Which Agatha Christie story is this? Contains spoilers.

I saw it mentioned on another thread but the poster understandably didn't want to spoil it for anyone.

It's a Miss Marple story where a key element of a plot hinges on a misspelling that could be mistaken for a printing error?

I'm going through a stage where Agatha Christie books are about all that I can read at present and I really want to read this one.

TIA

A Murder is Announced (spelling of 'inquire' /'enquire', and a person's name)

SoSaidTheSwan · 23/05/2022 13:30

Thank you so much! I'll read that one next.

Or the Moving Finger "I cant go on..." in an apparent suicide note

ilovesooty · 23/05/2022 13:34

Yes, that's the one.

SoSaidTheSwan · 23/05/2022 13:34

MsMcGonagall Thank you too. I'll read both.

A Murder is Announced I mean.

Johnnysgirl · 23/05/2022 13:36

Is it the Lottie/Lettie thing in A Murder is Announced?

Comefromaway · 23/05/2022 13:39

Yes, Murder is Announced, enquire/inquire

Comefromaway · 23/05/2022 13:39

Lottie/Lettie was a slip of the tongue

SydneyCarton · 23/05/2022 13:40

I think “Lottie/Letty” is only spoken rather than written or printed. It sounds more like The Moving Finger with the phrase “I can’t go on” being read in two different contexts

Comefromaway · 23/05/2022 13:44

* further spoiler

enquire/inquire was written though. Miss Marple deduced that someone would not change their spelling part way through their life therefore Letty had died instead of Lottie

HumphreyCobblers · 23/05/2022 13:46

Moving Finger is my absolute favourite Christie. I think the characterisation is much stronger than it often is in the other books and the love story is very sweet.

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 23/05/2022 13:49

Moving Finger also where Burton/Barton changed on an envelope

Comefromaway · 23/05/2022 13:49

I love the whole episode where she goes to buy some decent clothes at last. Totally irrelevant to the plot but really nice.

stepuporshutup · 23/05/2022 13:49

The moving finger, the spelling incorrect on a type written envelope. Murder is announced is about a name change not a spelling mistake. Both good reads

AutumnOrange · 23/05/2022 13:49

There is another but it is a Poirot where there is a torn label of something - a medication I think - and it was a small m rather than a big M. It was the housekeeper who did it and she poisoned herself then gave herself an emetic afterwards. Can anyone remember that?

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 23/05/2022 13:50

I think that's Sad Cypress

SoSaidTheSwan · 23/05/2022 13:52

Thanks all. I'm looking forward to reading them.

Another torn corner of a letter where 'she' becomes 'he' in Lord Edgeware dies.

AutumnOrange · 23/05/2022 13:53

Sad Cypress - thank you!

MsMcGonagall · 23/05/2022 13:55

I've just read all the Ngaio Marsh whodunnit novels - If you run out of Agatha Christies I would thoroughly recommend Ngaio Marsh.

SoSaidTheSwan · 23/05/2022 13:56

I'm adding Sad Cypress and LED to my list.

MsMcGonagall Thank you for the recommendation. I'll definitely try Ngaio Marsh.

On the whole I prefer Miss Marple but I do like Cat Amongst the Pigeons

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 23/05/2022 14:03

I think Cat Among the Pigeons was my least favourite because of being out of my comfort zone of big houses and suspicious-looking relatives.

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 23/05/2022 14:05

One of my favourites is Peril at End House and I think Poirot solved that one also with the help of a written letter.
