Roll up, roll up ...

Shiny new thread for 2022.

I am setting my target at 25 this year.

I want to read at least a min of 5 in hardcopy and at least 4 non-fiction.

I'm currently reading and enjoying a non fiction book, so far I would recommend it. The Sleeping Beauties and other stories of mystery illness by Suzanne O'Sullivan.

I'm really struggling with focus ATM but used to read all the time so am trying to get back into it. I would be happy even if I managed just 12 books, so one a month

CleanQueen123 · 01/01/2022 09:03

I can I join please? I've signed up to the Agatha Christie reading challenge which is a book a month, so that's 12.

I'm currently reading Lady Hale's autobiography.

MargotMoon · 01/01/2022 09:11

Audiobooks definitely count! You make your own rules on this thread Smile

TheAnswerIsCake · 01/01/2022 09:44

@Manteo yes, we are! In West Kent, so have all the “superselective” nonsense to deal with too. I grew up here and, honestly, the school system is the only thing that has made me consider relocating. He’s got a good chance of passing, but we’ve not gone down the tutoring route, so we’ll see.

I’ve just set my Goodreads target to 52 - a book a week. We’ll have to see on that too!

I should also ban myself from the Kindle deals, but already been in there this morning. I have no self control where books are concerned.

livingonpurpose · 01/01/2022 10:07

I've set my Goodreads target to 50 again - although last year I made it to 73 (didn't put them all on the thread as the start of the year was mainly a load of crappy chick lit as I tried to restart my reading habit).

As I have about 220 unread books on my Kindle I am trying to be super selective about buying any more. I will keep checking the daily Kindle deals, but I'm trying to only buy if they're on my Wishlist. Unfortunately I do keep adding to that list as I get inspiration from these threads! With it being the 1st today, I checked the new deals and was pleased that I only found 3 books from my list discounted to 99p - so at least I don't feel too bad about buying those.

livingonpurpose · 01/01/2022 10:14

I'm starting the year off with The Heart's Invisible Furies which I am loving so far (about 50% of the way through).

My 'To Be Read in 2022' list is now 35 books long, as I compile it based on the best reads in 2021 thread and which of those books I already own or can borrow through the library app. Just looking at the list makes me feel excited about 2022 - I can't wait to read them!

I would also like to read the rest of the Strike novels this year (only read the first so far, but own a couple of others) but I'm hoping for a deal on book 2 as I find I begrudge paying full price for books now.

CleanQueen123 · 01/01/2022 10:40

@livingonpurpose I read The Heart's Invisible Furies last year and absolutely loved it.

CatAlice · 01/01/2022 11:13

May I join?
I used to easily read the 50 books challenge but have completely lost my reading mojo.
You would think that being ill for a long period, followed by 3 lockdowns would have made someone read more. In fact the opposite happened to me. I have kept a reading diary for about 18years Blush. It started when DS2 (now 23) was learning to read and was a reluctant reader so we both kept a reading list.

Last year I reckon I managed about 15 books.

I've gone through all the genres as favourites over the years (I'm 63) recently I normally read thrillers or crime but have gone off them. In fact I've gone off everything so this will be a real challenge and I'm unashamadly going to start with some gentle rom-com/chic lit.
My favourite writers of this genre are Katie Fforde and Jill Mansell but I've just discovered Jane Lovering. Twee titles but witty writing.

@livingonpurpose I loved A Heart's Invisible Furies. It was my book of the year in 2019.

@WordWhirls I'm with you on the giving up. If I'm not enjoying my current book I simply don't read. I used to feel obliged to finish a book but now I don't hesitate to give up because the alternative is no reading.

Runninghorse · 01/01/2022 12:06

Some great ideas here - I have downloaded the Goodreads App and have a list of 35 books on my “want to read” shelf - I have added The Hearts Invisible Furies as it seems to be popular here.Hopefully, I will finish Mythos (definitely recommend this plus Stephen Fry’s voice is very soothing) on Audible today or tomorrow and have downloaded The Thursday Murder Club as my next book. I am reading a hard copy of David Olusoga’s Black and British, which I recommend to anyone looking for a nonfiction book

WeeFae · 01/01/2022 12:14

Signing in, starting with a Norah Lofts historical saga.

CatAlice · 01/01/2022 12:52

@WeeFee Norah Lofts! I read all hers in my teens (early 70s) during my historical novel phase. I'd love to try one now.

MercuryRising · 01/01/2022 12:54

Hi. I would love to join you. My first book of the year will be Dave Grohl's autobiography The Storyteller. Hoping to finish reading it before I return to work on Tuesday.

WordWhirls · 01/01/2022 13:03

@CleanQueen123 is the Agatha Christie challenge on Goodreads?

CleanQueen123 · 01/01/2022 15:16

@WordWhirls it's on the Agatha Christie website: www.agathachristie.com/

You have to subscribe but I thought it looked good. I follow them on Facebook and they post some good content.

I've got most of her books so I thought this would give me a nudge to complete my collection and read a few more along the way.

Manteo
We're also in Kent and, as well as being a tutor myself, I've had 3 DCs go through the test so I feel your pain.

Heart's Invisible Furies was my favourite book of 2020.
Also LOVED All the Light we Cannot See.

LadyMacnet · 01/01/2022 17:00

Hello, I’d like to join too please. If I read 26 books this year I will be thrilled as I totally lost my reading mojo over the last 2 years of the pandemic. I used to be a fairly good reader but last year I think I only read about 4 books. I want to find that reading groove again.

First book for 2022 will be Where the Crawdads Sing which has been lurking on my to-read pile for too long.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 01/01/2022 17:01

Can I join. I'm trying to get out of my trashy tv habit but am much better at buying 99p kindle books than reading them.

WeeFae · 01/01/2022 18:01

I'm really enjoying them! Currently on the Suffolk House trilogy.

You'll love it!

I'm starting with The Missing Sister by Lucinda Riley - the last in the series.

livingonpurpose · 01/01/2022 20:56

1. The Heart's Invisible Furies - John Boyne
Wow! I'm so emotional right now having just finished this book. I loved it. It was funny, heart-breaking and just wonderful - what a great way to start the year off! Set in Ireland, the story covers the life of Cyril Avery a gay man who, after being adopted at birth, struggles to find love and acceptance. It also explores prejudice and bigotry and the influence of the Catholic Church. Without a doubt this is a book that will stay with me.

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 01/01/2022 21:40

I'm currently reading Singled Out: How Two Million Women Survived Without Men After the First World War by Virginia Nicholson. Only two chapters in, but it's fascinating!

That links in so well to A Single Thread by Tracy Chevalier, which I've just finished.

Violet lost her fiancé in WWI and the book tells of her trying to escape her domineering mother and create a new and meaningful life for herself as one of the "surplus women" as they were known at the time.

foxywheaton75 · 01/01/2022 22:16

Please could I join. Love to read and will be lovely to gain some recommendations from the thread. I was lucky enough to get some bookshop vouchers for Christmas, so looking forward to spending them.

user1493494961 · 01/01/2022 22:27

I'd also like to join and will aim for 25. I'm starting with the Thursday Murder Club but am taking note of recommendations.

greenfence · 02/01/2022 01:38

I would love to join too. I definitely spend too much time phaffing on my phone, which I want to stop. My genre of choice is usually spy/thriller/mystery but I am going to broaden my reading horizons in 2022. I'm going to aim for 26.
Starting off with - The Library Of Lost And Found by Phaedra Patrick.
