so long for the follow up but it doesn't seem it will ever be available!

Tidypidy · 13/07/2023 08:47

Don't think a second book will appear sadly.

Great thread, will be trying some of these. I absolutely loved The Apparition Phase, mentioned above. I check every so often to see if he's written another book, but nothing yet.

I also really liked Hex. I love that small town America type setting for horror. The author's next book - the name escapes me - was quite strange in that I had the rare feeling of reading something very original. I wasn't even sure if I liked it or not, but I was certainly engrossed.

Great thread
Thanks

@dartsofcupid bought Apparition Phase on the strength of your rec and I am absolutely loving this. Big fan of all the 70s eerie horror shows referenced so it feels like it was written just for me. It's also creeping me out so much I have to take breaks from it :)

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 13/07/2023 10:30

The Wool trilogy

ManAboutTown · 13/07/2023 22:37

I really enjoyed I am Pilgrim as well

Some of Neal Stephenson's stuff is worth a look - Seveneyes, Reamde and Anathem ( the last two aren't spelling mistakes)

DerekFaker · 14/07/2023 19:16

The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley. Has a spooky atmosphere, like a cold fog 😄

Booter21 · 03/08/2023 16:58

Have you tried any Val McDermid - the Tony Hill thrillers? You need quite a strong stomach for some of those!

Bruisername · 04/08/2023 10:38

Russell H Greenan (only on kindle unfortunately) has some terrors (although perhaps not his best work ‘It happened in Boston?’).

Brendabigbaps · 04/08/2023 10:42

Nos4r2 by Joe hill.
anything by Joe hill really!
stephen kings son, he’s very like SK, he writes modern stuff in the style of early SK.

Brendabigbaps · 04/08/2023 10:43

And Bentley Little, anything by Bentley but ones that really stick in my mind are The Store & The Mailman

whatabeautifulwedding · 04/08/2023 10:51

If you've not already read it (or seen the Netflix series), You by Caroline Kepnes is amazing as a psychological thriller.

Also following this thread as I used to devour Point Horror books as a young teen and looking for anything similar more suited to adults.

Purpleavocado · 04/08/2023 11:19

Someone already recommended The Last One at the Party - it's great. Have you read Klara and the Sun and Never Let Me Go? They aren't distopean but similar. I seem to remember Behind the Scenes at the Museum being ens of the world but it's a long time since I read it.

HallieRaspberry · 04/08/2023 13:15

I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman
I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid
Fantasticland by Mike Bockoven

I also really enjoyed Dark Matter and Relic like previous posters.

Bruisername · 04/08/2023 13:16

I who have never known men is excellent but a real thinking book!
