These are my favourite books and authors - can you recommend something good for me?

I keep buying mediocre books and really want a good one to listen to whilst I sort out my loft today.

I like thrillers and more general "domestic" fiction. Favourite authors (although I've read all their books now, hence looking for a new recommendation):

Lisa Jewell
Alex Marwood
Jo Spain
Marian Keyes

Favourite recent books:
The Making of Us
Eleanor Oliphant
The Rosie Project
Where the Crawdads Sing
The Hate U Give

Any suggestions?

Have you tried any Dawn O'Porter? I liked The Cows.

Or Liane Moriarty?

gingercatsarebest · 19/02/2021 14:44

Rosamund Lupton especially "three hours"
jane harper. .especially "the lost man"
Catherine ryan Howard. esp "the nothing man"

joeysapple · 19/02/2021 15:53

@BookHook great suggestion on Dawn O'Porter - I also loved The Cows!

Unfortunately I couldn't get on with Liane Moriarty. No idea why, but I might try a different book of hers and see if I just picked a dud last time.

@gingercatsarebest thank you - will take a look at those.

My sort of books. I enjoyed Shari Low.

Have you read any Lucinda Reiley? I rely enjoyed the Seven Sisters series.

rookiemere · 19/02/2021 16:12

Similar sort of reading preferences and I absolutely loved The Queens Gambit by Walter Tevis - even better if you watch the series on netflix first. Or The Thursday Murder club is not quite as good as the hype would have you believe, but it is an easy read.

joeysapple · 19/02/2021 18:46

Thanks for all the recommendations - a few to add to my wish list now.

@rookiemere totally agree about the Thursday Murder Club. It's a perfectly ok book but not quite enough of a page turner for me.

I've not read anything by Alex Marwood or Jo Spain, but it looks like we have similar tastes OP, so I'm going to buy one by each. Which ones would you recommend ?

KindKylie · 19/02/2021 18:52

Celeste Ng - Little Fires Everywhere

There's a new Lisa Jewell out I think

The Other Half of August Hope and A Man Caled Ove are similar to Eleanor Oliphant

Wineandshine · 19/02/2021 19:13

Daisy Jones and the Six, The Nightingale and Scrublands are all ace!

Standrewsschool · 19/02/2021 19:14

The unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

Bridget Jones diaries - worth reading even if you have seen the films

Seven Sisters - Lucinda Riley - I agree, this is a good series

The Chronicles of St Mary’s - entertaining book

Tianatiers · 19/02/2021 19:16

I also recommend The Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley, the last of which is coming out in May this year, can't wait!!

Also you'd probably like The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, very similar vibe to Eleanor Oliphant I thought.

Itsmemaggie · 19/02/2021 19:27

I have similar taste and have recently enjoyed

‘The map of Us’ by Jules Preston

‘My grandmother sends her regards and apologises’ by Fredrick Backman

‘The seven deaths of Evelyn Hard castle’ by Stuart Turton.

KindKylie · 19/02/2021 19:47

I found The Seven Deaths almost impenetrable and finished because I'm stubborn, not because I wanted to Grin

joeysapple · 19/02/2021 20:42

@rookiemere for Alex Marwood I'd go for the Wicked Girls. Jo Spain - The Confession.
Hope you enjoy!

So many recommendations here, I'll be busy for a while! Thank you all Grin

Agreed about Liane Moriarty, I think some are definitely better than others. She seems to change her style and there's nothing wrong with that, it just means that you aren't necessarily going to read what you think you'll get Smile

GetHappy · 20/02/2021 19:27

As with other posters ... try Lianne Moriaty.

How about Jojo Moyes too?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/02/2021 19:29

The 2 Taylor Jenkins Reids
Daisy Jones and The Six and The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo

buckeejit · 20/02/2021 19:42

Sarah Waters is fab & ALL the Irish ladies
Sally Rooney
Maggie O'Farrell
Louise O'Neill
Anna Burns

The hearts invisible furies by John Boyne is great. I've just started American Dirt & it's really great

NEE1302 · 20/02/2021 20:08

Have you tried anything by Kate Furnivall or Lisa See?

joeysapple · 20/02/2021 20:12

Ooh thanks for the new recommendations.

I've just started one of the Seven Sisters books (The Pearl Sister) and I'm really enjoying it so far. I've also downloaded Three Hours and then I'll start working through the other recommendations.

Thank you all Smile

I've read all 4 of Alex Marwood's books - really good stories and i wish that she would get on a publish another.

Her Amazon page includes a section on "Customers also bought items by..." and list some authors, including Mark Edwards.
Have you read any of his?

If not - I would recommend that you try The Magpies.

joeysapple · 20/02/2021 23:42

@rosegoldwatcher thanks for the tip. I have read some Mark Edwards. I enjoyed The Lucky Ones and but found both The House Guest and Here To Stay disappointing so haven't tried any more of his since. I'll take a look at the Magpies though, thank you.

Just coming back to update!

Seven Sisters - The Pearl Sister I really enjoyed. Less keen on The Storm Sister so far and have abandoned it for a while. It's fine but it's not particularly gripping me and leaving me looking forward to getting back to it.

Three Hours I also downloaded but I think the subject matter (gunman in a school) is a bit heavy for me at the moment so I might come back to this after lockdown is done when I'm feeling a bit more mentally resilient.

The Midnight Library is brilliant so far. Downloaded it yesterday and am about halfway through.

If you like thrillers then give BA Paris a try.

I like Lucinda Riley the Seven sisters series and Liane Moriarty.

My favourite authors though for Thrillers are Linwood Barclay and Harlan Coben.
