How many books do you read in a year?

Posey · 05/01/2008 22:14

Roughly. I know it varies and depends on how thick they are etc...

I keep a list of what I've read (anal maybe, but I like it) and realise that I'm reading fewer books these days (although I always have something on the go).

So, to answer my own question, I read 20 - 25 books a year.

at the library.

and another at the amazon orders and the time for yourself.

in fact, may have to hint lots to mr psycho for when/if we get to have the downstairs extended. we are planning an ADULTS ONLY lounge....may have to make it an adults lounge/library...(or maybe just MY lounge/library[mwhahahaaha])

Since DS was born 3 years ago maybe 20 a year. It was more like 100 a year before.

DingALongCow · 07/01/2008 17:39

Psycho, I finance my Amazon orders by writing reviews and doing surveys, I made £300 last year, so it doesnt cost DH anything (he might me less supportive if it did!).

Twinkie1 · 07/01/2008 17:44

I can read your average paperback in a day - scan read though - don't read much descriptive text - just the bones of the story - when they start warbling about green trees I switch off - I know trees are green I just don't care and want to know what happens next.

Really pisses DH off that I read so fast - he reads so slowly it drives me mad - impossible to read over his shoulder without getting cross!

And I never ever reread a book - I would get a few pages through and realise I had read it and that would be that!

SilentTerror · 07/01/2008 19:08

I am very similar to you Psych mum!
Usually read 2 a week,sometimes 3 or4 if I can't put them down!
Have bookcases overspilling everywhere too.
I buy any that I know I will love,ie by known authors, usually from Amazon.
I love the Amazon marketplace for second hand, and Abe books.#I also frequent charity shops and second hand bookshops, particularly on holiday!
I also go to the library once a fortnight and take a good stack out.
How do I find time??
Very little television!

Mercy · 07/01/2008 19:13

About 4 a year

Used to be one or 2 per week pre-children. Never been a highbrow type reader though.

Will now read what you lot manage (and how)

MuffinMclay · 07/01/2008 19:18

About one a week now. 3-4 a week before ds.

janeite · 07/01/2008 19:38

Yes, like Silentterror I find time to read by hardly ever watching television. The only TV I watch really is books related (eg the new "Sense And Sensibility" and "Ballet Shoes" are the only things I've watched throughout the whole of December and January so far) - and then I usually just end up complaining because they're not like the books! I also have a long bath every night with a book - that is my "me time" - if I haven't got anything to read for bath time I am foul-tempered and so will read anything in order to avoid this - have been known to lie in a bath for an hour and read 2 Famous Five books!!!!

Janeite shuffles off realising that she has just really lowered the tone.

wheelybug · 07/01/2008 19:47

Probably 50 or so since dd - would have been a lot more before. I buy most and have turned a spare room into a 'library' (its the smallest bedroom in the house so not too grand ).

Think I will start writing them down this year - sounds a good idea.

psychomum5 · 07/01/2008 20:35

well I think I am gonna have to go buy a pretty notbook tommorrow ready for starting a list.

I manage by being a fast reader, reading every spare moment to the point of watching TV while reading, and I also have at least half hour everyday while waiting outside school for the school run, cos if you don't get there early you don't gt parked at all.....altho at the reading time.

I read while mr psycho is re-fueling th car even........ignoring the kiddies of course!

also read on the loo, while cooking, while cuddling a poorly child in the middl of the night if they dopey enough, but too poorly for me to sleep IYGWIM.

I do so miss those early days breastfeding tho.....read tons then.

oooh....plus, there is a lot of times that I am in hospital with various kiddies (or even me), and of course it can be very boring, especially when said child is asleep and the TV has gone off!

IdrisTheDragon · 07/01/2008 20:40

I read at least 3 or 4 books a week, so at least 150-200 a year. A list would be a good idea - will try that one .

DH is always amazed how quickly I read - I am very much a skim reader whereas he takes much longer.

Do other people have a few books on the go at once? I have different books in different parts of the house so there's always something there .

RustyBear · 07/01/2008 20:41

Far fewer than I did two years ago (joined MN Feb 2006)

Onlyaphase · 07/01/2008 20:51

Read around 120 a year now, used to be about 5 a week before I had DD and when I was commuting daily. I too miss the breastfeeding days, used to be able to read just so much then

When we bought our first house and upgraded from our book-filled flat, we had a carpenter put shelving all around one room. It was so lovely! I miss it so much...we are downsizing at the moment, so I have sold lots of books and donated about 11 enormous boxes full too. More to go I think!

And now I'm not working I go to the library twice weekly and borrow yet more books. I like the fact you can order in whatever book you like - just brilliant!

DingALongCow · 07/01/2008 21:04

Idris- yep have four or five on the go at once in different rooms and a special pile of waterwarped and dogeared trashy books for the bath, so it doesnt matter if i drop them.

DD (2.5) likes to stroke my books on the bookshelves and asks wistfully how long until she can read mummy's books. Not long I suspect if she takes after me. She also panics if she needs the toilet and there arent any of her books in there for her to look at while she is there!

Posey · 07/01/2008 21:32

I really am amazed by how many books people can get through. Dh and I read about the same amount, both always read at bedtime. Dh used to think it was funny that I kept a list but now he does too, except he has his on scraps of paper!

OP posts:
morningpaper · 07/01/2008 21:35

I have kept a list this year and I read far far fewer books than I thought. Last year I read 28 books.

morningpaper · 07/01/2008 21:42

It would be interesting if the people who read loads kept lists

I started a list because someone asked me how many books I read a year and I was convinced it was over 100 ... having kept a list the real statistic is disappointingly low

Books that took a LONG time this year were Agent Zig Zag and Single Women (both non-fiction) - they took a couple of weeks each, I would read for ten minutes and then drop off

They WERE good books though

Quattrocento · 07/01/2008 21:50

Nah, I know for sure.

Total hours on trains per week = 13

Total hours on trains per week where there is no signal for my blackberry = 7

(I meantersay it's obvious that I can't do any work in those circumstances, innit?)

Add reading time in bed = 7

Add reading time at swimming lessons, hockey practice, tennis lessons, football and children's parties = 5

Gosh maybe I'm reading more than three books a week ...

suedonim · 07/01/2008 22:06

I've just bought this from the saintly Lakeland people. We should all buy one and come back this time next year to report on our results.

EachPeachPearMum · 07/01/2008 22:08

Before dd, 250+ a year.
Now, about 60 a year.

Loved Psycho and Earthymama's posts.... think we may all have been separated at birth, but you are both a little more eloquent than I am.

psychomum5 · 07/01/2008 22:10

I am not eloquant.....I just talk too much(and type too much too)

psychomum5 · 07/01/2008 22:12

and can't even spell eloquent

lilolilmanchester · 07/01/2008 22:13

a lot less since I joined Mumsnet....

Posey · 07/01/2008 22:14

Suedonim thats lovely. We'll reconvene in a year then?
