Recommend some Stephen King?

I don't like 'extreme' horror that keeps me awake at night but I love Stephen Kings style of writing.
I've read Sleeping Beauties, the green mile, fairytale, Misery and the outsider and loved them all. 'It' was a bit too much for me, although I did enjoy it I suppose!.
I listen to them on audible on dark night time walks so anything too creepy is a no-no...
Can anyone recommend some similar to those I enjoyed?

The Stand is also my all time favourite of all his books. I agree with pp that Thinner is fantastic.
Needful Things and Salems Lot old but very good too.

DunnoIfImOverreacting · 02/12/2022 20:48

Another vote for Thinner

Beachsidesunset · 02/12/2022 20:49

Dolores Claiborne. Not supernatural, utterly compelling.

ronswansonstache · 02/12/2022 20:51

I really enjoyed Under the Dome!

LabRat90 · 02/12/2022 20:51

Definitely the Bachman books! They're four shortish stories and are fantastically harrowing. Nothing scary like IT, more like dystopian scenarios and such.

RinklyRomaine · 02/12/2022 20:53

Rose Madder, Insomnia, Gerald's Game. And Dolores Claiborne. Always found it mad such a misogynist wrote any of these. Creepy but not screamers.

Soproudoflionesses · 02/12/2022 21:03

I like Pet Semetary

hairycabbage · 02/12/2022 21:07

Is salems lot really terrifying? I haven't downloaded it yet so could return it free of charge...
Too much choice now Grin

reread it a few times and the tv series was also excellent.

I really enjoyed Salem's Lot as a teenager. It is a really good story, you'll enjoy it.

You are now inspiring me to listen to this books on night time walks...Smile. audible you said?

I've read Needful Things a few times but got the audible version read by Stephen King recently - it's so good, he's really funny. It's about 20 hours long though!

I do a 30 minute walk every night and as it's dark by 430 it's always dark when I'm out- I plug in my headphones and turn audible on then off I go! I managed the Outsider in recent weeks without freaking myself out too much!
Dh has a habit of phoning to ask something innocent then trying to scare me though 🤣

Agree with PPs on The Stand and also The Bachman Books. Perfect novellas.

Sounds like a perfect way to unwind from a day WFH... dark here by 3.30. It would get me out as well and I can revisit all the Stephen King books I read as a teenager. 😀

Dolores Claiborne 😃 it's my favourite. Vera Donovan is a fabulous character

It's honestly one of my favourite parts of the day. I have a fairly long commute so listen to at least 60-90 minutes a day, hence why Stephen King's 24 hour audible books are perfect

I found it scary but then I’m quite easily scared

DuncanBiscuits · 03/12/2022 19:57

I really enjoyed Duma Key and Dr Sleep.

His short story collections are great, too.

thenightsky · 03/12/2022 19:59

I started The Stand one week before I went into labour with my first and finished it whilst breast feeding and on mat leave. Brilliant novel.

Pet Semetary is one novel I loved, but wished I'd never read as it has stayed with me till this day. Utterly terrifying.

Gerald's Game is wonderfully tense and scary.

Currently reading The Stqnd for the third time - best book ever!

hairycabbage · 04/12/2022 19:40

I have downloaded salems lot and 22.11.63... it sure which one I'll start with (my dc joined me for my walk during daylight hours today so I've missed my slot!) but I shall report back
Thank you for all the tips, they've been really helpful

The Dark Tower series and all the adjacent books.

I describe it as - cowboy, fantasy, Sci fi, post apocalyptic.

Fractiontoomuchfennel · 02/03/2023 18:39

The set of 4 novellas called ‘Different Seasons’ is fantastic. Three of the stories have been filmed as The Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me and Apt Pupil respectively. Not horrory at all. I also remember loving a collection of his short stories. I’ll try to find the name of the collection.
