I like the way I can get things done around here. I say 'Podcast, please', and lo, it happens. Not at all the case in the Helpline house, as a rule.

But yy to this:
*I think Tom has a natural air of melancholia that he brings to the role which is what majestic him so good, I always think of strike as an essentially melancholy person. Sure he has bouts of happiness but he’s so world weary & expecting of disappointment

*I think that’s another thing with Robin - he’s almost expecting at some point she’ll let him down because everyone does - but Robin never does

Catch me in the right mood, and I'm a can-do sort of person. Whether it'll hit the spot is obviously another matter, but there's plenty to build after the first go, and I'll obviously be open to suggestions.

And now it's time for bed. Bloody sleep, getting in the way. It slowed down my reading of Troubled Blood as well. Tsk.

TB’s the Sunday Times crime novel of the year.

Having never been interested in perfume, I bought a sample of Shalimar because I just had to know what Charlotte’s signature scent was.
It’s gorgeous, powerful, citrus, powdery, rose, sandalwood. It feels very glamorous.

(They also had samples of Flowerbomb, but I didn’t want to smell like Sarah Shadlock!)

I’d never listened to Joni Mitchell before reading TB, but now she’s all over my Spotify - the Court & Spark and Blue albums especially.

I have to say with the amount strike smokes I assume he smells & tastes like an ashtray.....

Yup, I did think the hint of Lavender in his aftershave would have to work bloody hard to be noticed over the smell of ciggies.

His teeth and moustache will be all yellow with nicotine staining too ☹️

For someone so disciplined, Strike is not very good at self-care. I wonder if there is an underlying disregard for himself that fits that slightly melancholic temperament. And if his relationship with Robin will change that as it grows deeper and he starts to entertain the possibility that he does not want to be alone and free anymore.

Empress I have really tried to get into Joni Mitchell, but I just can't. I think I am just too basic to handle her slightly odd melodies.

OTOH I have been a Tom Waits fan since a friend made me an amazing mix tape with some his stuff on when I was a teenager, and keep wavering as to which song of his will be on my finalised Desert Island Disc list.

Ok, podcast made and submitted to the various podcast platforms. It'll be reviewed to check I'm not making calls to rebellion or something before becoming available, but I'll let you know when that is.

Parental - yes I wonder about the lack of physical self care too. He’s an intelligent man, he knows that all he does contributes to making his general health & especially in relation to his leg worse and yet....

It's interesting that he does try and maintain discipline to a degree in TCC, at least at the beginning, by smoking outside, but eventually, perhaps because his self talk is so relentlessly abusive, he stops bothering.

Also the ex army thing will have instilled in him self care self discipline. 'Shit, shower and shave'. Every day starts the same way, even if you're living in a hedgeback.
