I wonder if Kerr is actually a really nice guy in real life. I’d hate to play a horrible character like that if I was an actress. I don’t mean I’d only want to be some über-perfect Mary Sue type character.
There really aren’t any redeeming features about Matthew that I can think of, no evidence of a messed-up childhood or anything like that. Obviously I’m not saying that a dodgy background is an excuse for how he behaves. What I mean is, I wonder why Matthew is the way he is. Maybe there is no explanation and he is just an arse.

EllacottObsessive · 11/02/2021 19:45

Kerr is fab. His interviews show he totally gets Matt, and that he understands his job is to portray a character with a genuine internal motivation. But he has also read the books and is very much on #TeamStrellacott, even though he likes messing about on Twitter entertainingly. I think he's fab.

What? There are redacted versions of the books?

EllacottObsessive · 11/02/2021 20:04

No, I'm taking the mickey of people who insist that there's nowt in the books to indicate more than platonic friendship between Strike and Robin. I even saw one person say Strike views her like a sister, to which the only response must be 'That's not how brothers are supposed to think about their sisters, people'.
I am suggesting that the only explanation is they are reading books with whole chunks missing...

Both his parents seem pretty annoying. Maybe the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

EllacottObsessive · 11/02/2021 20:39

Robin didn't like his mum, and his dad seemed a plonker at the wedding.

OP posts:
EllacottObsessive · 11/02/2021 20:40

And Matt's mum.was a southerner who didn't like any expressions of Yorkshire accent from her kids, so I guess it's reasonable to assume that Matt's desire for the superficially appealing and being concerned with appearances stems from that.

Oh :o

EllacottObsessive · 11/02/2021 20:55

But on a positive note, let's enjoy the fact that Strike really likes it when Robin says 'Bugger!' and the Yorkshire really comes through.

I just want to know why the book covers show Robin only slightly shorter than Strike when he is supposed to be a hulking 6’3er... I’m not exactly short but a good few inches shorter than a friend of his size.

Fair enough about his parents. And I guess there are quite a few men who are pretty controlling/cheaters.

Just come across this thread while looking for others with a similar level of Strike obsession - and here you all are! Have devoured all the audiobooks, the TV series and the wonderful podcasts and just love the characters and world JKR has created. I can listen to the books over and over - find them oddly comforting.I don’t really have anything high-brow to add to the conversation but I have to say I really hope that when TB is edited for TV they don’t cut out the scene with Irene and Janet. I loved those two together and the fart had tears of laughter rolling down my face. How Strike and Robin managed to keep a straight face when that happened (ditto the bit where they interview Betty Fuller and she tells them the reason she had to go to A&E) I’ll never know. Anyway, thanks for the wonderful thread!

EllacottObsessive · 13/02/2021 15:06

100% agree. The farting must stay!

Going back a bit, I can't see the BBC cutting Irene and Janice, their scene when Strike and Robin first visit was when I cracked it. The clue is too good and obvious to miss for the TV adaptation. I can see them skipping Mucky Ricci completely though.

EllacottObsessive · 13/02/2021 15:48

Oh, well done you! I'm usually excellent with twists, and I didn't crack this one. Although, tbf, I was obsessively listening for the plaintive longings of the the two main characters, so I wasn't concentrating as hard as I could have on the case.
