Which Agatha Christie story is this? Contains spoilers.

I saw it mentioned on another thread but the poster understandably didn't want to spoil it for anyone.

It's a Miss Marple story where a key element of a plot hinges on a misspelling that could be mistaken for a printing error?

I'm going through a stage where Agatha Christie books are about all that I can read at present and I really want to read this one.

TIA

I think I liked the boarding school aspect

I like The Mirror Crack'd because on the face of it there is absolutely no reason why the murderer would want to kill the victim, but when you find out why, not only is there a big motive but the info was there for the reader all along.

One of my favourites is Peril at End House and I think Poirot solved that one also with the help of a written letter.

Yes he did - the tv adaptation of that scared me 😂
I love Poirot and Miss Marple equally. Can’t beat David Suchet or Joan Hickson but I do have a spot for Margaret Rutherford (?) but I struggle with the Tommy and Tuppence books.

Ditto.

Comefromaway · 23/05/2022 14:10

And you sort of end up feeling sorry for the murderer.

Johnnysgirl · 23/05/2022 14:14

Didn't they shoehorn Miss Marple into a Tommy and Tuppence tv adaptation?
By the pricking of my thumbs, I think. Nothing like the book.

AutumnOrange · 23/05/2022 14:15

Was Cat Among The Pigeons with crime writer in it?

Yes! That really pissed me off.
There was another tv adaptation and they changed who the murderer was - but can’t remember which one.

AutumnOrange · 23/05/2022 14:16

Didn’t itv make Tuppence an alcoholic too?

No, it has the schoolgirl in and the tennis raquets.

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 23/05/2022 14:22

@AutumnOrange you might be thinking of the latest abomination of Ordeal by Innocence. But there may have been others.

Shock. Try to think of it; that'll bug me all day!

Ah, I didn't watch that. I won't, now.

Comefromaway · 23/05/2022 14:23

They changed the murderer in Body in the Library

The Mirror Crack'd is supposedly based on a true story - the actress Gene Tierney caught rubella while pregnant during a USO tour in WWII and gave birth to a severely disabled daughter.

"More than a year after the little girl was born, Gene was approached at a party by a former woman Marine who said they had met at a USO canteen two years earlier. The woman added that she had been quarantined at the time with the measles but had sneaked out to see Tierney anyway. “I just had to go,” the woman gushed innocently. “You were always my favorite.” Stunned, the actress said nothing."

That's interesting, I didn't know that.

Ariadne Oliver is the crime writer who appears in a few books/adaptations - Hallowe'en Party, Third Girl, Dead Man's Folly. Agatha Christie is supposed to have created her as a sort of jokey self-portrait

LouisRenault · 23/05/2022 14:47

And Cards on the Table. Which is an interesting one, because it links Poirot with Superintendent Battle and Colonel Race, who appear in some of AC's non-Poirot and Marple books.

I got about five minutes into the most recent Tommy and Tuppence adaptation, then turned off in disgust. Setting completely wrong, characters too old and quite wrong.

AutumnOrange · 23/05/2022 15:13

Ooh never knew that about The Mirror Crack’d - Angela Lansbury was a crap Miss Marple - even though I loved the film - but I loved her in Death on The Nile

I don’t think there has been a successful tv adaptation of any AC stories with Tommy and Tuppence.

ilovesooty · 23/05/2022 15:22

Towards Zero is a great one with Battle but they changed the relationship between people in the film.

I love Crooked House - the human psychology is fascinating. Christie once described it as "the most loved of all my children".

No, they ignore the post-WW1 setting of Secret Adversary, which is quite important to the story, and the characters are never as young and unsophisticated as they should be. How hard can it be? They managed to get Poirot and Miss Marple exactly right.

tobee · 26/05/2022 04:09

I liked the ones with James Warwick and Francesca Annis at the time. But they look very old hat now; dated production values, flat lighting and not great sets.

tobee · 26/05/2022 04:14

Ha! Just looked at a clip from YouTube of above and it featured Pat from Eastenders in it!
