If I like The Thursday Murder Club

What else will I like? I’ve struggled with many books recently, manage a few chapters then leave them for weeks unread, but the Richard Osman books I can read without wanting to put them down.
I even struggled a bit with the latest Strike saga tbh, despite waiting impatiently for it arrive!

Can anyone recommend something as easy readable as Osman please?
TIA.

Death and Croissants by Ian Moore

A Spoonful Of Murder by J.M. Hall

Murder Before Evensong by Rev. Richard Coles

ByTheNine · 20/09/2022 22:17

The Jackson Brodie books by Kate Atkinson have a similar pace and tone. There are five I think so would keep you going for a bit

ChessieFL · 21/09/2022 05:28

Try The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood. There’s a sequel out soon.

Dougieowner · 21/09/2022 05:58

Agatha Raisin.

Very light-hearted and based around my area of the Cotswolds.
Lots of books in the series.

SofiaAmes · 21/09/2022 06:08

I am loving the Whistable Pearl series (that the tv series is based on) by Julie Wassmer and Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Mysteries Series (takes place in NYC at the turn of the century) and Victoria Thompson's Counterfit Lady Series and Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy Series and Royal Spyness Series. Not as sophisticated as Thursday Mysteries, but great historical mystery fun.

bakehimawaytoys · 21/09/2022 07:50

The Anthony Horowitz series that starts with The Word is Murder is very good. They are ostensibly about a detective called Hawthorne but are written as true crime novels with Horowitz as the narrator.

I also saw that Liz Truss (of Eats Shoots and Leaves) has written one which is branded exactly the same as the Richard Osman books so is probably similar.

bakehimawaytoys · 21/09/2022 07:51

Oh and Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz is brilliant too! A detective story within a detective story - very clever.

StrikeandRobin · 21/09/2022 13:34

Wow! Lots of suggestions, thanks so much.
I will get googling and get a few and see how I go, I like TTMC gang and love seeing how their characters develop as we go along, I’m hoping I can find another series of books to enjoy.
Thank you all.

Ooh lurking.

MyFirstMyLastMyEverythingBagel · 21/09/2022 18:33

Exit by Belinda Bauer is in a similar vein - elderly protagonist, good humour in parts. Would definitely recommend if you enjoyed the Osman books 📚

AssignedNorthern · 21/09/2022 18:36

Ooh placemarking to come back and get some great recommendations. I too loved the Thursday murder club books!

Try The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood. There’s a sequel out soon.

Oh yes forgotten about those he wrote Death in paradise for bbc

ElizabethBest · 21/09/2022 19:50

The Sally Lockhart series by Phillip Pullman. It’s technically YA but has a similar tone and utterly gripping.

Some of William Boyd’s books might hit the spot? Ordinary Thunderstorms, or Restless?

JulesJules · 21/09/2022 20:29

I love Elly Griffiths - Dr Ruth Galloway series

PrunellaMcTat · 30/09/2022 04:43

The Appeal by Janice Hallet fit the bill last summer when I was missing the Thursday Murder crew.

StrikeandRobin · 30/09/2022 15:30

Thanks all, I’ve ordered a couple of your suggestions. Now I just need the opportunity to read them!

I believe that'll be Lynne Truss ;-)

And I second the Horowitz recommendations. I'm glad he's prolific.

@ChessieFL The Marlow Murder Club was quite good, DM is now really enjoying it. I didn’t love it as much as TTMC but will look out for the next one.

@MyFirstMyLastMyEverythingBagel I’ve just started reading Exit. I nearly put it down as the opening chapters were, sadly, a little close to home but then WOW! What a twist of direction! I’m now really looking for to being able to get in to it & the longer nights mean I will have more time to curl up with a book.

I’m still looking through all the other titles suggested here to line up my next read.

I would add Faith Martin's Hilary Greene series of books. I've found them easy to read and my mum has enjoyed them too.

I'm always on the lookout for book recommendations too.

SereneSemolina · 28/11/2022 21:24

There were some kindle deals on Fiona Leitch and Hannah Hendy that I haven't read but might fit the bill.

12roundsofwhitelowfatspread · 28/11/2022 21:29

I’d add the Fethering Murder series by Simon Brett - similar tone, nice characterisation, two neighbours who end up investigating a series of murders (generally 1 per book 😁)

fruitpastille · 28/11/2022 21:33

I'm just reading the latest Osman and I've got the second Horowitz Hawthorne book ready for when I've finished!
