I've just started reading The Blacktongue Thief.

I'm listening to Hold Back The Stars on Borrow Box.

I read 100% on Kindle. I am new to audio books. It is great to listen when carrying out mundane tasks, makes me feel productive.

What are you reading today?

ZitteEBuoni I feel sad about HM every time I pick up the book now.

Saucery · 12/10/2022 20:20

What Just Happened?! by Marina Hyde. A collection of her newspaper articles from 2016 - 2022.
Also, Shrines Of Gaiety by Kate Atkinson, but I’m finding it difficult to get into. Choppy, undefined characters, bit pastiche-y (but knowing the author, that could be the literary conceit she’s hung this particular book on!).

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 12/10/2022 20:30

Re-reading them man and boy series by Tong Parsons and enjoying it as much as the first time.

Just finished dying day by vaseem khan and loved it.

Have an Ambrose Parry book (my first) to read next / hope it will be good as I really enjoy Christopher brookmyre

American Dirt

I thought this was one of the best books I've ever read!

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 12/10/2022 20:45

I have been re reading the time police by Jodi Taylor. In readiness for her new one out tom!!!!

BrandyandGinger · 12/10/2022 20:52

A thriller called Black Widows, about a Mormon man who has been murdered by one of his three wives. Not my usual kind of book but I'm in the mood for a page-turner. It's pretty good so far.

Hotandbothereds · 12/10/2022 20:52

I’ve just finished Of women and Salt by Gabriela Garcia, absolutely loved it! It’s the story of five generations of women in Cuba & the US, and for a first novel it’s incredible, very excited to see what she writes next.

Then I’ve just started The Sentence by Louise Edrich, I’ve never read anything by her before and I’m not even sure where I picked up the recommendation from but really enjoying it so far, quite a dark comedy to it.

Chateaudiaries · 12/10/2022 20:53

I’ve asked for What Just Happened Marina Hyde, as a Christmas gift.

MrsJackRackham · 13/10/2022 04:10

I've just finished The Midwife by Tricia Cresswell. Really enjoyed it. I like novels with a factual background. Reading Orphans of the Storm by Celia Imrie now, she's built a story round some pretty awesome research on two children who survived Titanic disaster.
Ambrose Perry books are fab, can't remember who was about to start one.

Dogroses · 13/10/2022 04:15

I listened to about 26 hours of the audiobook before giving up and getting the book from the library. Feels different reading it now - almost too poignant.

Also reading 'first love' by gwendoline Riley which is brilliant - finely tuned and compressed and quite gut wrenching in places.

Dogroses · 13/10/2022 04:17

I agree. As a mature woman I feel like there's not much there for me.

Dogroses · 13/10/2022 04:18

Should have been a reply re: Ian McEwan's early stories being immature.

I’ve just finished a really good book called “Everyone is still alive” by Cathy Rentzenbrink. Couldn’t put it down. So I’ve just downloaded 3 more of hers! I’m starting with “The last act of love” which is about her own brother who had an horrific accident and was left in a vegetative state.

The Last Act of Love is a wonderful read but be warned, it is upsetting.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 13/10/2022 11:06

I just finished Resurrection by Derek Landy (in the Skulduggery Pleasant series; yes I am a great big child) which I very much enjoyed. OTT, and rather too many characters to keep track of now, but his world-building is really skilful and they make me laugh.

Currently on The Book of Souls by James Oswald. I've read it before but revisiting to catch up on the series. I like this series; it's well written and the faintly supernatural element works well in my view.

I'm also waiting on the new MacBride. Not out until February though, I think. I keep secretly hoping he'll go back to Logan McRae/Roberta Steel novels but I think those characters and that series has been tied up now.

user159 · 13/10/2022 11:15

I read American dirt over a year ago and I still think about it often.

This week I've ready it ends with us and verity by Colleen Hoover - totally got swept in the hype when I saw them both at the library. I did enjoy them though, easy reading and it ends with us has a powerful message.

Can't decide what to start next!

I have the Christie Affair on my kindle so probably that!

DappledYork · 13/10/2022 12:13

So disappointed and let down by The Christie Affair. Hope you like it better.

I'm about to start Haven by Emma Donaghue and have Chemistry lLssons on Audible.

user159 · 13/10/2022 12:16

Oh no! I haven't heard much about it so will give it a go! It was on offer for 99p so not the end of the world if it's a bit rubbish. Thanks for the feedback.

I've read lessons in chemistry recently and enjoyed it - hope you do too.

DappledYork · 13/10/2022 12:28

Yes, I did mean Lessons in Chemistry. I'm in for a horrible shock if I've accidentally downloaded actual Lessons in Chemistry! 😖

Sagittariusrising · 13/10/2022 15:01

@AlwaysFoldingWashing - I really enjoyed the first Ambrose Parry book and have the second waiting to read. I hope you like it.

Currently reading MW Craven's Black Summer, second of the Washington Poe series which I'm really enjoying but my copy of Queen High by CJ Carey arrived this morning and I'm now desperate to start reading it as I thoroughly enjoyed Widowland. CJ Carey is a pseudonym of Jane Thynne who writes the Clara Vine series (which I also recommend and am really hoping for another one at some point).

I have a few pages of The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell to go then I'm going to start The Vegetarian by Han Kang.

I'm reading that, and loving it. I only have a few pages to go.

Mogginsthemog · 13/10/2022 18:13

Now reading Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce. The main character's quite irritating, but it's definitely a page turner.

Wildernesstips · 13/10/2022 21:29

I am reading An Experiment in Love by Hilary Mantel (first of hers I have ever read), and am listening to H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald (I think).

I loved American Dirt.

It’s definitely the season to get comfortable and read a book.

mondaytosunday · 13/10/2022 21:52

I'm reading Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club. I got one of his books for my son, trying to get him in to reading, and he passed it to me. I'm really enjoying it.

Bideshi · 13/10/2022 22:00

Ulysses third time round. I'd forgotten how laugh-out-loud funny it is.

I've got 'The Mirror and the Light' sitting there waiting until I feel strong enough to read it. I did have a sneaky look at the end just to inoculate myself against getting too upset.
Anybody read Sarah Winman 'Still Life'?

BamBamBilla · 20/10/2022 10:23

I'm currently re-reading The Book of Tresspass by Nick Hayes which was truly fascinating about the history of the land in this country but its so packed full of information I need to read it again.

I'm also reading The Walker's Guide to Outdoor Clues and Signs by Tristan Gooley which is I guess a bit self explanatory from the title but I predict I will have to re-read this again because its full of things that fascinate me. Walking and the general outdoors is one of my other interests.

I'm listening to the Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz in audiobook which I'm enjoying. I understand its a series so I'll probably add them to my to be read list too.

I always have a book and an audiobook on the go at the same time because I need quiet when I'm reading so I'm listening to fiction novels when doing something else or when I'm out and about to just let the story words wash over me.
