Embarrassed how excited I am. So in love with the flawed Nelson too. But maybe my favourite part is the landscape.

The stories are getting a bit repetitive, hopefully Michelle will have had the balls to dump Nelson.

Georgyporky · 06/02/2023 17:28

I've just reserved it at the library consortium, there's 70 copies available & 440 in the queue ahead of me !

Is that paper or ebook? Thinking of joining the queue, as my local library service has just joined the consortium, and my local branch was due to reopen today.

Georgyporky · 07/02/2023 10:07

@elkiedee It's paper for now.

It's usually quite a while after publication before e-book versions are available - some are never converted.
Libby was a life-saver during lockdown !

elkiedee · 07/02/2023 16:24

Last year I was astonished to get a library ebook on publication day (House of Fortune by Jessie Burton) but I agree, the ebook stock etc is still much more limited plus there's often one copy across the system, and there are usually more paper copies in circulation.

The Last Remains has now made its way to actual stock rather than "on order" and is on its way to the library branch where I've asked to collect it, so I'm hoping that I'll get an email soon saying it's waiting for me. At the moment there are only two of us in the queue but there's also only one copy, so once it comes through and I collect it, I'll need to prioritise (shouldn't be a major problem!)

Mumsnut · 07/02/2023 16:51

<<wonders if it would be quicker to buy one between us and post it around->>

Toddlerteaplease · 07/02/2023 20:53

I've got it on Audible..

Motorcyclemptiness · 08/02/2023 08:38

Me too. Of the two narrators, this one is my preferred one, too.

scarecrow22 · 15/02/2023 09:27

Who's finished it? NO SPOILERS PLEASE! Am 63% through my Kindle tells me. Had a persistent dread that a major character is going to die. Can't see how Nelson and Ruth can stay together without it being twee. Best option would be him moving to her "godforsaken" house, but surely he'd drive her mad within 96h.

OP posts:
scarecrow22 · 15/02/2023 09:28

Or he could buy them a bigger house by the sea. And then maybe she'd say no.... might have to turn in TV for a few hours later and finish it.

Hi OP - I read it in one day !!! No spoilers but don’t worry - all will work out in some strange fashion.

scarecrow22 · 16/02/2023 10:40

Finished. Bereft. Wheel of fortune indeed. Sad and happy. What will I look forward to now??

Violinist64 · 16/02/2023 12:28

I finished it within two days after I bought it. I loved it. It tied up all the loose ends. What a shame the series is over, though.

SaltMarsh · 16/02/2023 16:59

Read it again almost straight away - that's what I'm doing anyway.

Then go back and read the whole series again from the start.

She definitely will shag Nelson. That woman can count her shags for the last 11 years on two hands. That is sliiiiim pickings. At least Nelson is a definite score.

Not quite, she did move to Cambridge with Frank. Though why she gave up a teaching post at Cambridge, is anyone's guess. She should have stayed at that university

Don't you have children to look after??!! Or did you ace the parenting thing and teach them a lot more self sufficiency than my two who don't ave any At All ? Or maybe they are just older.....

I've just finished it.
Particularly touched by the mention of "Jill's Gymkhana". I adored those books as a horsey child.

I'm still baffled how she got a post at Cambridge, there is never any mention of publications, funding, research etc.

elkiedee · 17/02/2023 11:35

I picked up a copy from the library on Wednesday - I was (surprisingly!) first in a queue of two. I expect it to be quite a quick read once I get started.

My kids are 14 and nearly 16 and the older one went out to a party last night and messaged saying he was sleeping over. He's just messaged saying he's still there.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/02/2023 15:47

I hope Michelle grows a pair and chucks Nelson out. I know she cheated as well. But his cheating has gone on for 10 years!

saltedcaramelhotchoc · 17/02/2023 21:58

No spoilers but - do readers want Ruth and Nelson to be living together forever? Wouldn't Nelson do Ruth's head in long term? What would a happy ending for Ruth entail?
Also - this may be because of my job and innate prejudices but I find the idea of Ruth as a Dean deeply depressing.
Love the series though.

Howtohideasausage · 17/02/2023 22:32

I got the first book a few weeks ago on the back of this thread. I’m now on book 7!

Toddlerteaplease · 17/02/2023 22:48

I can't imagine that they would be able to tolerate living together for very long. Ruth likes her Soave and her tiny cottage to much and they don't seem to have anything in common.

I am thrilled you were inspired. Some plots are a bit (okay v ) far fetched, but it's still often fascinating and fun. I envy you!

@Toddlerteaplease @saltedcaramelhotchoc

Have you read last one? I read your comments diff depending on that. If not, things make more sense. Especially given the loudspeaker and living arrangements. (Don't think their are spoilers there.)
