50 Book Challenge 2020 Part Ten

Welcome to the tenth (and final?) thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2020, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, it's still not too late to join, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

The previous threads of 2020:

2
3
4

8
9

I've just checked and these threads this year have moved more quickly than any other year since they started back in 2012! We'd never reached ten threads in any other year.

ShakeItOff2000 · 25/12/2020 08:36

Merry Christmas to all the 50 Bookers! 🎄🧑🏻‍🎄🥂 Well done to everyone for their reading and great reviews this year. This thread really is the best!

StitchesInChristmasTime · 25/12/2020 08:41

Merry Christmas to all 50 bookers 🎄🎄🎄

southeastdweller · 25/12/2020 09:30

Happy Christmas everyone! What books did everyone receive? With my vouchers I'm going to buy the Gabriel Byrne memoir and Victoria Wood biography, both in the Waterstones sale. And a jigsaw.

Merry Christmas!

Quite a good haul now DH has eventually got himself an Amazon account.

I got the Obama book and the Artful Dickens which I am looking forward to reading

PepeLePew · 25/12/2020 09:49

No one is awake here. But as I bought all the books for myself, I can tell you even though they are still wrapped!

Shuggie Bain
Girl in a Band
Burnt Sugar
The Time Traveller’s Guide to Black Holes
There Are Places In the World Where Rules Are Less Important Than Kindness

PepeLePew · 25/12/2020 09:50

Piggy the Obama book is great. I’m finding it much more engaging than his wife’s book, which wasn’t bad. He writes very well.

Piggyinblankets · 25/12/2020 10:32

I will get stuck in soon. Will read Things I Never Knew about Scotland first for some light reading!

Think my new books won't go on my TBR pile but be started straight away otherwise DH will sulk ! Xmas Wink

Palegreenstars · 25/12/2020 10:38

My husband normally takes me to the local Oxfam book shop if he doesn’t buy me a any books. Our local one is superb. So due to tier 4 this will be the first year without a book! He did get me a beautiful framed Virginia Woolf A Room of One’s Own print to go in my office though - and some bookish mugs so very happy.
Happy Reading guys. If anyone is a Brigitte Jones fan there’s a great documentary on iPlayer at the mo.

BadSpellaSpellaSpella · 25/12/2020 10:46

I did exceptionally well for books, I got this penguin gift set
www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/625038/penguin-vitae-series-5-book-box-set-by-various/

And the set of Bloomsbury classics Smile my son thinks I'm hard done by getting books as my main present Grin

Palegreenstars · 25/12/2020 10:48

I love that @BadSpellaSpellaSpella, people not getting that books are the best present

Cherrypi · 25/12/2020 11:10

I received Nigella's new one, seven kinds of people you find in bookshops, a toolkit for modern life and all the swallows and amazons.

Piggyinblankets · 25/12/2020 11:14

I loved the Bridget Jones documentary. Helen Fielding is so much more down to earth (and Northern) than Bridge! Didn't Hugh look young in the films?? I had forgotten. Renee Z swapping between accents was charming.

BookWitch · 25/12/2020 12:05

Merry Christmas 50-Bookers. Xmas Smile Xmas Smile Xmas Smile
I got The Five from DD, and a new Kindle from DH (as instructed) so I'm happy!

bibliomania · 25/12/2020 12:21

The Bridget Jones doc was fab!

Just choc for me under the tree, dd(13) being the present-buyer, but I took myself off on a book-buying spree in advance so lots to enjoy.

Terpsichoreindeer · 25/12/2020 13:35

I only got one book because DH and I aren't really doing presents properly this year. But it was one I wanted - Jonathan Coe's latest, Mr Wilder & Me

Tarahumara · 25/12/2020 15:04

Happy Christmas lovely 50 bookers Xmas SmileWine

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/12/2020 15:53

Merry Christmas and hope everyone is having a lovely day. Not a single book for me this year, which I think is probably the first time ever. I did ask for niche second hand ones though, which are pretty hard to track down.

TheSilentStars · 25/12/2020 16:01

I am cheekily popping in to wish you all a wonderful Christmas. I haven't posted with you this year for various reasons (am serial name changer) but have read every single post along with you, and intend to be with you next year. I realise I read far less, and far worse when I don't post on here!
Thank you for a haven of loveliness and information in a mad mad world, and I'll be with you next week.Wine

BestIsWest · 25/12/2020 16:49

Ooh I will have to look for the Briget Jones doc.

I did well in book related terms

BestIsWest · 25/12/2020 16:50

Posted before I managed to say Merry Christmas everyone.

WillYouStopNamingNutcrackers · 25/12/2020 17:25

Merry Christmas all! I got The Japanese: A History in Twenty Lives and David Bailey's autobiography. Love his photographs but turns out he is a raging misogynist, and I'm only on page 40.

Also got an Amazon echo thingy which I'm going to use for Audible. I have two books to get as part of the free trial and will start with Barack Obama. I would have bought the book anyway but listening to him read it is a bonus (Fleabag, nuff said Xmas Wink).

bettxmascake · 25/12/2020 17:54

Where to start ?

We've had a good day, then we decided to play Trekking. Less said the better. We're watching have I got 30 years for you instead.

A love the dark is rising too, maybe I will look for it for the kindle.

I bought myself The Address Book, The Shark and the Albatross and The Age of Islands which have been on my wish list for a while and all dropped in price.

Happy Xmas to all you lovely book people.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 25/12/2020 18:34
