Every time I say to myself I'll just read the Dramatis Thingummy and maybe the first chapter. And every time I'm still reading at 3am...

Mine has been in order since last July!

RustyBear · 14/04/2021 23:41

Mine too! I've been doing a re-read in preparation.

Noooooo. Fingers in my ears. I have only just found them. I’m listening to them on audible and they are just totally amazing. Only on book five !!!!! So many fab ones left to read.

ValerieMorghulis · 16/04/2021 10:03

Would a well-read 15yo who likes epic style books but also time travel like these? Are they a good continuing story you can get your teeth into? I’m looking for something to recommend to her and keep seeing these mentioned but only really on here!

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 16/04/2021 11:03

Ummm. They are funny. But people die. It’s a continuing story all the way through the books but little stories in each one ( if that makes sense ). There are some heavy sex scenes in them though. Which to me ruin the books. But hey. But they are very full on. But the best books ever.

FelicityBeedle · 16/04/2021 14:35

I think a 15 year ole could enjoy, they’re quite light quick reading imo but very enjoyable if you can suspend your disbelief! They might also like the Rivers of London series

ValerieMorghulis · 16/04/2021 15:28

Thank you both - that’s helpful. She probably won’t appreciate sex scenes so I might get one and have a look before recommending them!

FelicityBeedle · 17/04/2021 03:04

Well I’m about 1/4 of the way through and desperately speculating if they’re both gone for good

nocoolnamesleft · 18/04/2021 02:34

Interesting. Not what I was expecting. Not my favourite, but not bad. Really very interested to see how it goes from here into the next book(s).

Mypathtriedtokillme · 18/04/2021 12:52

I’m making myself finish the book I’m currently reading before I start this one because then school and preschool will be back from holidays (Aus) and I’ll have child free reading time.

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 18/04/2021 14:30

Finished yesterday. Loved it as per. Am sad she's only doing one a year now as she's Time Policing the other half of the year. Don't get me wrong, I like those bastards at the Time Police but St Mary's is obviously the true home for all right thinking time travellers... sorry, people who investigate historical events in contemporary time.

mimbleandlittlemy · 22/04/2021 17:00

I thought it wasn't one of the best. Knew that there was no way on God's good earth she would have permanently removed one particular character (trying to avoid spoilers) and I liked some of the darker books. Wish Leon wasn't being rather sidelined IMHO. However, thought the last few words bode well for perhaps some darker books coming up.

Anyone else get confused jumping between the Time Police books and back to St Mary's?

Anyone read the supernatural thrillers? I don't think I can stomach the books about the imaginary horse.

nocoolnamesleft · 22/04/2021 17:06

I was reading it wracking my brains as to which characters featured in the jumps from the time police back to St Mary's, slightly in the future. I think she's at risk of self spoilering.

Chrestomanci3 · 22/04/2021 17:11

I'd forgotten I had pre-ordered it, until it turned up on my kindle. Love the Chronicles of St Mary's books. Has anyone read the book she wrote as Isabella Barclay? It's a kind of Georgette Heyer-style regency romance, A Bachelor Establishment.

Re-read the penultimate paragraph - I think it's the key to the self-spoiler thing...

@mimbleandlittlemy - the ones about the imaginary horse are actually not as faery-like as they sound, but it's difficult to explain without spoilers.

mimbleandlittlemy · 22/04/2021 17:48

There's one of the imaginary horse short stories in the short story compilations. I might take some convincing Rusty, but I never say never.

Just having a small emotional moment - from one of the short stories when Edward says to Leon "She's here." Ohhhh.

nocoolnamesleft · 22/04/2021 20:03

Though the thing that really irritates me, going back a couple of books, is I'm almost sure the teddy bear originally had cross stitched eyes, not hard ones...

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 22/04/2021 20:49

I love her Elizabeth cage series. Have the third one of those on pre order.

Not tried the time police books. But I’m on book ten of at Mary’s now on audible.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 22/04/2021 22:27

The ones with the imaginary horse are actually quite lovely.
