50 Book Challenge 2020 Part Ten

southeastdweller · 16/11/2020 15:48

Welcome to the tenth (and final?) thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2020, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, it's still not too late to join, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

The previous threads of 2020:

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9

I've just checked and these threads this year have moved more quickly than any other year since they started back in 2012! We'd never reached ten threads in any other year.

Freddie - what a stupid mistake! Grin

Palegreenstars · 17/12/2020 18:44

Flowers betts.

I just finished

56. Started Early, Took My Dog by Kate Atkinson. Which was a reread - she’s really excellent in my opinion and this was a perfect comfort read.
Just seen Barak Obama’s annual favourites list is out so having a nose through those before I maybe commit to a buying ban for a bit in the new year (as is tradition).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/12/2020 19:41

These Old Shades - Georgette Heyer - This was one of the first of hers I read, maybe about ten years ago, and this was the second time of reading it. I remembered some but not all of it, and really enjoyed it. Ah, bah.

I maybe commit to a buying ban for a bit in the new year (as is tradition).

I really need to do that. Maybe next year the thread target could be number of books read that we already own! I think mine will be anyway.

Flowers all round I think.

Palegreenstars · 17/12/2020 20:34

I’m thinking of cataloguing my book collection. I love a spreadsheet and it really annoys me that you can’t sort kindle books by page count. I’d like to do the random number generator thing I know some do on here.

For now I can finally drop everything and read Big Sky which I’ve been so looking forward to.

Palegreenstars · 17/12/2020 20:34

And yes Flowers for all....twice

bibliomania · 17/12/2020 20:48

A book ban! Dear God, we've got Brexit and Dry January to contend with. Is there to be no limit to the suffering?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/12/2020 20:58

I'm with Biblio. There will be no book ban here.

Palegreenstars · 17/12/2020 21:11

The tbr HAS to go down. There’s not much space left. Unless I hide some. My daughter loudly announces in book shops that we have too many books. I normally last til February so we’ll see.

StitchesInTime · 17/12/2020 21:38

I have an embarrassingly large pile of unread books in my home, but I know by now that I’m not going to stick to any resolution about a book buying ban.

I’m relating to this description of tsundoku Wink

OK, how about we tell the government to ditch Brexit, Dry January is just ridiculous anyway and then we can stop book buying between 00:00 and 00:01 on 1/1/2021.

StitchesInTime · 17/12/2020 21:46

Flowers for everyone having a tough time at the minute

StitchesInTime · 17/12/2020 21:48

Now that’s a book buying ban I think I can commit to! Grin

KeithLeMonde · 17/12/2020 21:49

Betts, I wholeheartedly support your proposition

KeithLeMonde · 17/12/2020 21:49

Proposal! I'm tired.....

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 17/12/2020 21:55

No buying ban here not unless there's a support group and a 24 hr crisis hotline on offer

Palegreenstars · 17/12/2020 21:56

😬 reckon the negotiators will listen to the resolutions of 50 bookers and be persuaded

bibliomania · 17/12/2020 22:05

Excellent suggestion, betts.

My reading rate has slowed but my book acquiring rate hasn’t.
A book ban could be the answer but it does not sound as if it would be much fun.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 17/12/2020 22:34
  1. Foundation by Isaac Asimov

Hari Seldon predicts the fall of Galactic Empire and is exiled to Terminus where he builds an Encyclopedia that becomes the Foundation.

How something can be both too simplistically written AND baffling I'm not sure but it totally is.

I only read this because its coming on TV but I think that this alongside Dune fully prove that books about interplanetary politics and scholarly legend are CATEGORICALLY not my forte as a reader

FortunaMajor · 17/12/2020 22:37

Yeah, I'm not buying books either and then I end up with charity shop swag. I'll need to buy another bookcase at this rate.

  1. The Velveteen Rabbit - Margery Williams
I'm made it in to my 40s with never having read this. I know I've got a bloody cheek counting it, but I have read some bricks this year to counterbalance it.

  2. Luster - Raven Leilani
A young black woman gets involved with an older man in an open marriage. Things get complicated and she ends up living with him, his wife and daughter. While this relationship is the main focus of the plot, it's really a vehicle to highlight the everyday racism and micro-aggressions that black women face.
While the plot is a little far fetched for me, the writing is good and it makes its point loud and clear. This was a debut novel and I'll be looking for more by this author.

  3. The Island of Sea Women - Lisa See
Takes place in a remote community of women who dive for seafood and is set against the backdrop of a changing political situation in Korea from the 1930s onwards. It explores friendships between women in a female dominant society.I enjoyed this and found it really interesting. Thanks for the recommendation HumberElla.

Every year I say I’m not buying more books. Every year I fail as soon as the first kindle daily deal email arrives!

It appears that we may be the same person.

InTheCludgie · 18/12/2020 11:32

There's a Kindle daily deal email you can get?? Probably a mistake to set one up, I should probably leave that well alone
