I've seen Elly Griffiths recommended on MN several times, so I picked up The Chalk Pit the other day. I do think she writes well, and am enjoying her dry humour, but baffled by logistics! The police officers are based in King's Lynn, but they're investigating incidents in Norwich, and seem to be travelling between the two locations in no time at all - which anyone who has spent time in North Norfolk, or even looked at a map, would know is impossible unless by helicopter. Example: two officers are in Norwich getting information, a colleague in KL police station wonders aloud "what's taking them so long" - well, it'll be the hour, minimum, each way on the A47, for a start!

Could it really be feasible that Norwich wouldn't have its own CID department to cover local cases? The author says she spends lots of holidays on the Norfolk coast so she must know how long it takes to get around.

More on The Last Remains, Ruth 15:

The unmissable new book in the Dr Ruth Galloway Mysteries. Ruth and Nelson are working on a murder case in which Cathbad emerges as the prime suspect. Can they uncover the truth in time to save their friend?

When builders renovating a café in King's Lynn find a human skeleton in the wall, they immediately call for DCI Harry Nelson and Dr Ruth Galloway, Head of Archaeology at the nearby University of North Norfolk. Ruth is preoccupied with the possible closure of her department and by the fact that Nelson and his wife are now living separately. Nevertheless she agrees to take on the case.

She sees immediately that the bones are modern and they are soon identified as the remains of Katherine Sands, who went missing in the 1990s. Katherine attended a spiritual well-being course and suspicion falls on the leader of the course - Ruth's friend, Cathbad.

The Police start to investigate the group and find that there are other missing women, making matters even worse for Cathbad. The trail leads Nelson to the famous Neolithic flint mines in Grimes Graves and to an archaeology group. Ruth agrees to infiltrate the group and there meets a figure from her own past. Soon the race is on to exonerate Cathbad, but will Ruth and Nelson uncover the truth in time to save their friend?

Just about to start reading the Locked Room! (I know I'm behind.)

QuebecBagnet · 03/08/2022 06:51

I’ve just started reading Broadland which is another detective series set in Norfolk, seems really good so far.

Brody77 · 04/08/2022 08:44

Gosh me too, grew up nearby grimes graves and visited so many times, went back for the first time in years, last month and took our dd and she loved it.
@QuebecBagnet sounds good will have to look for it

Another writer who sets his work in East Anglia is Jim Kelly - there is a series featuring a journalist starting with The Water Clock, another featuring a police detective duo and 3 (at least) in a historical series (set WWII) - have read at least 4 or 5 books in both the first two series but I'm not totally up to date, and still have to start the third series.

Maybe when I've finished The Locked Room - just started this morning. It's only February and most characters don't know what's coming yet. Ruth is helping to clear out her childhood home as, a few years after her mum's death, her dad has just remarried and there are renovation/redecoration plans afoot. And there is a school reunion, with Ruth learning how others saw her and this was different from what she thought. Which is strange as I've just been reading Bleeding Heart Yard which also features a reunion.

Just finished The Locked Room - I'd waited for the pb to come out. Read it v fast and enjoyed very much; so now I'll have a year to wait for The Last Remains in paperback, I guess. From the two publisher's synopses posted earlier, seems like the name of the woman whose skeleton is found at the start of the novel was changed.

News from Elly:
It’s been a busy month finishing up my first draft of The Last Remains and watching The Locked Room fly in paperback. We’ve just heard that it’s in the Sunday Times bestseller charts for a third week which is wonderful news – thanks so much to everyone who has bought a copy.
When I announced that The Last Remains will be the ending of the Dr Ruth Galloway series (for now) I said that there would still be lots of exciting things to come, more Ruth stories to be told and a year of Ruth celebrations. I’m pleased to share that this is all going to kick off with a special edition of The Crossing Places which is coming on 20th October.
We’ve got a beautiful new cover and some brand new, never-before-seen content exclusive to this edition (to be announced at a later date).
The folks at Jarrold in Norwich have supported me for such a long time, so it was only right to announce this edition with a special competition. Anyone who pre-orders a copy of The Crossing Places from Jarrold can upload proof of their purchase to be in with a chance of winning an exclusive early copy of The Last Remains and two tickets to the launch event with Jarrold on 2nd February 2023.
That means you’ll get to read the ending for Ruth and Nelson and Cathbad before anyone else!
All my best,
Elly

I love Ruth Galloway and having never been to Norfolk I booked a trip this year just so I could visit some of those places!
I have tried a few of Elly Griffiths other books and couldn't get into them.

Following on from The Last Remains this coming February in hardback, the paperback edition will be published in August 2023.

LampLass · 15/01/2023 10:15

I bought a paperback version of the Locked Room for £2.50 from the Works over xmas as I read a library version before and fancied a re-read- anyway, it has the first 2 chapters of the Last Remains at the back! So I was very excited to get a glimpse into the final book, even if it didn't reveal more than the synopsis below! Exciting!

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 15/01/2023 18:53

I’ve requested The Last Remains from my local library, currently 104th in the queue, might get to read it before it comes out in paperback!

SaltMarsh · 31/01/2023 19:01

My copy of The Last Remains arrived today. I don't usually get new books so quickly, but had a voucher to spend and couldn't resist ordering it. I'm just about to finish Noel Fitzpatrick's latest, Beyond Supervet - very good, interesting, thought-provoking and moving - and then I'll start it.

I feel quite reluctant to start it, it being the last one.

Here is another thread I have just found about Elly and Ruth:

cheshirecatssmile · 11/02/2023 10:04

Just finished the last remains
Won't spoil it but what a cliff hanger

shinynewapple22 · 11/02/2023 17:26

Me too. I wouldn't normally pay that much for a book but I pre-ordered when I came to the end of the rest of the series last year.

No spoilers but just to say I enjoyed the ending .

Toddlerteaplease · 02/03/2023 23:13

Really enjoyed The Last Remains. Though IRL none of them would be on the case as they are all partial. That did irritate be a bit.
