I've just started reading The Blacktongue Thief.

I'm listening to Hold Back The Stars on Borrow Box.

I read 100% on Kindle. I am new to audio books. It is great to listen when carrying out mundane tasks, makes me feel productive.

What are you reading today?

I loved that Tristan Gooley book - I feel I need to take it with me on a walk.

ThreeKneeRepeater · 20/10/2022 16:57

I’m reading Shuggie Bain. I got it from the library and from what I can gather it seems to affect people in different ways.
I’ve only just started it, so I’ve yet to see what effect it has on me.

I have just read that @ThreeKneeRepeater. It is very gritty. I thought it was well written, but there are parts of the story that if I had been watching it as a drama I would have averted my eyes. I read it with a horrible fascination.

garlictwist · 21/10/2022 19:15

I've almost finished London Belongs to Me which was recommended on one of the MN threads. I've enjoyed it.

MissyB1 · 21/10/2022 19:36

I’m half way through a fascinating one, “Tell me the truth about love” by Susanna Abse. She is a relationship counsellor and she shares some of the couples journeys through counselling in this book.

LittleCrackers · 21/10/2022 19:36

I've just finished All Your Perfects by C Hoover and, although VERY different from my usual genre I really enjoyed it, made me feel all gooey inside 😊

My usual are Lisa Jewell and as a PP mentioned, Blood Orange, Chalk Man, etc.

The Last Act of Love is a wonderful read but be warned, it is upsetting.

Yes it was a difficult but wonderful read. I am in awe of how well she told it.

Doublevision5 · 21/10/2022 20:45

I'm reading The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Perfect for this time of year and I'm really enjoying it!

I've got Lessons in Chemistry lined up next, or possibly The Mad Women's Ball.

BaconAndAvocado · 21/10/2022 20:54

Bideshi I loved Still Life.
Wonderful, warm characters and loved the Italian setting too.

SilentHedges · 21/10/2022 21:04

For the spooky season, I've just finished Silverweed Road by Simon Crook. Mystical realism horror short stories, but all interlink to feel more like a novel. Highly original, Were-Foxes, killer Jackdaws, and I won't look at Cuttlefish the same way again.

Purpleavocado · 21/10/2022 21:13

I'm reading Cloud Cuckoo Land, half way through and loving it so far. Listening to White Trash Warlock which is free on audible unlimited, it's surprisingly good.

Winterscomingagain · 21/10/2022 22:43

I'm reading the Whalebone Theatre, it's an interesting gentle read. I like the strong characterisation of the children.

Wildernesstips · 22/10/2022 06:33

I’m now about 100 pages into Walking on Glass by Iain Banks but it’s not really doing much for me. Not sure whether to stick with it or abandon.

PrunellaMcTat · 22/10/2022 09:16

Just started The Twyford Code by Janice Hallett.
Seen a few comments from MNers who found it a bit dull. Will give it a go. I quite liked her other one - The Appeal.

Potterurotter · 23/10/2022 20:30

Im reading the invisible guardian, want to read on but its about 6/10 so far

I've just finished The Midwife by Tricia Cresswell. Really enjoyed it. I like novels with a factual background. Reading Orphans of the Storm by Celia Imrie now, she's built a story round some pretty awesome research on two children who survived Titanic disaster.
Ambrose Perry books are fab, can't remember who was about to start one.

I really enjoyed Orphans of the Storm.

Currently reading The Jane Austen Book Club - I've had a copy for years but hadn't got round to reading it. I'm quite enjoying it, and will pass it on to a charity shop once I've finished it.

RightOnTheEdge · 24/10/2022 11:36

Mogginsthemog I was put off Blood Orange by the reviews saying the main character was unlikeable but I found it in a charity shop so gave it a go. I agree about her being irritating at first but it really surprised me because I couldn't put it down. I think it's one of the stand out ones I've read this year along with Lessons in Chemistry.

I've just finished Act of Oblivion by Robert Harris. I'm trying to choose between finishing The Snow Child
(which I didn't finish because my ds had a nose bleed all over it, but now I've got another copy)
Or innocent by Erin Kinsley. Which is a detective/murder one.
I can't decide what mood I'm in.

ryley · 24/10/2022 14:36

The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.

user159 · 24/10/2022 14:39

Currently reading The Paris Library. A war time story. I often go back to things like this even though we all know what happened. An easy, interesting read.

I've just downloaded it starts with us so that will be next!

TonTonMacoute · 24/10/2022 17:22

Taste by Stanley Tucci.

Can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a book this much although I wasn’t sure I would like it, as I’m not really into sleb memoirs.

Saucery · 24/10/2022 17:31

Just finished Shrines Of Gaiety by Kate Atkinson, started a thread about how utterly underwhelming it is.
Reading the latest Rebus. As convoluted, tough and good as the rest.

I LOVED Shrines of Gaiety!
Definitely not KA’s best (that’s Behind the Scenes at the Museum and all the Jackson Brodies) but still a fantastic read.

Wildernesstips · 24/10/2022 20:40

Taste is on my Christmas wish list (and I have a small crush on Stanley Tucci).

I quite enjoyed Blood Orange, though it isn’t really my usual genre.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 25/10/2022 16:30

Re-reading books including Young Entry by Molly Keane (MJ Farrell) - which is a favourite, quite light and fluffy!

PrunellaMcTat · 27/10/2022 07:20

Oh gosh, I just started American Dirt on audiobook. I always have an audiobook for the gym - I'm only at chapter 3 and I've almost cried on the treadmill twice. What a brilliant narrator. What an appalling start to the story. Amazing so far.
