I missed most of it, but Armistead Maupin was on Desert Island Discs this morning - will listen again !

heard most of it

Had several of my favourite songs- Desperado and Moon River particularly.

I knew that I would like him! Grr at my husband who came into the utility room as I was ironing and put the washing machine on!

MaryAnnSingleBeaker · 25/11/2007 12:57

he also had Hallelujah which I love - hadn't heard the kd lang version though...

tissy · 25/11/2007 13:00

oh, yes heard a bit of that one between spins!

MaryAnnSingleBeaker · 25/11/2007 13:04

dh hates that song, for some reason

Blandmum · 25/11/2007 13:25

Ok buuger. I must listen again as I do my marking

MaryAnnSingleBeaker · 25/11/2007 17:58

dang...they don't do it on listen again it seems - will try to remember to listen to repeat on Friday

Vulgar · 25/11/2007 18:04

I couldn't hear bits because of general family noise around me . . what was the thing about the 14 year old boy? . . with HIV ?. . .it sounded really intreging.

don't think I will be around to hear it again on Friday.

Damn!

MaryAnnSingleBeaker · 25/11/2007 18:12

it was a hoax that AM got caught up in and which he based his book The Night Listener on...some woman was pretending to be her son who was supposedly dying

noyummymummy · 25/11/2007 18:38

What time is it on again? Friday am or pm? Love Armistead... tales of the city books are dyno-mite.

MaryAnnSingleBeaker · 25/11/2007 19:41

Friday morning - 9am

Vulgar · 25/11/2007 19:45

Thanks MaryAnn.

i thought of you when Desert island discs came on and wondered if you were listening.

i love "Hallelujah too" Great song.

ScottishMummy · 25/11/2007 19:56

it was brilliant

MerryAnnSinglemas · 30/11/2007 10:25

AAARRGHH - I am so stupid - I completely forgot the repeat was on this morning - was too busy putting the washing on - damn, damn, damn

Thanks MaryanSingleBeaker, I missed the first 15 minutes but caught the last 30 min or so. Great stuff- He sounds like a lovely man and I loved the music. The last book I read by him was the Night Listener and the Tales books of course - can anyone recommend anything else by him?

Hassled · 30/11/2007 10:58

I was tipped of by a friend and heard it Sunday morning - the bit about his 90 year old conservative father saying "Look after my boy" to AM's partner made me well up a bit. AM just sounded such a thoroughly nice guy.

MerryAnnSinglemas · 30/11/2007 11:13

me too, I did hear that bit about his dad ...
the only other thing I can think of is 'Maybe the Moon', which I didn't like as much as the Tales of The City series

Hi Noyummymummy,
Have you read "Michael Tolliver Lives." it's his latest & revisits his most autobiographical character from the Tales series. Its like meeting an old friend & remembering why you liked them so much.
I also loved the Desert Island Discs. My mum tipped me off as I'd bought her "Maybe the Moon" after she'd beenan extra in the Borrowers. She thought his choice of music soooo typical!

Tinker · 30/11/2007 19:41

Oh, I heard this and always miss DID. He was very interesting though, liked him.

Tinker · 30/11/2007 19:41

Hallelujah must be one of the most covered songs; nice pension for old Len

PanTheBruce · 30/11/2007 19:43

Bugger! Missed it twice now!! Did read his song list...EVERY archy-typal gay icon in there!!

Blandmum · 30/11/2007 19:55

Caught most of it while taking dh to hospital for a scan today. He was great.

MIL heard it while driving down to stay with us and is now asking to borrow my 'Tales of the City' books

Blandmum · 30/11/2007 19:56

KD Lang's version of hallelulia, while good, wasn;'t the best IMHO (and I quite like her as a singer)

I've been reading him for years, well over 10 years at ant rate. My tales of the City book was publised in 1991!

midnightexpress · 30/11/2007 20:23

PantheBruce, he did apologise for picking Liza Minnelli, in his defence .

noyummymummy, what's The Night Listener like? It sounded very intriguing.
