A shiny new thread for 2023. There didn't appear to be one do hope it's ok that I have created it this year.

All welcome and note 26 is just a number. Everyone can set their own target and you are welcome here even if you only read 3 books a year.

I personally count the larger novel style books I read to my children and audio books I listen to. Others don't and there are no rules.

I look forward to all your suggestions again this year.

Finished book 5 : The bird in the bamboo cage by Heather Webb. Good but sad.
I fancy reading something funny next, so book 6 is the second Sunday murder club one.

Iamblossom · 20/02/2023 21:33

Book 5 - The Last Thing to Burn by Will Dean.

Omigod amazing, I read it in 2 sittings, couldn't put it down, on absolute tenterhooks all the way. Brilliant.

Iamblossom · 20/02/2023 21:41

Has anyone on here read A Little Life?

Has anyone on here read A Little Life?

Yes I thought it was beautifully written misery porn. Not my cup of tea at all.

I did too. One of those I wish I'd never read but would again if that makes any sense.

Can't believe they are making a play out of it, with James Norton as Jude!

I only ask as my Book number 5 was a bit like it but not as horrific.

BaconAndAvocado · 20/02/2023 22:04

I read and loved A Little Life a few years ago. It has stayed with me.

15 - The Creeping Shadow.

Changed my mind! I have decided to re-read a favourite series during half term.

So 15 is instead First Grave on the Right, by Darynda Jones.

Heartily recommended if, like me, you favour first person, female lead fantasy books.

And there are 10 in the series so that should keep me busy! It's half term so I can get through nearly a book a day around pottering and housework.

Wildernesstips · 21/02/2023 07:27

I read A Little Life and actually “enjoyed” it, but it was too long.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 21/02/2023 12:25
  1. Second Grave on the Left
DrMadelineMaxwell · 21/02/2023 22:45
  1. Third Grave Dead Ahead.

Gotta love a series that makes it easy to remember which book comes next.
And there are 13 not 10 as I thought so that will keep me busy for sure!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 22/02/2023 14:31

18 Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/02/2023 21:56

19 Fifth Grave Past the Light.

EspeciallyDetermined · 23/02/2023 22:27

7: Gone Fishing by Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse (audio). An enjoyable chat between the two comedians about their shared love of fishing.

BaconAndAvocado · 24/02/2023 19:09

4 The Night Ship by Jess Kidd
A double timeline between 1989 and 1639. Bases around the stories of two children - one a boy from a distressing background trying to start again with his Grandad on an island off the West Coast of Australia and one a girl on a ship sailing from Holland to Indonesia.
It’s based on the true story of the ship, The Batavia. It’s gut wrenching in places but equally has funny and touching moments. I really enjoyed it and think about it often.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 25/02/2023 10:15

20 Sixth Grave on the Edge.

Back to work next week so much less time to sit and read in between my other pottering jobs.

EasterIssland · 26/02/2023 10:16

Going to do monthly recaps so it’s easier :)

  1. Lessons in chemistry. I likes it. 5/5
  2. Really good, actually. 5/5 as well.
  3. Cuando todo era divertido. This one is in Spanish. Easy read. Read it in a day. 3/5
  4. Book lovers. 5/5. I want to cry with this book

starting to think what to read in March. Not sure whether go for a Spanish book I’ve been recommended , or the nightgale which many of you have recommended

Just went to check the kindle version from the nightingale and seems like I read it in 2016! I knew the plot sounded familiar

thefinaltwist · 26/02/2023 20:56

I've done similar where I've been standing looking for books in the shop and it sounds familiar 🤔 so I've checked my kindle list and its been there. I had actually preordered it and forgotten all about it

Wildernesstips · 27/02/2023 07:15

5. The Silent Wife by A S A Harrison
Enjoyed this even though not my usual sort of read. About a partnership breakup and revenge. I think it comes from an interesting angle though.

Now started a non-fiction book, Deep Sea and Foreign Going about shipping containers.

Nordicmom · 27/02/2023 08:13

Gosh some of you are storming ahead with your reading ! I’ve fallen off the thread and a bit behind with mine . I’ll keep to the 26 a year as a goal, I’m afraid I enjoy a good tv series etc far too much to do more . I am in the middle of two atm ,to my shame
3.Certain recent royal biography on my kindle 😁 although I have to say it’s slow going I’m somewhat bored and will probably not finish it
4.Queen K- Sarah Thomas I spotted in the newspaper the other day . Seems like an easy read so far I’m quite enjoying it .
Next might continue the Fairytale by Stephen King I started last year

EspeciallyDetermined · 27/02/2023 09:13

8: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt - a story of two people whose lives intersect in an unexpected way with a little help from an octopus in an aquarium. Sounds utterly bonkers but I loved it.

Orangebadger · 27/02/2023 10:38

*3) The man who died twice. Richard Osman.
*
A marmite book I know but I enjoyed it. Didn't love it. But an easy, funny read.

*4) The Funny thing about Norman Foreman. Julietta Henderson.
*
No idea what to expect with this, recommended and lent to me by a friend.

Deadringer · 27/02/2023 23:28

No. 13 Mad Honey. Enjoying it so far.

Yawningalldaylong · 28/02/2023 07:53
