I just haven't taken to it so far (I'm about 100 pages in). Is it worth persevering?

yes i was wondering who had bought the film rights. i could see jodie foster as mrs ross!

Threadworm · 04/03/2008 11:33

Its one of those books (more and more common I think) that seem to have been written almost with a view to the film rather than the book itself. All very filmy, especially the final scenes.

catsmother · 04/03/2008 19:12

"Mrs Ross" ..... but we find out right at the end that actually her name is Lucy (if I remember correctly). Anyway, whatever he's been calling his dog. She says something like "you've said it often enough" after he asks her name.

expatinscotland · 04/03/2008 19:13

Yep, it's Lucy.

ska · 05/03/2008 10:03

oh i thought when she said 'you've said it enough' she was saying its MRS Ross as in ' back off i don't have the right to have a happy life i have to go back to the old tedium of life with MR Ross' - so she was giving him the bum's rush NOT that she is called Lucy

catsmother · 05/03/2008 17:24

Hmm, maybe Ska ......

Have to confess I was completely in the dark about the whole name thing but one or two of the group came up with the name/dog theory and it seemed plausible.

Troutpout · 05/03/2008 17:31

i liked it... I saw i recommended on mn and would never have chosen it myself. But yes i agree that it seems to have been written ready for film

expatinscotland · 05/03/2008 17:38

He specifically asked her first name and she responded, 'You've said it often enough.'

There was only one forename he called often, and that was his dog's. Lucie.

expatinscotland · 05/03/2008 17:39

The sled dog Lucie also showed immediate affinity with Mrs Ross and at times, seemed to be a reflection of her own self, well, in a couple of scenes.

yes it could well be, i often miss stuff like this, so keen am i for a happy ending...
