hmmmmm I hate recommending books but am reading 'A Gathering Light' at the moment which is quite good (have not finished it yet though grr).

Also just read Philip Roth's Everyman which I didn't think I'd enjoy but did.

I haven't started the big Mitford letters book (that Enid linked to) but it does look like a wonderful book. If she likes history, Austerity Britain is also fab. I always think proper big books are lovely as presents.

ArcticRoll · 20/02/2008 21:37

Margaret Forster-Diary of an Ordinary Woman?

filthymindedvixen · 20/02/2008 21:38

oh he did buy me a fab one about an irish prossie's daughter who ends up as ladies maid to a very bizarre mistress who makes her do really odd tasks for her book about servants. Tis funny, and odd and mysterious and sad. But helpfully, I can remember neither the autheor or title (I loved it so much I sent it to my mother)

Just finished 'When we were bad' Charlotte Mendellson v good also liked that 'Can any mother help me' book about 1930s correspondence magazine version of Mumsnet only if mother though obviously-I would have found it dull as anything a few years ago.

This is very good, especially if she is literary (lots of references to historical nobels);
