I just haven't taken to it so far (I'm about 100 pages in). Is it worth persevering?

I enjoyed it, it is very different-lovely descriptions of Canada.

talkingmongoose · 21/02/2008 16:00

Sorry, I had to give up on it.
erm, that's not what you wanted to hear, is it .

Iota · 21/02/2008 16:03

I really enjoyed it - but each to their own

expatinscotland · 21/02/2008 16:06

I loved it.

doggiesayswoof · 21/02/2008 16:06

Don't plod on!

There are too many good books out there that you will love, and life is too short

(Sorry, I haven't actually read it myself)

PanicPants · 21/02/2008 16:08

I loved it, but agree it was a slow starter. Keep going it's worth it

cheeryface · 21/02/2008 16:15

i gave up with it too

marmadukescarlet · 21/02/2008 16:29

I enjoyed it.

I think the gradual trickle of info regarding each person kept me interestd (I just knew he was gay) and the interplay between the mother and....well I don't want to spoil it

janeite · 21/02/2008 19:30

I finished it -

but I still didn't like it. I'd stop if I were you and read something else instead. Life is too short to be bored by mediocre literature when you could just re-read "Pride And Prejudice"!!!

expatinscotland · 21/02/2008 19:33

I'd rather poke out my eyeballs with a fork and eat them than re-read that tosh 'Pride and Prejudice' - or any of her stuff, for htat matter.

janeite · 21/02/2008 19:37

Expat
We'll just have to agree to disagree on that one.

andiemustlosehalfastonemore · 21/02/2008 19:38

I loved it but took a while to get going plod on I would say

threestars · 27/02/2008 21:39

I found it slow-going for quite a while, and almost gave up, especially with all the descriptions of snow and the cold, but it's CERTAINLY not mediocre, (the quality of the writing is superb) and really speeds up towards the end to the point where I really didn't want to put it down for an instant, which I hadn't expected at all when I first started reading it. CONTINUE!!

ArcticRoll · 27/02/2008 21:40

Deffo worth persevering with imo.

AdamAnt · 27/02/2008 21:46

I'd forgotten I'd posted about this

I've been studiously avoiding it for the last few days, but you've persuaded me to pick it up again. I hate giving up on a book...it preys on my mind for years

I am on page 162, it isn't the best book I have ever read, but it is okay, find the jumping from one character to another a bit annoying now, but it is still worth reading...

catsmother · 02/03/2008 22:27

I chose this for the book club I go to based on various (good) reviews. From 7 of us, 5 raved about it, but 2 of us (including me) thought it was just okay. I thought the descriptions of the environment were very evocative but really didn't warm to any of the characters.

ska · 03/03/2008 21:26

i loved it but agree taht if you dont then give up and try something else instead

Threadworm · 03/03/2008 21:32

No. Don't plod on. It would be easier and more rewarding to keep on walking through a blizzard.

dewmeadow · 03/03/2008 21:35

I havr read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell at least 3 times!!

Threadworm · 03/03/2008 21:36

The main female character I forget her name always made me think of mumsnet. I bet if there had been a mumsnet in 19-century Canada she would have been a member.

expatinscotland · 03/03/2008 21:37

She was always referred to as 'Mrs Ross'.

I like her! She was very much an Edinburgh woman - like the author!

ska · 03/03/2008 21:38

i loved her and still think about her (i must get a life)

aefondkiss · 03/03/2008 21:39

I finished it and enjoyed the 2nd half of the book much more than I expected... dh is sitting reading it now.

we have decided it will make a great film.

christie1 · 03/03/2008 23:00

I really liked it. Once they start out through the snow and end up at the camp it picks up. Other characters start to intersect on the trail so you can find more characters that interest you. I would keep on with it.
