Books that make you feel

Has anyone read anything recently that has really made them think / feel? I really love big gut punches of books. Absolutely adored Grief is the thing with feathers by Max Porter and Boys don't Cry by Fíona Scarlett. Books I thought about for days afterwards.

Any recommendations like this would be fab and if you haven't read the above I highly highly recommend ( as long as you're emotionally stable )

Not quite the same genre I suspect but one book that will always stay with me is The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. I found it on a book shelf in a hostel 12 years ago and still think about it.

Oh wow sounds great and the reviews are fab! Never would have come across it at all, thank you

The Midnight Library really moved me.

anormalperson · 13/05/2021 07:30

Thanks! Would much rather read from recommendations like this that what the book shops are pushing. I've been disappointed way too many times recently by books that are everywhere and promise to be brilliant

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.

The Kite Runner and a Thousand Golden Suns by Khaled Hosseini

Acrasia · 13/05/2021 14:32

Betty by Tiffany McDaniel. Just heartbreakingly beautiful.

@Disfordarkchocolate

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.
Ooh yes - agreed!
housecoat1968 · 13/05/2021 14:39

@Lunaballoon

Yep, I opened the thread to say this one! It was brilliant

My wish list is growing by the minute. I really recommend Boys Don't Cry , absolutely heartbreaking but how the author makes you empathise with every single character is incredible!

The Secret Children by Alison McQueen.
Heartbreaking.

Standrewsschool · 13/05/2021 20:11

The Push - forgotten the author, about a mother and (lack of) bond with her daughter.

beccahamlet · 17/05/2021 04:08

The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint. I found it very moving.

pixiedust21 · 18/05/2021 22:38

The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne

Circe by Madeline Miller

garlictwist · 19/05/2021 06:30

I really enjoyed H is for Hawk. It's quite a strange book about a woman who trains a gos hawk to come to terms with grief. I read it a few years ago and it's really stayed with me.

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 19/05/2021 13:32

The flower girls made me feel a bit huh for a few days after. Felt like I had to talk to someone about it

Sheerheight · 19/05/2021 13:38

The Midnight Library as mentioned upthread.

Also The Salt Path, a non fiction book. I bought it on a whim without knowing what it was about but it was really good in the same way as H is for Hawk.

Willdoitlater · 19/05/2021 13:53

The Puzzle Solver by Tracie White

You might like Max Porter's second novel Lanny, which is about a missing child in a village.
