The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber (very saucy but very good)
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters
An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears (Name of the Rose-type murder mystery)

Favourite modern fiction reads in recent months have been:

Beyond Black - Hilary Mantel
Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian - Marina Lewycka, but I don't think you liked that cod
Yiddish Policeman's Union - Michael Chabon

You could go off-piste and get her something vintage modern from Abebooks, like William Golding's The Spire - astounding book. And local interest too

The Book of Dave (Will Self) - it's fandabbydozy, about a mad taxi driver whose diary is dug up years in the future and is revered as some sort of bible. or Geek Love (Catherine Dunn), about a family who have a travelling freak show. They're both quite strange books but my absolute faves.
