Book 1 - The House at Old Vine by Norah Lofts

This is book 2 of 3 of the Town House trilogy. It is a historical saga that starts in 1380 Suffolk (book 1) and ends in 1958 (book 3). It follows the lives of the people who live in a townhouse called The Old Vine in rural Suffolk. I grew up in the area that this is based on, so find it fascinating. They are all available on Kindle Unlimited at the moment. Very easy to read, hence why I am finished book 2 already!

Starting book 3 of the trilogy, as my book 2 of the year.

@mrsfeatherbottom I loved the first Seven Sisters book, I need to get on and read the others! Shame to hear she died recently though.

I know. So sad. I loved the whole series - you should definitely read them all.

stiltonandcrackers · 02/01/2022 13:08

I'd love to join!

I got back into reading last year and read 20 books. Am happy with that amount as have a 3 year old with me most of the time!!

This year is my year to read some classics. Maybe with a few contemporary books in the mix too. Will see how I go.

Have started the year with Little women a book I have wanted to read for years as I loved the old movie, as in the 1949 one. Am about half way through.

CaptainChannel · 02/01/2022 14:42

I'd love to join, I love reading but a hectic job and busy home life has led me to read much less than I would like. But, I have a new job that frees up a bit of time for me so I'm on a mission. I read a couple of books over Xmas but have already managed my first book of 2022

  1. How We Disappeared by Jing Jing Lee.

Loved it, partly because I lived in Singapore for several years and it was very evocative. I've started 'A Gentleman in Moscow' which I anticipate taking a while as it's quite long.

Hoping to manage 20-30 books this year.

Shinyandnew2022 · 02/01/2022 15:01

Ooh I really need this thread can I join you all?
I love reading and get enormous pleasure / contentment from having a decent book on the go - am determined that this year I am going to get a proper reading habit . I am terrible for scrolling my phone all evening.
It makes me sad to think of all the time I waste like that.

Got some recommendations to check out already - will look at Good reads.

I have a book on my kindle called Three Hours which I may start with - anyone read it ?

TheAnswerIsCake · 02/01/2022 15:11

@Shinyandnew2022 is that Three Hours by Rosamund Lupon? If so, that squeaked on to my top reads last year - not a great literary masterpiece (although there is a really good literary subplot/context within it) by was a genuine can’t-put-down suspenseful read. I say genuine because so many books have that as a tag line these days, but I found it had really good pace and suspense, even if it wasn’t all completely believable.

WordWhirls · 02/01/2022 15:17

I’m reading Three Hours by Rosamund Lupton at the moment, 20% in….ok so far

stiltonandcrackers · 02/01/2022 16:20

@CaptainChannel enjoy gentleman in Moscow. My favourite read of last year.

WeeFae · 02/01/2022 16:20

Did she also write Beartown?

Shinyandnew2022 · 02/01/2022 16:50

Yes @TheAnswerIsCake that's the one - great endorsement by you to kick start me !
@WordWhirls I hope it improves for you.
I will struggle to stick with it if it's a slow starter .

highlandcoo · 02/01/2022 17:30

I agree that Three Hours is a great book to get your reading mojo back, Shinyand New.

Once you've finished Three Hours, I recommend American Dirt as another page-turner for your next gripping read.

I think it's a bit like exercising after a long time of inactivity .. you have to build your stamina up again, and you need to choose something quite easy and that you really enjoy to start doing so. Like a dance class once a week rather than a 6am run on a wet morning Grin

So many people are talking about the issue of finding it difficult to put down their phones and pick up a book. It's obviously a huge thing.

I'm reading The Last Chronicle of Barset just now and that's requiring quite a lot of focus. But once I've read a few pages after I pick it up each day, I'm into it and away. Personally, I hate the Trending Now threads at the top of Mumsnet and my NY resolution is not to get sucked in!

StColumbofNavron · 02/01/2022 17:49

I’m going to ignore anyone reading A Gentleman in Moscow. I know we all like different things. I know that’s a good thing. But, as small part of my heart crumbles when someone doesn’t like it.

@StColumbofNavron me too! But I have not come across many who don't.

BaconAndAvocado · 02/01/2022 18:25

Me too!!

Got his new book The Lincoln Highway for Christmas. Can't wait to start it 😊

stiltonandcrackers · 02/01/2022 18:35

@BaconAndAvocado oooh will be interested to hear what you think. Have you read Rules of Civility? I enjoyed it. Was no comparison for Gentleman in Moscow though.

Grin I'm 100 pages in and so far enjoying it very much!

I know what you mean though. I feel like this if anyone tells me they didn't enjoy The Handmaid's Tale.

livingonpurpose · 02/01/2022 19:08

@Shinyandnew2022 I ready Three Hours in 2019 and loved it! Very suspenseful and enjoyable.

2. The Pull of the Stars - Emma Donoghue
Set over the course of three days, this is the story of a maternity nurse in a Dublin hospital during WWI as she looks after the expectant women who have been placed in quarantine as they have contracted a dangerous new flu. I raced through this book as it was so enjoyable to read - despite the annoying lack of speech marks which made it a little difficult sometimes to work out who was saying/thinking what.

Fridafever · 02/01/2022 19:18

Hi all, I’d love to join if that’s ok!

I’m starting with Piranesi by Susannah Clarke. I’m about a third in and loving it so far.

StColumbofNavron · 02/01/2022 21:00

I have put Rules of Civility on my Kindle spreadsheet.

BaconAndAvocado · 02/01/2022 21:32

stiltonandcrackers I loved The Rules of Civility.
Don’t think Amor Towles has a bad book in him (🤞🏻)

BaconAndAvocado · 02/01/2022 21:34

CaptainChannel totally with you re Handmaid’s Tale though not so much The Testaments!

WeeFae · 02/01/2022 21:36

@StColumbofNavron

I have put Rules of Civility on my Kindle spreadsheet.
You have a kindle spreadsheet! What are the categories, what does it track?
MargotMoon · 02/01/2022 21:48

I've just drawn up a diagram of all the different characters in The Casual Vacancy and how they relate to one another. I'm about a quarter in and keep forgetting who is who! This is one of those books where I'd like a character list to refer to at the beginning (like Jilly Cooper! Grin)
