I find myself immediately bored by stories from the perspectives of police/FBI/private investigators. I wouldn't say i dislike the crime genre completely, but I just find a lot featuring those to be done to death.

I would love to get my teeth into a great book though, any ideas?

Loved this, as has everyone I’ve passed it on to.

Have you tried 'The One' by John Marrs?
Or if you like Dystopian fiction I very much enjoyed 'The Girl with all the Gifts' by M.R Carey.
Another one that hooked me recently was 'All the Ugly and Wonderful things' by Bryn Greenwood (TW difficult subject matter though)

IDontMindMarmite · 08/02/2021 10:47

No never heard of it, I'll have a look thank you!

I've just read The Holiday by TM Logan. I finished it the same day I bought it - could not put it down!

Pumpkinandseeds · 16/02/2021 21:56

Also would recommend the Eddie Flynn series by Steve Cavanagh. They're written from perspective of a defense lawyer and are all amazing reads

BabloHoney · 16/02/2021 22:09

Just finished The Push by Ashley Audrain. If you liked We Need To Talk About Kevin you’ll enjoy this one.. it’s so gripping and unsettling, bit far fetched in places but I couldn’t put it down, read it in two days!

Costalatte · 16/02/2021 22:16

I’ve just read The Other passenger by Louise Candlish, absolutely loved it!

vxa2 · 16/02/2021 22:16

Grown ups by Marian Keyes

magicstar1 · 16/02/2021 22:18

@Pumpkinandseeds I love Eddie Flynn, and I have my mother hooked on them too.

Have you read The Clifton Chronicles by Jeffrey Archer OP? They’re a whole series and definitely page turners.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 19/02/2021 22:23

American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins - I was gripped from the start, loved it.

The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff. So interesting as well as gripping.

OhWhyNot · 22/02/2021 23:16

Another vote for American Dirt

I’ve just read Olivia Sudjic’s Sympathy from a few years ago and found it compelling in a claustrophobic way — it’s literary fiction, about a young Englishwoman who obsessively stalks and befriends a Japanese-American writer in New York. Shades of Notes on a Scandal, but done via social media — OS is brilliant on what it’s like obsessing about someone via SM.

Thank you, I can't wait for libraries to reopen, i'm spending a fortune haha.

I just finished Valentina by S Lynes, it was pretty good if perhaps stereotypical.

Annasgirl · 24/02/2021 16:22

OP, I hope I am not too late for you - try reading "The Appeal", so many layers, really innovative storytelling - I read it in 2 days as I could not wait to get back to it when I put it down.

Laquila · 24/02/2021 16:40

I raced through "When No-one Is Watching" by Alyssa Cole - I think that was a rec from here or maybe Instagram. It's tricky to categorise but it's a sort of satirical psychological thriller set in a rapidly gentrifying NY neighbourhood. I don't want to ruin it for anyone but it deals with some really big themes and is very thought-provoking. Blackly comic too.

Laquila · 24/02/2021 16:41

I also enjoyed the first Detective Gamache book by Louise Penny - clever detective stories set in Quebec.

NutellaEllaElla · 24/02/2021 17:05

Never too late! I'm devouring books like nobody's business at the moment

PiggyPlumPie · 24/02/2021 17:09

@Costalatte I just came on to say The Other Passenger!

Couldn't put it down!

Standrewsschool · 24/02/2021 20:20

Reading The Glass House which I’m enjoying.

Also Heatwave by Kate Riordan.

Marking

I like Robert Goddard. Mystery type books sometimes with crime involved. My favourite of his was Caught in the Light. It was a bit far fetched but for me a page turner.

ineedtostop · 14/03/2021 17:42

Agree the 19th Wife. Also similar (but not fiction) Educated by Tara Westover.
