Recommend some Stephen King?

I don't like 'extreme' horror that keeps me awake at night but I love Stephen Kings style of writing.
I've read Sleeping Beauties, the green mile, fairytale, Misery and the outsider and loved them all. 'It' was a bit too much for me, although I did enjoy it I suppose!.
I listen to them on audible on dark night time walks so anything too creepy is a no-no...
Can anyone recommend some similar to those I enjoyed?

Collection of short stories was called Nightmares and Dreamscapes. It is quite frightening, definitely more horror. I read it years ago and some of the stories are vividly stuck in my head.

I couldn't really get into 22.11.63 but think I'll give it another try. I'm currently listening to Mr Mercedes on Audible and really liking it. Not horror-just a good old fashioned police thriller.
The Stand is one of my favourite books of all time too.

hairycabbage · 02/03/2023 19:43

Since I first posted I read 22.11.63 and absolutely loved it. I even cried at the end! Couldn't get into Mr Mercedes but now halfway through Salems Lot- I'm not loving it but enjoying it

You’ve had loads of good Stephen king recommendations. If you want to branch out Dean Koontz is similar. Lightning is my favourite, but he’s written loads eg Odd Thomas series, The Door to December, Icebound.

hidethexylophone · 02/03/2023 20:03

Try Watchers by Dean Koontz - I'm a massive Stephen king fan but watchers is a brilliant read.
The dead zone is excellent too, not really a horror but great concept.

wobblyweasel · 02/03/2023 20:07

The Green Mile (I cried reading it)
Needful Things
Rose Red

Enjoyed all these books 😊

Amazing, thank you!
Has anyone read The Institute?

Yes, really enjoyed it!

Salem's Lot is good. My favourite is The Shining, although it's scary!

The outsider is good but gruesome.

His non-fiction 'on writing' is one of the best I've ever read.

SlipperClub · 02/03/2023 20:07

I really liked Dr Sleep, his more recent one.

HollyGolightly4 · 02/03/2023 20:08

Me too!

SlipperClub · 02/03/2023 20:09

Dean Koontz books are always in charity shops - I bought 4 recently for £1.00!

I'm going through his books now in the order they were written.

The Stand is my absolute favourite.
Deadzone - great.
Needful Things - great
The shining - my least favourite
Carrie - great
Firestarter - half way through and really enjoying it
Cujo - reading this next but remember I loved it as a teenager

I agree with cujo, also bag of bones and insomnia, also try the Bachmann books (his alias) running man is good and not like the film, although I love that too. The long walk is great and I think is one of the first things he ever wrote. There's always the stand too, not too spooky.

I was going to recommend The Bachman Books too, four great novellas in one book.

lanawinters · 07/03/2023 22:27

Long time Stephen King fan... loved The Stand, The Shining, Tommyknockers, Salems Lot.
Just read his latest Fairy Tale and absolutely adored it. Really hit the spot. 👏🏼

neveradullmoment99 · 07/03/2023 22:33

Misery

overthinking23 · 07/03/2023 22:34

Needful things is great, also I loved under the dome. The institute is very good. I've read 30 SK books and those are my favourite that aren't too 'horror'

Another vote for Thinner

Thinner! Love Steven King!

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 07/03/2023 22:40

The Jaunt has haunted me since I read Skeleton Crew in 1993

Beaglesonlyplease · 07/03/2023 22:44

I’m on Book 4 of The Dark Tower. Love it but the Stand is still my favourite of his.

PepeLePew · 08/03/2023 09:28

I love The Stand, and everyone I've ever encouraged to read it has loved it too. It's such good storytelling, though the ending is not the best. Though by King's standards it's a fantastic ending - I still can't forgive him for Under the Dome which was brilliant until the last five pages. I also love the Dark Tower books, Misery and a lot of the earlier novellas and shorter books. I'm probably the only person who ever includes The Eyes of the Dragon on a list of favourites, but it's a real comfort read for me. His more recent stuff is a bit more variable, but I thought The Institute was very good indeed.

Jewelanemone · 08/03/2023 09:32

Long-term King fan here - my favourites tend to be his older books:
Misery
Christine
Cujo
The Long Walk (as Richard Bachman)
Needful Things

MegBusset · 08/03/2023 09:48

I don’t think The Talisman has been mentioned yet. It’s one of my very favourite books of all time.

beguilingeyes · 08/03/2023 09:52

The early stuff. Carrie, Salem's Lot, The Dead Zone (fantastic movie also), Firestarter, The Stand.
