How many hours a day do you read?

SailYourShips · 12/08/2021 19:32

I have decided to try and read for an hour a day, even it means doing it early morning or late at night.

I have a stack of books at about 300pp, so it should mean that I'm reading 1 or even 2 a week, depending on the book and my TBR pile will start to reduce. There are over 50 on there.

How many hours a day/week do others read and are you religious about it?

I

Lately I have read between 1 and 2 hours of an evening. Can start about 9.30 and before I know it its 11.30.
It is a good book though

Ladyrattles · 12/08/2021 19:48

If it's an average book I read about 30-60 mins at bedtime. If it's a real page turner I can sometimes read 2+ hours. It's my favourite time of night and helps my brain shut off.

Odile13 · 12/08/2021 19:59

I usually read about an hour and a half a day before bed. I love it. It helps me unwind.

Before having a baby when I still commuted to work it was much more. I’d read on the train to work, in my lunch break, on the train home and two hours before bed!

Thehistorygirls · 12/08/2021 20:05

Approx an hour on weekdays - always before bed and usually for part of commute too. At weekends, probably 2 hours each day.

Standrewsschool · 12/08/2021 20:06

Between 30 minutes and an hour, at night just before I go to sleep.

user1471554720 · 12/08/2021 20:08

I read for an hour most evenings. I start reading after 9 o'clock news and continue til bed time. I often can't find anything good to watch on tv. I find a book satisfying instead of flicking channels.

GreenGordon · 12/08/2021 20:09

An hour in bed of a morning with a cup of tea, and 2-3 hours in the evening before going to bed. If I read in bed before sleep I usually read 2-3 pages and then wake up when the book hits the floor!

Maggiesgirl · 12/08/2021 20:24

I cheat, I use audio books, so can ' read' up to 6 hours a day if its a good book. Usually while I am doing boring things like housework, but also if im knitting or crafting.

JaninaDuszejko · 12/08/2021 22:25

It varies. Some days 10 minutes before I fall asleep while kicking myself for spending ages on my phone, some days hours and hours.

yoshiblue · 12/08/2021 22:32

30-60 mins per day after dinner, children are in bed. If I waited until my bedtime I'd be asleep after two pages!

I try to follow the advice of reading 20 pages per day before putting evening tv on. Often I'll continue beyond that.

Xmasbaby11 · 12/08/2021 23:22

at the moment, at least an hour, which I am really pleased with around work and kids.

Morning over breakfast: 15 mins
Lunchtime most days (if on own) 15 mins
Bedtime: 30 mins, sometimes more

I've read so many good books this year - I think I've got the hang of getting kindle deals for authors that I like, so I always have the next book lined up. I'm buying more books than I used to and using the library less, but really enjoying reading!

Then I try to snatch 10 mins here and there, when I'm cooking, or kids in a swimming lesson, etc

SailYourShips · 13/08/2021 10:33

It seems as if reading an hour is perfectly do-able and I'm going to at least try it.

If I can't I'm going to stop buying books and going to the library as I just add and add to my TBR and one day I'll be found buried beneath it.

I'm a teacher so weekdays in term time I read when I get into bed and stop when I can't keep my eyes open anymore. This can be anything from 5 minutes to an hour!!

Weekends and school holidays - usually, around an hour a day.

Buggerthebotox · 13/08/2021 12:49

Depends what's on telly. If nothing good on, 2 hours per night. Weekends more. I always try to have a good book on the go.

NotWanting · 13/08/2021 12:52

I can't see well enough to read anymore so switched to audio books. I tend to listen between 0 and 8 hours a day.

I'll listen in the shower, car, cleaning, cooking and in bed. Love it. I read about 2 books a week.

Apeirogon · 13/08/2021 12:55

I read every night before I fall asleep. Usually for about half an hour, sometimes less (if I'm tired) or more (if I'm really into my book).

Also take a book with me to appointments when I may have to wait (dentist, hairdresser etc) or when waiting to pick the DC up from an activity.

Plus audiobooks in the car.

TheHoneyFactory · 13/08/2021 13:03

1-2 hours of pleasure reading a day. 1-2 for study. mainly read in bed before sleep and a little bit throughout the day (school pick up wait). I only borrow books (ebooks and physical) from the library (wannabe minimalist) but find the 21 days borrow time means ill actually finish them than just pile up if I were to buy.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 14/08/2021 18:42

I gave up trying to find time to read. There was always someone interrupting me. So I switched to audio books. I have listened to over 100 since jan.

SquirryTheSquirrel · 14/08/2021 18:44

If it's a book I'm gripped with, hours - until I finish it basically, although I usually intersperse reading with other necessary tasks. If I'm not at work I sometimes read on and off all day.

Freefalling22 · 15/08/2021 09:09

On average, about an hour. But varies massively. I have two young children and I have a health condition so depends on energy levels and how good the book is. Somedays I'm lucky to manage a couple of pages, somedays I can read for hours. If I'm loving a book, I'll often stay up until the small hours reading.

frozendaisy · 19/08/2021 17:39

If the rest of the house want to watch TV that I have seen or have no interest in I will read with side light in corner of room so can be hour half/2 hours and then take book to bed.

Depends largely on book to be honest.

languagelover96 · 20/08/2021 09:07

Up to a hour most days. I only started a new book last night- not far in and not impressed so far but will keep at it over the weekend and report back next Friday. Like PP said, it depends on the type of book etc largely.

StColumbofNavron · 21/08/2021 16:52

Between 1-2 hours. I read over breakfast, usually my Kindle because I fell asleep part way through a chapter and I hate leaving a chapter unfinished.

A bit around lunch.

Often, have an hour post dinner.

Then in bed.

onemouseplace · 21/08/2021 16:56

About an hour, more on weekends. I tend to read for 30 mins or so whilst DH is doing dinner, then another 30 mins before bed.

I’m trying to read more and pick up my book whenever I have a spare moment instead of my phone. The most I ever read was when I commuted, I really miss it.

SailYourShips · 22/08/2021 17:42

Inspired by you all, I have read for an hour a day most days since I posted.

It is mostly do-able and I feel better for it.
