Please recommend me something similar. I laughed out loud more than I can remember..

I've read some of her other books but didn't enjoy them as much.

What did you like about them? That might help with recommendations. Was it the humour? The cast of supporting characters, eg Janice and Martin? The fact that Becky is flawed but fundamentally a kind person?

I thought that the books went off a bit after she had the baby, and by the time they were doing the US road trip she had jumped the shark.

smallstepsonly · 27/07/2021 13:02

All of that.. the humour and how she was flawed but a kind person. They did get a bit ridiculous but the first few were great and helped me when I was laid up in bed after a traumatic illnesss/ surgery

Ive tried reading lots of books since but nothing has gripped me really. I also like thrillers/ mysteries/ crime drama

Trying to reignite my passion for reading but I have two little ones and I'm exhausted I just sit in front of the tv once they are asleep but would prefer to read.

Marian Keyes! Sushi for Beginners, Rachel’s Holiday, This Charming Man... don’t like the ones about woo and angels though.

smallstepsonly · 27/07/2021 13:15

I didn't take to Marian Keyes but maybe need to try them again

The I Heart series of books were great. I like easy to read escapism books like Mhari McFarlane, Sophie Ranauld etc

MagentaRocks · 27/07/2021 13:29

Sophie kinsella has also written books under the name Madeleine wickham. Might be worth giving them a go.

Iamthewombat · 27/07/2021 13:30

Lucy Talk by Fiona Walker has the same whimsical quality, funny supporting cast and likeable heroine.

I tried one of those I heart books once: picked it up from a hotel book exchange shelf. It was terrible: no humour or finesse, could have been written by a 15 year old. You have to choose carefully with stuff categorised as chick lit, because so much of it is crummy.

Iamthewombat · 27/07/2021 13:31

I assume that you have read the Bridget Jones books? They pretty much defined the genre and are unsurpassed.

Bells3032 · 27/07/2021 13:33

Jane Costello is also fabulous and a similar style and Kathy Lette's books esp how to kill your husband and to love, honour and betray

Bells3032 · 27/07/2021 13:35

oh Anna Bell and Caitlin McKenna aren't quite a good as Costello but still worth a read :)

Iamthewombat · 27/07/2021 13:36

You will need a high tolerance for bad puns if you are going to read Kathy Lette books.

Actually, I wouldn’t call her books escapist or cheery, if that is what you are looking for. They are a bit bleak in the sense that the women in them get quite a raw deal from the men in their lives!

Cosybelles · 27/07/2021 13:42

Have you read Can You Keep A Secret, also by Sophie Kinsella? It's the best non-shopaholic one I think!

Imcatmum · 27/07/2021 13:43

Bridget Jones and Marian Keyes

buckleten · 27/07/2021 13:46

The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella is one of my all time favourite books! I love Bridget Jones too, and most of Bill Bryson's books - notes from a small island made me actually wet myself once!

TheFairyCaravan · 27/07/2021 13:46

I like Jill Mansell books for an easy read.

mooloop · 27/07/2021 13:47

Lindsey Kelk's books are a similar vibe and I enjoy them Smile

I just read the Single Girl's To-Do List (despite being happily married myself Grin) and although some bits were a bit daft, I really liked it!

yellowspot · 27/07/2021 13:48

@TheFairyCaravan

I like Jill Mansell books for an easy read.
I love a Jill mansell for a mushy read to escape a bad day!
PercyPigandMe · 27/07/2021 13:49

Oh you need Catherine alliott - the first two . The old girls network and then the next one which escapes me for now.

Just what you'll enjoy if you liked the first shopaholics.

Fankehxudb · 27/07/2021 13:50

Also a fan of the Shopholic series here! On my Kindle are Jane Green books (Jemima J) also Chris Mamby (Flatmates, Ready or Not? A proper family holiday, what I did on my holidays, A proper family adventure). Also some of Sophia Kinsella's books where she writes as Madeleine Wickham.

squiglet111 · 27/07/2021 13:50

Fiona walker is one of my fav authors. I've read quite a few of her books (some several times) and have loved them all. French relations is good to start with.

WhatsErFace2020 · 27/07/2021 13:53

Second @buckleten with the undomestic goddess!! Love that!

Marian Keyes also Fab, especially the Walsh Family series.

The Sweatpea books are also hilarious if you like flawed characters, anyone I’ve recommended them to loves them. It’s a very different read

Mummywantsaweewee · 27/07/2021 13:54

I’m currently re reading the Confessions of a Shopoholic series, currently on the one where she goes to Hollywood and tries to make it as a stylist.
Other pp’s have made good suggestions, I genuinely can’t remember what else is on my bookshelf haha but I also like Carmen Reid (she has a series about a personal shopper too)
Oh and I absolutely love love Adele Parks. I’ve got quite a few of her books, think she’s brilliant. In particular, “playing away” and “young wives tales” link to each other, same characters, but she has lots of titles worth reading!
Jane green is also a lovely author. One of my favourites is Jemima J.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 27/07/2021 13:55

Jane Fallon, particularly Getting Rid Of Matthew.

lovelylemonylolly · 27/07/2021 14:02

I was about to write Jane Fallon too!
