I'm currently reading Life after Life and The Bee Keeper of Aleppo. Both excellent but heavy. I found out today my youngest daughter will be needing open heart surgery in a few months. I could do with some uplifting funny comforting reads. I've recently re-read all the Austen novels. I like The Rivers of London Series, Enjoyed the Thursday Murder Club recently and also like some funny chick lit. Any ideas?

Veronica Henry writes some fun, happy novels set usually in Devon. Hope all goes well with your daughter, love.

I like Jane Fallon books for this sort of thing. Taylor Jenkins Reid (Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Daisy Jones and The Six etc), The Rosie Effect, The Cactus, Needlemouse, loved The Magpie Murders, Miss Benson's Beetle.

Frank n Stan’s Bucket list - really enjoyed these books
Frank and Stan

Jilly Cooper - good reads, (and can be steamy)
Jackie Collins - as above

The Tent, The Bucket and Me .... can't remember who it is by.

There's a sequel to the Thursday Murder Club called the Man who died twice and it's excellent

Ronan Hession's Leonard and Hungry Paul is quite light, funny in places, and hopefully will leave you with a sense of zen-like calm...

All the Adrian Mole books make me laugh out loud no matter how many times I read them

I went through a stage of needing comfort reads recently. I ended up reading less modern books so:
the making of a marchioness frances hodgson burnett
Miss pettigrew lives for a day - winifred watson
the diary of a provincial lady (and sequels) - EM Delafield
plus re-reading classic agatha christie point

The Stranger Times, McDonnell. Funny and light. Similar to the Rivers of London but set in Manchester

Simon Brett’s Fethering series is wonderful and just what the doctor ordered. Cosy mystery, unlikely (female) amateur detectives and wonderful, witty writing. He writes women very, very well.

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine and the keeper of lost things are both lovely.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus is a lovely standalone book.

Second this 👆

Georgette Heyer. Much more than just romance - well researched, well written, witty, brilliantly drawn secondary characters, and you know that nothing bad will happen to any character you like - other than in The Spanish Bride and An Infamous Army, which are about military campaigns.

P G Wodehouse.

I'm so sorry about your daughter and I really hope everything goes well.

I always tend to turn to Marian Keyes. I like her book Angels and at the moment I am reading The Other Side of the Story which is very funny.

I would recommend this book too, especially the audio book. It’s one of the best and funniest narrations I’ve heard. I’d also add the witches series from Terry Pratchetts Discworld, starting from Wyrd Sisters. That is a serious that just gets better and funnier as it goes on.

BistoBear · 13/05/2022 11:01

Away with the Penguins by Hazel Prior is a lovely light hearted read, I read it after reading American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins which is a fantastic book but very heavy. I needed something less traumatic and Away with the Penguins matched that requirement perfectly.

I hope all goes well with your daughter 💐

paisley256 · 13/05/2022 11:05

I also recommend The tent, the bucket and me.

I read it whilst in hospital having my mastectomy and have started it again now my cancer has spread. Non stop silliness and laughter!

TeaMeBasil · 13/05/2022 22:22

Another one for The Tent, The Bucket and Me! It's by Emma Kennedy. Brilliant.

Brilliant enough I've reread it and listened on audible 😂

TeaMeBasil · 13/05/2022 22:23

Oh I've just read you post properly paisley256 - wishing you the best Flowers
