Ooh - really disliked WH - wanted all the characters to fall into a big hole and stay there, I'm afraid. Read it as a teenager. I came to Austen only recently, and really love her, though.

BandofMothers · 07/01/2008 10:27

I wonder why that is LoveAngel. I love Lizzy from P&P, she is JA's fave heroine too, and based somewhat on herself, I believe. I love that Jane Austen never married, but supported herself with her writing, I love that idea of a self sufficient woman in a time when women were so dependent on getting a husband
It is something that I loved watching Miss Potter, when she gets sick of her mother, but doesn't wan t to marry, so she goes to the bank to see if her books have earnt her enough money to buy her own house, and the banker says, Umm, you have enough money to buy about 7 Estates!!!

YEEEEEEEEEEES...........>>

maybe you should re-read the rainbow then
as book club exercise of re-reading book you loved when younger...would be interesting!

i actually love d h lawerence...very much
and thomas hardy

all the relentless tv period dramas put me orf reading jane eyre n all that...they go overkill on it..
holds no interest you are not alone loveangel!

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/01/2008 10:41

I might do that Hairy. I loved the adaption of Cranford, but have no desire to read it.

Wuthering Heights isn't dreary. OK, it rains a bit and is basically about an entire family being psychologically tortured because of a slight misdemeanour years ago: Yorkshire is still like that! Try Anne Bronte's "Wildfell Hall" it is by far the best book written by the Bronte sisters and has alot of the same themes as Wuthering Heights (but isn't set in Yorkshire).

mrsruffallo · 13/01/2008 20:56

It's been a few years since I read it but I think Wuthering Heights is wonderful! The high romance, the intensity, the comic relief in Joseph ( is it Joseph?), the servant.
My best friend and I read this to each other whilst we were travelling- we had met a man each and were madly in love for the first time and I have loved it ever since.

cornsilk · 13/01/2008 20:57

I loveit, I read it every few years.

rantinghousewife · 13/01/2008 20:58

I hate it too MAS, you are not alone!

Quattrocento · 13/01/2008 21:03

truly wonderful

you should be on the Nick Hornby thread MAS

mrsruffallo · 13/01/2008 21:05

ranting housewife- I thought it was you who started this thread at first!
Come on- the passion and romance of it all! Dashing you head on the wall in frustration and running out onto the moors crying' Cathy! Cathy!' in a desperate
manner- Go on, try it now!!!! You need rain, wind and candles flickering...
Seriously- I agree with those who say it MUST be read aloud

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 13/01/2008 21:11

true raw passion i loved it but also devoured hardy with the same gusto

rantinghousewife · 13/01/2008 21:13

Think I am not girly enough for Wuthering Heights Mrs R

expatinscotland · 13/01/2008 21:14

i had no sympathy for either Katherine or Heathcliff.

they were both vapid, not very nice people and it's never pleasant to read about such characters.

rantinghousewife · 13/01/2008 21:16

And everytime I imagine Heathcliffe nowadays, he looks like Cliff Richard. Did he play him or something, or was that a bad dream?

cornsilk · 14/01/2008 12:55

LOL as Cliff Richard as Heathcliff! Maybe he did play him, I have a glimmer of this somewhere in my memory as well.

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/02/2008 17:36

OK, I gave up and didn't go to book group...now we're on to the Kite Runner sequel or whatever it is....
