What books would you like to see made...

Into a tv or movie series?

There’s quite a few I would love to see but at the same time, I kinda hope they don’t because no way can a film ever be as good as the books.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas is one I would love to see. But I can’t picture who would play Aelin or Rowan let alone someone like Lysandra or Manon..

Court of thorns and roses by Sarah J Maas would be good too but who on earth would play Rhys?!

It’s so hard...because it would be so nice to watch but I don’t think anyone could do them justice

biteysaurus · 28/12/2020 22:09

I'd love a TV series of Rivers of London

Holothane · 28/12/2020 22:13

Proper version 0f The Physician by Noah Gordon. A full 16 hours worth done properly, Ewan McGregor could play older Rob J Cole, not sure about younger. Barber not sure.

Viviennemary · 28/12/2020 23:24

Tv costume drama type based on Katherine by Anya Seton

SleepingStandingUp · 28/12/2020 23:30

Stephens Kind the Dark Tower series, done properly and true to the book.

Ian Irvine's Three Mirrors series though it's possibly too long to do it all - were at 16?? books. Generally long books too. And the CGI bill would be CRAZY

AnneLovesGilbert · 28/12/2020 23:32

Scott Mariani’s Ben Hope series Grin

CountFosco · 01/01/2021 01:59

Armadale by Wilkie Collins.

powershowerforanhour · 01/01/2021 02:04

Watched a bit of the start of Z for Zachariah the other night. Thought the characters were not as I remembered from reading it at school so googled it and yep, they'd completely and utterly altered the characters and slaughtered the tone of the story. If they made a film of that true to the book and chose the actors very carefully it could be brilliant.

I do entire workings out of who I'd cast and directors and all sorts!

But my most favourite series which would work amazing this way as the writer was an experienced script writer are the sue grafton alphabet books which she absolutely vetoed in life and death and from discussion online with other fans it's clear she was right because we all have wildly different ideas on how it should be done! She also saw how adaptations mutilated and ruined book series in most cases.

Would be wonderful if we could all cast and "film" our preferred versions, with the way tech is going perhaps our grandchildren will be doing this?

I had a book I loved reading as a child. And really wanted it to be made into a book. It was Cold Christmas by Nina Beachcroft. As a young adult I even semi seriously considered buying the rights to it so I could veto it being made but not to my liking Grin. I think it would be considered too old fashioned now. They used to have money for BBC serialisations of children's books but not now so much. Also Charlotte Sometimes could have been great.

I think children's books because at that age they can mean so much to you.

BikeRunSki · 01/01/2021 06:55

The Lionboy books by Zizou Corder
Most Douglas Kennedy novels

@powershowerforanhour - the BBC did an adaptation of Z for Zachariah in the mid 80s. We saw it at school. I know my perceptions will have changed since then, but I remember it being more true to the book than the more recent film.

ChessieFL · 01/01/2021 09:39

The St Mary’s series.

I would also like to see more Jilly Cooper books televised, but I suspect the good ones are all too dated/not PC enough now!

Blackcountryexile · 01/01/2021 17:11

Three Hours by Rosamund Lupton would make a good television drama shown on consecutive nights
I'd also love a documentary based on The Life Project by Helen Pearson. It's about longitudinal studies in Britain and the people that made them happen. I think there would be some fascinating interviews.

A Town... missed the A

BillMasheen · 01/01/2021 17:21

I want a true to the book The Dark Is Rising miniseries, for Christmas, with the first few episodes broadcast on the right days. (Not so important once you get beyond Christmas Day, but the build up from the 20th is brilliant)

I have spent quite some time mulling over the casting.

The film was a bloody abomination.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 11/01/2021 16:37

I want a proper, 1930s version of The Saint. With wonderful cars and beautiful clothes, which actually follow the early books. I hated the versions they’ve done do far.

And I’d like a proper Modesty Blaise, set in the 60s, with weird villains and lots of fighting.

I’m glad Sue Grafton made it clear she wouldn’t let them adapt her books. The film of one of the Sara Paretsky books was beyond woeful.

I agree Three Hours is very cinematic. Reading it is almost like watching a film unfold.

Also the Old Baggage trilogy by Lissa Evans. Her attention to period detail is excellent; it would be good to see it realised visually.

HappydaysArehere · 13/01/2021 10:13

The trouble with this question is that I have had so many disappointments with film adaptations of good books that I am wary of suggesting say the C J Sansom’s Shardlake books!!!

golddustwomen · 13/01/2021 10:44

The book I've just finished 'We Begin At The End' would be a fantastic film.
