Meant to say I am liking The Testaments a lot just been too tired to keep my eyes open in the evenings to read it faster …

VittysCardigan · 30/01/2022 07:26

7.Dead Lions - Mick Herron
Second in the Slough House series. Enjoying this series about agents from MI5 that have made cock ups and been shunted off to Slough House to work. I think these books are being made into a tv series.

Divebar2021 · 30/01/2022 09:00

I’ve just finished 5 Small Pleasures by Clare Chambers. I stayed up til 01.00 just to get rid of it… so slow in parts ( and I like Japanese fiction so accustomed to nothing happening 😀) I found it all underwhelming. I’m not sure what to read next so I shall peruse my pile of books.

ExtremelyDetermined · 30/01/2022 09:04
  1. Freckles by Cecelia Ahern (book)
  2. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig (audio)
  3. The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri (audio)
  4. Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian (audio)
  5. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by JK Rowling (audio)
6 The Christmas Chronicles by Nigel Slater - this is a cookbook written in diary form. It starts on the 1st Nov and finishes on the 2nd Feb, I. have been on a read-along thread on MN. It is SUCH a lovely comforting read.

Hi everyone - sorry I’m late! I’ve loved this group for the past few years, although life got in the way last year and I dropped off. I must have been around about the 30 book mark but stopped counting.

I’m an English teacher so include books I read/re-read with classes as well as my own reading. I like to include audiobooks too.

So far this year I have read:

1 A Country Christmas by Veronica Henry
Picked this up as I fancied something light and fun over the Christmas period when I was knackered from work and busy. Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Was expecting something a bit twee and almost Miss Read ish but it was quite funny and racy. Would read her again.

  1. The Skylarks’ War by Hilary MacKay
Read this with my yr7 class. A really beautiful YA family saga. So well-written. I actually found myself crying whilst reading this aloud in class which is very unusual! Would recommend to anyone, not just teens, and will read the sequel.
  1. Still Life by Sarah Winman - audio
I liked this but didn’t love it as much as I expected to. Lots of friends absolutely raved about this and I did love the characters but thought it was a bit too long. I didn’t enjoy the London pub scenes as much as the Italy chapters and could have done without the ridiculous parrot!

Currently reading and enjoying The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow and listening to The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman.

Well I'm feeling delighted with life today because I finished book 2. The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling which I loved as well. I wanted to read at least two books a month so I'm on track Smile

Hoping to make it a hat trick, but can't decide what to go for next!

Here's my To Be Read shelf. What shall I go for? And what does yours look like?

Hungry has got great reviews on the 50 thread.

Well done on achieving your goal!

I don’t have a proper TBR because lots are dotted about and then I have a Kindle spreadsheet, but these are the recent purchases/book subscriptions that I have that haven’t found their proper home in the shelves yet.

MargotMoon the Kate Atkinson is fantastic!

BaconAndAvocado · 31/01/2022 14:28

StColumbofNavron I’ve only read The God of Small Things from your selection but I thought it was a wonderful book!

ExtremelyDetermined · 31/01/2022 16:09

I love the Kate Atkinson too, and The Shellseekers. I have the Grace Dent and The Casual Vacancy in my TBR pile (which is too big for one photo).

I think I read The God of Small Things many years ago but can't remember any detail.

MargotMoon · 31/01/2022 17:30

Whoops. Picture attached.

Oh yes I've got some TBRs on my Kindle too, forgot about them!
I should probably start The Shellseekers as it's a library book and it's massive...

I've read both Small Island and Natives from your list, and they are both brilliant. Is the Zadie Smith a play? It looks v small. I went to school with her so I'm pre-disposed to like anything she writes, especially when it's about where I spent my formative years Smile

dollybird · 31/01/2022 18:16

Just finished book 3. Fear the Worst by Linwood Barclay. This wasn't as good as his other books that I've read. A bit too long, and not as clever a storyline.

Now reading Radium Girls as recommended by someone on this thread.

StColumbofNavron · 31/01/2022 18:43

Yes @MargotMoon it’s The Wives of Willesden. Some friends got me an NT plays subscription for my birthday so I have a few.

What a lovely gift!

3. The Mercies - Kiran Millwood Hargrave

Can I join everyone in praising this book, based on the witch trials in Norway 1620, I loved it and it's going to join my small selection of books which I will reread again. The characters and description of the wild landscape were beautiful.

My next book will be The Good Wife by Elizabeth Buchan. Iv'e had this lying around for years and I want to get rid of it.

princessspotify · 02/02/2022 10:57

No 3. Paper Aeroplanes Dawn O'Porter.
I loved this book. It was such an easy read and bought back many memories of been a teenager at an all girls school.

princessspotify · 02/02/2022 10:59

Sorry No 4

pontiouspilates · 02/02/2022 19:09

I've just finished Book 4: Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge (audio) A powerful read that made me want to scream with frustration at how downright unfair our society is.

mrsfeatherbottom · 03/02/2022 10:04

I just ordered 4 books on Amazon with a voucher I got for my birthday, including The Mercies after reading about it on here.

Currently reading The Power of the Dog by Thomas Savage. (Film currently on Netflix with Benedict Cumberbatch)

I liked that book too and had the same reaction.

  1. The Girl With The Louding Voice - Abi Daré I really enjoyed this, listened on audible read by Adjoa Andoh.
SmaugMum · 04/02/2022 07:58
  1. The Appeal by Janice Hallet (I couldn’t wait to finish this book, in a grit-your-teeth-and-get-on-with-it way).
princessspotify · 04/02/2022 12:52

No 5. When I was ten by Fiona Cummins
I read this book in two days. I couldn't put it down. Story about two sister's with abusive parents. Lots of twists. Would highly recommend.

8. The Girl With The Louding Voice - Abi Daré I really enjoyed this, listened on audible read by Adjoa Andoh.
I’m going to read this soon for my book group and a friend really recommended I listen to it on audible. Heard great things about it.
