I'm reading Blood & Beauty by Sarah Dunant as recommended by another MNer.

What are you reading and is it any good? Wink

Just starting Shy by Max Porter

Someone on MN said Mary Stewart was their favourite comfort read author. I’d never even heard of her, but looked her up and am just starting Madam, Will You Talk? Enjoying so far.

Mary Stewart is brilliant, I don't think she was capable of writing a duff book or an awkward sentence and her plotting is amazing. Try the Merlin trilogy, but they are all first class.

I’m afraid that I wasn’t that keen on it. She writes beautifully. The descriptions of the South of France made me desperate to go on holiday, but the plot was very thin with ridiculous coincidences. I might try a later one.

'The Lacuna' by Barbara Kingsolver.

I loved the Poisonwood Bible but finding this one slightly hard work. I'm determined to persevere though as I feel like it will be worthwhile.

Trying to resist American Dirt, which arrived at the weekend and is giving me the side eye from the bookshelf. I read the first few pages and love it already.

How have you found it? I saw him performing a monologue from it with a musician recently, and was left unconvinced, despite liking Lanny.

honeyfox · 24/05/2023 23:29

Just finished All Adults Here by Emma Straub. Reminded me a bit of Elizabeth Strout's books, enjoyed it.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 24/05/2023 23:41

The Change by Kirsten Miller. About to finish it and I’m gutted.

marmiteloversunite · 25/05/2023 00:20

Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney. Read half of it in one sitting this afternoon. Looking forward to the rest.

My son loved it but I'm not convinced either so far... very unusual style

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. I’m finding it unbelievably long-winded and boring, but I just want to finish and get it to the charity shop now. I’ve read two other novels since I started!

I felt that way too

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 27/05/2023 07:48

Well I'm still reading Blood & Beauty. I can't seem to read more than about 10 pages recently with falling asleep!

Anything by JK Rowling has that effect on me.

I had to start it twice but kept going and about halfway in it became really gripping and I ended up really enjoying it.

Started reading Salt Lake by William Shaw am enjoying it so far 🤗

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 27/05/2023 19:05

I’m bloody loving Spectacles - Sue Perkins’ memoir narrated by herself on Audible.

Maryandherlamb · 27/05/2023 19:10

The promise by Damon Galgut. Took a bit of getting into, but I'm not sure if that was because I happened to start it on a bad run of shifts so I was always tired when I picked it up. I'm half way through and finally starting to look forward to opening it up at bed time.

DelurkingAJ · 27/05/2023 19:11

Read Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth last night. I am adoring them although am happy to admit they’re a long way from making me think, just rip roaring reads. (I bought the first for DS1 then nicked it from his bookshelf).

Amboseli · 27/05/2023 19:12

The Most Important Thing by Howard Marks

Snap. I started reading it about eighteen months ago but gave up. I’ve really got into it this time around. Narration in the present tense is usually a real pet hate of mine, but it works well here.

'Shelley, the pursuit.' I am so sorry for poor Fanny Imlay, Mary Wollstonecroft's other daughter. Also poor Harriet, his first wife. And poor Mary Shelley. PBS was so generous, idealistic and talented, but utterly heartless at the same time. It's a fascinating read. I must have another go at The Little Stranger, didn't get on with it the first time I tried to read it, but it sounds like it's worth persisting.

AllotmentTime · 27/05/2023 23:45

I love Sarah Waters too but some of her books are SUCH a slow burn 😆 Night Watch is the best IMO.

I’ve just finished The Maid by Nina Prose. There’s more than one maid mentioned on this thread so best to be clear! It’s in the style of Eleanor Oliphaunt (though not quite as perfect), anyone who liked Eleanor should try it.

I have a million new books and samples to try but too stressed to look at something new so fell back on Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (who wrote the Martian). I love it and it’s easy, but it’ll only take me a weekend as I know it so well, and then I’ll have to make a decision again! Thinking about Wanderers by Chuck Wendig.

I read this a while ago. It’s heartbreaking.
She’s a good writer imo.

Shrines of gaiety by Kate Atkinson, has started well, but half way through now and it's lagging a bit, I'm still waiting to find out what is actually happening
