Hi, I love dystopian fiction and would love to read some new books.

Can I ask for any of your recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

@gertrudemortimer

That's what I came on to say! I haven't met anyone else who's read them.
Absolutely loved the Wool trilogy.

The unit by ninni holmqvist.
Station 11
The age of miracles
The wall by John Lancaster

PhantomHawk · 19/02/2021 22:35

Love lots of these mentioned I loved and would also add:

The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi - water becomes a scarce resource with some areas of America siphoning off more than their fair share.

Recursion by Blake Crouch - a form of memory time travel and its implications. Better than his other Dark Matter but that's also worth a go. Maybe more sci-fi than pure dystopia.

Blue Ticket by Sophie Mackintosh - a curve ball as lots of people hate it but I loved it. Girls at the start of their period are given a blue ticket or a white ticket determining whether or not they can have children. It's very sparsely written but I found it haunting and an excellent piece of writing.

The Children of Dust - another curve ball in that it's a children's book. I read it when I was about 12 but it has stuck with me over 20-odd years. The story of three generations of nuclear war survivors and the genesis of, eventually, a new species of human.

The Choice by Clare Wade.

drsambeckett · 21/03/2021 21:50

Station Eleven - couldn’t put it down!
Cat’s cradle -Kurt Vonnegut
Everything by John Wyndham
Man in the high castle
Never let me go
Brave new world
Fahrenheit 451
1984
City of Ember
A canticle for Leibovitz

Word of warning for On the Beach - the ending is deeply disturbing and upsetting and involves a very young child.

Cowbells · 21/03/2021 22:03

I've loved

Station Eleven - Emily St John Mandel
In the Country of Last Things - Paul Auster
Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood
Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
1984 - George Orwell
The Road - Cormac McCarthy
Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

Themadcatparade · 24/03/2021 09:57

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/03/2021 22:31

The Unit is one of my all-time favourite books. @PhantomHawk I downloaded Children of The Dust to my Kindle last year after reading it as a teen. So good.

I came here to recommend one I just finished - Last One At the Party, by Bethany Clift. I really loved it.
