Welcome to the tenth (and final?) thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2020, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, it's still not too late to join, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

The previous threads of 2020:

I've just checked and these threads this year have moved more quickly than any other year since they started back in 2012! We'd never reached ten threads in any other year.

I've just tried to get on Kindle @Tanaqui and you can't and I am most vexed! She wrote two of the better Point Horrors as well Freeze Tag and Twins

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2020 16:48

Thanks, all. Not read a few of these, so will see what I can find. Have read Alan G and The Family at One End Street. And Marianne Dreams.

Welcome Midnight

Sadik · 29/12/2020 17:27

Just looking at my shelf of children's books - I assume you've read (or don't like) Diana Wynne Jones?

Ditto The Princess and the Goblin / The Princess & Curdie / At the Back of the North Wind? (very Victorian, but charming all the same)

Readingandrighting · 29/12/2020 17:28

R&R I read a lot of self development books too before and during the break up with (now) exDH. With hindsight, I needed less of those and more having actual fun grin (probably easier said than done at the moment - but fingers crossed for 2021!)

I couldn’t agree more with this! I think I’m going to lay off the self-development books in 2021 apart from two I’ve been wanting to complete that are more about life than marriage. It’s interesting how you can become almost expert on healthy relationships while in the throes of a break-up!

I’m looking forward to aiming for 50 books in 2021 — what a fabulous New Year’s intention. I have a long list of books I wish to read; so it’ll be so edifying to tick them off as I go.

It’s interesting to read about other people’s reading choices too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2020 17:33

Yes to some DWJs and to all of the others, Sadik. Victorian and charming is exactly the kind of thing I want though! Or modern with a Victorian setting (Georgian/Regency/other would do).

Sadik · 29/12/2020 17:38

I think Martin Pippin might be spot on for you (I'd say Daisy Field rather than Apple Orchard though).

Some DWJs - does that include the Chrestomanci books? I reckon they're the ones closest to what you're looking for.

I'll have to peer at DD's bookshelves too to remind myself of the ones she's hung onto & not given me back!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 29/12/2020 17:42

Would you not try the Bridgertons Remus? Georgian era. Young Adult. Debutants and Suitors? I have the first one to read. The Duke and I

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2020 17:46

Have got samples of lots now on Kindle, including the Martin Pippin, Chrestomanci book one and Bridgerton book one.

Remus, my recommendation for children's books that you may not have read is Zilpha Keatley Snyder. I loved these as a child / teen, and they're not as well known as my other favourites (probably because she's American).

Hi all

Think my last book of this year is 18. Normal People by Irish author Sally Rooney

Didn’t know there was a TV series based on this, just came across it on BorrowBox.
This book follows the lives of two friends Marianne and Connell from different backgrounds that attend the same school and later same university, their lives are intertwined and their bond helps them recognise their own insecurities/traumas.

Enjoyed this book for a pleasant read although not sure I remember much in a month or two.

I joined this group later on so pleased to have reached 18 and looking forward to see what and how much I will read in 2021.

MegBusset · 29/12/2020 18:16

Hi Reading and welcome to the thread, definitely the best place on MN to hang out :)

Remus sorry if already mentioned but presume you've read Moondial? How about Pullman's Ruby in the Smoke series? I'm also a sucker for Brian Jacques Redwall series and The Deptford Mice trilogy but it depends how you feel about rodents as protagonists Grin

Palegreenstars · 29/12/2020 18:20

Remus I was looking through my old kids books to see if I had anything suitable and I have kept hold of *warriors of Alavana’ by N. N. Browne; it has the required time travel but is probably not Nesbit-y enough for what you are looking for. However, I’ve not thought about it in years and used to love it so thanks for the print to revisit!

Tanaqui · 29/12/2020 18:36

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie, I am not sure which Chrestomanci kindle gives as the first, but Charmed Life is definitely the one to start with (she wrote at least one set before but written afterwards). Magicians of Carron and Witch Week are also (loosely) Chestomanci and from the same era, also very good, but Charmed Life is excellent.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2020 18:41

Thanks, Tanaqui. Charmed Life is the one I got the sample for.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2020 18:46

Read all of those, Meg. Grin. LOVE the Pullman (better than His Dark Materials imo)

Tara - that's new to me. Thanks.

Cassie71 · 29/12/2020 19:06

Hello, I've been quietly stalking this thread for a few days now. If there is a 2021 challenge, I'd like to be part of it. I got plenty of books for Christmas. A year at the chateau by Dick and Angel Strawbridge, the Ballard of songbirds and snakes by Suzanne Collins, illustrated Game of thrones, Dumplin by Julie Murphy and Why mummy's sloshed by Gill Sims

BestIsWest · 29/12/2020 19:10

Welcome Cassie

Midnightstar76 · 29/12/2020 19:34

@Cassie71 I bought A year at the chateau by Dick and Angel Strawbridge for DH( erhem for me really). Looking forward to reading this one.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2020 19:36

Hi Cassie. I read Dumplin' a while back after watching the film. Very nice as an easy feel-good book.
