How many books do you read in a year?

Roughly. I know it varies and depends on how thick they are etc...

I keep a list of what I've read (anal maybe, but I like it) and realise that I'm reading fewer books these days (although I always have something on the go).

So, to answer my own question, I read 20 - 25 books a year.

A book a week, sometimes 2. Have never kept a list but it makes sense - sometimes you find yourself reading a book you have read before - a little frustrating especially when you really didn't think you had read it!

pyjamagirl · 09/01/2008 17:26

about three a month just started keeping a list though

all is right with the world......

went to Waterstones for my 'real' visit this morning (the other day was a pretend one as I didn't get to have my coffee and read in peace for an hour in my fave chair!).

bought 4 books ( AND ), and then went for my coffee......and they had my cake in today (am allergic to milk so have very limited choice re cakes...waterstones coffee shop is the only place with dairy free/gluten free cakes!!!).....so can do my proper dance dance at last.

I got ......

Buried - mark Billingham
Skin privilege - Karin Slaughter
Deluge (a CSI NY spin off book)
Secret Diary of a Demented Housewife - Naimh Greene.

quick tip.......do NOT, under any circumstances, buy and start to read Secret Diary of a Demented Housewife while drinking coffee in public. You (if you have the ironic sense of humour I have), will laugh, splutter and choke your coffee in front of many (in my case, two old dears having a nice chat about furniture and new hoovers).

It is very embarressing, and you may just ruin your very new book with coffee stains too!!!

the book looks like a very good, funny, easy read......but as the author clearly seems to know motherhood very very well, and has a very sarcastic sense of humour that is well suited to most mothers, it is essential that if you laugh inappropiately (like I have been known to do, to the point of embarressing friends in the past), then read it at home!!!!!

I was granted a few minutes in Waterstone's yesterday and picked up The Savage Garden, The Interpretation of Murder, something about the Silk Road by Colin Thubron and the Thousand Suns book. I think they'll be going in our shipment so I won't see them again until March, lol!

I think it was something like 40 something last year (very sadly I wondered this about a year ago so decided to keep a journal of all the books I'd read or reread and gave them rattings) -yes I'm sad

fullmoonfiend · 19/01/2008 12:35

Average around 1-2 a week. Quick reader and pathalogically addicted to print

sabaidii · 20/01/2008 08:49

I read loads of books. I don't actually keep count, but it's more than 60 for sure.

I adore reading.

Another avid reader here! I can easily get through two - three books a week. I started on Enid Blyton as a kid then went from there. I read everywhere and am another one who chooses handbags on whether a book will fit in or not I am having driving lessons at the moment and am dying to pass but at the same time will be a bit sad my days of reading on public transport will be over.

Dinalongcow - do Amazon pay you for reviews? How did you arrange this? It sounds fab

Was hoping for a few recommendations too if you can. I studied English Literature at A level and although I loved the reading part I got really fed up with annotating every paragraph in every book. As a result I now tend to veer towards escapism books involving little concentration (a bit like watching Corrie every week I guess) I normally read the dreaded chick lit as it serves this purpose , but am now a bit bored and want to read something a bit meatier but not something where I have to scrutinise every chapter for a hidden meaning! My favourite authors at the moment are Jane Green, Adele Parkes, Lisa Jewell, Marian Keyes, Lesley Pearse and Martina Cole. I also love Tess by Thomas Hardy. Any suggestions for some good books to move onto?

notalone, dont know if you will see this but I felt I ought to answer your question, even if it is a little late!

I write reviews for Dooyoo and ciao which can make me up to £10 a week in Amazon vouchers/cash (if I write a review everyday-takes about 40 mins, although I am not usually that organised). I post reviews on both sites and supplement with surveys and earnings from reward/research sites.

I made £400 last year and spent it all on books after DH made it perfectly clear he would not look kindly if my level of spending on books continued.

I also use bookmooch.com where you send books to people in exchange for points, which you then spend on people sending books to you. I have been a member since the beginning of January and have sent out 23 books and 'mooched' 48 .

I am currently reading three or four books a week so need to keep my habit fed!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 03/02/2008 17:36

Well so far this year I've read 4. So I'm guessing about 40-50 a year.

FlossieT · 04/02/2008 10:24

Wow, you are all very impressive readers!! I would have described myself as a print addict (would read the back of the cereal packet in desperation if nothing else available...) but I think my reading volume has dropped enormously of late. And sometimes I have fallow patches where I don't feel like reading at all and get through nothing.

If any of you are on Facebook, there are applications there for keeping your book lists in - I use iRead, but there's Visual Bookshelf too, and probably more besides.

So far this year I've read 7 books and am on my 8th, but I have been off work for 3 weeks so have had more time available (plus one of them was Alan Bennett's The Uncommon Reader so dead short!)

I hardly ever watch telly (unless I'm folding laundry) and I stay up far too late. I blame Mumsnet and its ilk for reducing my reading time - if I spent less recreational time on the computer I'm sure I could get my reading rater up!!

TheHonEnid · 04/02/2008 10:27

between 30-50

I read good hard books though not those shitey jodi picoult ones

CatIsSleepy · 04/02/2008 10:41

mm about 100 probably
mostly while commuting....tis the only good thing about commuting, time to read
mostly bought cheapish from sussex stationers, or charity shops, or borrowed off my sisters who also read alot

I re-read alot too
best recent reads:
Notes from an exhibition
The prisoner of Zenda (v. swashbuckling, loved it)
WInter Tales (short stories all based on life in the Orkneys)

Saturn74 · 04/02/2008 10:45

Probably about 40 to myself.
And I read aloud about 30 to the DCs - books such as 'Peter Pan in Scarlet', 'The Wolves of Willoughby Chase', not Mr Men books!
