These are my favourite books and authors - can you recommend something good for me?

I keep buying mediocre books and really want a good one to listen to whilst I sort out my loft today.

I like thrillers and more general "domestic" fiction. Favourite authors (although I've read all their books now, hence looking for a new recommendation):

Lisa Jewell
Alex Marwood
Jo Spain
Marian Keyes

Favourite recent books:
The Making of Us
Eleanor Oliphant
The Rosie Project
Where the Crawdads Sing
The Hate U Give

Any suggestions?

Jo Spain’s Dirty Little Secrets and Six Wicked Reasons.

Celeste Ng. Everything I Never Told You.

The Other Half of Augusta Hope.

Lucy Foley. The Guest List.

LApprentiSorcier · 14/03/2021 13:47

Louise Candlish
Tammy Cohen

(Both are good writers of psychological thrillers in my opinion).

StellaAndCrow · 14/03/2021 14:18

OP, I've just finished Three Hours, and strangely didn't find it heavy at all despite the subject matter - it was more about the stories of people in the school, and I found it quite uplifting.

I have a random recommendation, based on you having liked The Hate U Give - The Burning, by Laura Bates.

StellaAndCrow · 14/03/2021 14:21

To add, about The Burning, it has a strong "women and girls fight back" message.

AndreaMarteau · 15/03/2021 11:33

I haven't heard of Jo Spain but I like the other authors you've mentioned. Try Claire MacGowan. I've just read a couple of hers, they're twisty-turny, but even if you guess one of the twists, I found I wanted to keep reading to see how it turned out.

And one of the characters in her book The Other Wife was awful really, but I found myself rooting for her. I like that sort of stuff.

joeysapple · 15/03/2021 13:07

@AndreaMarteau that's a good shout! I thought The Other Wife was ok and really liked What You Did.

I've just had a look on Goodreads and her Paula Maguire series seems to have good ratings so I'll add to my list Smile

If you like Alex marwood then Dorothy Koomson books might fit the bill

Papergirl1968 · 02/04/2021 23:25

Similar taste here too.
I'm just finishing Lucinda Riley's The Olive Tree.
Can also recommend Rowan Coleman, Martina Reilly, and Kerry Fisher.
Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain, although American, are two of my favourite authors.

Papergirl1968 · 02/04/2021 23:26

Oh and Patrician Scanlan, Sheila O' Flanagan and Cathy Kelly, all Irish authors.

Cocolapew · 02/04/2021 23:27

Claire McGowans Paula Maguire series is much much better than her stand alone ones
Cara Hunter is very good too.

Sign up to your local library online - even if you are not a member you can sign up for that online at any time - and you can borrow books as often as you want. It'll save you a fortune and it means you can try books and send them back five minutes later if you don't like them.

stayathomer · 02/04/2021 23:32

Gillian McAllister, B A Paris, Louise Jensen, Steve Cavanagh, Jane Harper (thrillers) Women's fiction/Marian Keyes type books I like Jane Linfoot and Ellen Berry, B R Maycock and Rebecca Pugh. Hope you enjoy!

Boy swallows universe by Trent Dalton
The Island of sea women Lisa See
Little fires everywhere Celeste Ng

I was going to suggest joining a library and seeing what they have in their ebook collection.

I'm in London - each borough has its own library system - I still miss being in a large city (though not as large as London) which has one library service for the city as I feel that Leeds and Manchester were able to have better collections and extras avaiable to all users. But yes, I believe you can join any library service and possibly more than one area's system for audio books, as you don't have to worry about travelling to borrow, collect and return things. Others here will probably have more idea about the pchoreseracticalities of borrowing audio books.

If you need something again for entertainment while doing loft clearance and similar chores, you could check out Radio 4/Radio 4 extra's online offerings via "Sounds" and the associated podcasts. Lots of drama serials, book adapations, discussions of new books etc coming out or old favourites, and a big archive for some book programmes like A Good Read and Bookclub. Also World Bookclub from the World Service with a more international audience and some selections from other countries.

Alex Marwood is a pseudonym for Serena Mackesy. I don't know about the availability of her older work in audio form.

Ciara Geraghty writes in the Marian Keyes vein, though not quite as funny I've enjoyed the two books I've read by her.

I agree about Three Hours. It’s not a heavy book and worth reading. Good choice for anyone wanting a Bookclub book as it has a lot you can discuss.

Really glad I found this thread, I'd just finished Eleanor oliphant and was looking for inspiration, thanks for the recommendations, I read The Cows, Dawn o Porter which was good and now I'm halfway through my first ever Lisa Jewel, Then She Was Gone, which is absolutely gripping me, cannot put it down. Which Lisa Jewel should I go for next?

MinnieJackson · 31/05/2021 08:07

@Hohofortherobbers love Lisa Jewell. I can't find my copy of them she was fine anywhere, need to get again. Her earlier books were a bit different i think, but I loved the house we grew up in. The family upstairs was good too!

I’m rereading the Thornbirds.
