A shiny new thread for 2023. There didn't appear to be one do hope it's ok that I have created it this year.

All welcome and note 26 is just a number. Everyone can set their own target and you are welcome here even if you only read 3 books a year.

I personally count the larger novel style books I read to my children and audio books I listen to. Others don't and there are no rules.

I look forward to all your suggestions again this year.

I love the Jackson Brodie books. Hoping KA will write some more!

Nordicmom · 06/05/2023 16:42

I gave up on
11.Project Hail Mary after 100 pages, I got bored and it was over 400 pages long so it’ll going to charity shop .
I have another book ,a present ,in my drawer I think I’ll just leaf through since it’s a self help one and I don’t really care for them after reading plenty in the past . Then I’ve read all of my books except on kindle so I’ll see what next. I’m not sentimental about books so I don’t keep this kind of books generally .

21 Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/05/2023 22:48

53 The Host. Written by Stephanie Meyer, and much better than the Twilight books. They very much remind me of I Shall Fear No Evil, a classic Robert Heinlein, but without all the 60s hippy vibes. :)

Nordicmom · 08/05/2023 03:47

I ended up not reading the present book just leafing through it a bit before donating so not counting it . Instead I finished another one on my kindle .
12.Knee deep in life -Laura Belbin I found that it was another book that’s not really relevant to me at my life stage any more now that my kids are older and kind of just more of the same I’ve read many times before about motherhood .
Not sure what I’ll read next possibly will finish more books on my kindle .

  1. The Dutch House - Ann Patchett.
GalileoHumpkins · 08/05/2023 13:02

22 Never Lie by Freida McFadden.

EspeciallyDetermined · 08/05/2023 22:45

19: How to kill Men and get away with It - Katy Brent. - lightweight, ludicrous plotlines but somehow gripping. Trigger warning for violent death though.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 09/05/2023 07:45

@Pourmeanotherwine if you loved Song of Achilles I can recommend Circe.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 09/05/2023 07:50

4 Digging to America by Ann Tyler

5 The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

6 The Woman in the White Kimono whilst the story was interesting, I couldn't really warm to any of the characters.

3 books last month:
8 - The Bullet that Missed, Richard Osman - I like this series, it's fun and escapist. I got the first one for my dad for his birthday.
9 - Anger Management for Parents, Vivian Foster. A bit trite and tends to assume you are angry at things going on outside your family and taking it out on your kids (mine is the opposite with a child with SEN and extreme aggression).
10 - How not to murder your ADHD kid, Sarah Templeton. Reasonably helpful, also a very quick read!

Nordicmom · 10/05/2023 13:56

Since I’ve finished my books to read I have started on one I’ve bought for DS
13.If it bleeds -Stephen King

drspouse · 10/05/2023 14:17

I’ve finished my books to read
Sorry, does not compute. You have no books in the house or on Kindle that you haven't read? Are you even a bookworm??

Nordicmom · 10/05/2023 17:29

Hah ok , I should have put it in another way . I have had a drawer of books to read in my bedroom for years I’ve now read all , I do have some on my kindle left I’m not so enthusiastic about so might just delete them . There’s a few of DH on kindle in the library I could read too . In our downstairs bookcase there are only a few books to do with me we’ve been given as gifts but otherwise none of my books anymore just kids and DH ones that might have some as does DS I can read like the Stephen King I now started . I have actually read all MY physical books and decluttered the ones no one else here wants to read since I will not read them again . I’m not at all attached to physical books although I like to read them and not just on kindle . I haven’t been buying lots of new ones since I was on a mission of reading the ones I already had for the last few years .

Nordicmom · 10/05/2023 17:31

In general we’ve been doing a clear out in our house for years and that’s included books .
my parents have hundreds if not more I grew up surrounded by them I just don’t want them everywhere after I’ve read them although we probably do still have them in every room of our house except bathrooms

drspouse · 10/05/2023 20:11

Well done you!

Iamblossom · 11/05/2023 16:25

Book 11 = Whispers Underground by Ben Aaronovitch
I am really enjoying this series although this story seemed a bit far fetched even for magical policing 😅

I really enjoyed The Host. Unfortunately the film was shite.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 11/05/2023 17:15

Oh it really was!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 11/05/2023 17:16

54 Animal, Vegetable, Criminal.
Tales of animals up to no good and how it is tackled.

Tinkhasflown · 14/05/2023 10:13

I haven't updated for a while....
Book 11 Duffy and Son, Damien Owens (audio). I loved this, found parts of it hilarious.
Book 12 A Spark of Light, Jodi Piccoult. This was a great read about a hostage situation in a women's health clinic.
Book 13 Mad Honey, Jodi Piccoult I enjoyed this read, even though I didn't agree with the gender ideology that is outlined as fact within. The characters were relatable and I loved the bee facts. It was overall a very woke book though.
Book 14 We Need to Talk About Kevin, Lionel Shriver. This took me an she to finish. It was a good book, but I think could have been cut down on size quite a bit. It took me a while to get into the style too which is written as a series of letters.
Book 15 Someone Else's Shoes, Jojo Moyes Enjoyable light read.
Book 16 Foster, Claire Keegan A short story and quite sad really.
Book 17 The Curfew, T M Logan About a missing girl - I was kept intrigued, but some parts were a bit unbelievable.
Book 18 The Trick to Time, Kit de Waal
Book 19 Demon Dentist Read to my children.
Book 20 Milkman, Anna Burns (audio). This was my second attempt and I got a recommendation to try the audio book. It was all maybe a bit close to home for me as this is where I grew up. It as just ok.

20: When Will There Be Good News (Jackson Brodie 3) by Kate Atkinson. Thoroughly enjoying listening to all these, I had read three of the first 4 years ago but not in the right order and missing one, so doing it properly this time.

21: Atomic Habits by James Clear. Very thought provoking.

GalileoHumpkins · 14/05/2023 12:11

23 Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield.

thefinaltwist · 14/05/2023 16:46

Book 12 The Last Remains by Elly Griffiths

Wildernesstips · 14/05/2023 18:47

11 - The Colony by Audrey Magee
One of those books that I didn’t really enjoy reading at the time but I have thought about it quite a bit since finishing it.

I was staying on an island of the same size when I started it. Does anyone else do that - read something that ties in with where you are?
