Was also going to say Atwood although she might have some

Good historical novels, IMO:

The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber (very saucy but very good)
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters
An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears (Name of the Rose-type murder mystery)

Favourite modern fiction reads in recent months have been:

Beyond Black - Hilary Mantel
Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian - Marina Lewycka, but I don't think you liked that cod
Yiddish Policeman's Union - Michael Chabon

You could go off-piste and get her something vintage modern from Abebooks, like William Golding's The Spire - astounding book. And local interest too

ara · 20/02/2008 21:18

The Book of Dave (Will Self) - it's fandabbydozy, about a mad taxi driver whose diary is dug up years in the future and is revered as some sort of bible. or Geek Love (Catherine Dunn), about a family who have a travelling freak show. They're both quite strange books but my absolute faves.

TheHonEnid · 20/02/2008 21:18

god I read Geek Love years ago and have never met anyone else who has read it

I loved it but would never buy it for anyone - too leftfield

TheHonEnid · 20/02/2008 21:20

get her Greek Myths by Robert Graves

I would literally revere anyone who bought me that

OP posts:

ah you are the first person i have ever met (or not met, rather) who has read it!

it's like a whole new world.....! in a good way of course. if you enjoyed that you must read The Book of Dave.

TheHonEnid · 20/02/2008 21:23

oooh this also successful xmas gift - a little bit sexy, very well written

ara · 20/02/2008 21:24

cod - they are odd (now everyone's going to think i'm a psycho) but trust me they're good

chonky · 20/02/2008 21:24

Empress Orchid by Anchee Min
Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

I haven't read it, but if she likes historical fiction maybe Kate Mosse's latest (think it's Sepulchre?)?
