The bit where susie goes into ruths body and makes love to ray really ruined it for me!!
I think it trivialized the story and gave it an edge I didnt like.

I didn't think it trivialised it... I thought that it highlighted the fact that she would never experience anything like that for herself - had me howling anyway

but then again, it doesn't take much

Yh, I kind of got that too, but I felt like it made it almost seedy?

I can see where you're coming from, but I didn't feel that.

I thought it was a lovely, well written book - obviously a weepie though.

I thought it was predictable and rather dull. Didn't make me cry and I will bawl at most things these days.

I liked this book. I don't remember that passage, but I was surprised at how slated the book was on another MN thread recently. Have you read the author's account of her own (partial) recovery from rape? The experience remained very raw for her and The Lovely Bones is, I guess, about a flawed recovery. Amazingly it manages to be quite upbeat.

I loved it, ages since I read it, but I might have to read it again!

I wouldnt say it was a weepie as such, I liked the way it was 'different', At one point she said something about her bones being in a bag on his floor, and the way it was written really struck me.

I completely forgot about that book. Like LLPJ I found it dull.

I think it rates as one of my best ever books. I thought it was brilliant, especially the ending.

Oh I loved it! In fact I came across it at my parent's on saturday and thought I will re read it when I've finished my current book.

Just read OP and yes I agree that bit was not good!

I didn't enjoy it much; not sure I even finished it. The main idea was so attention grabbing, there was nowhere for it to go. The most dramatic thing happened before the story even began, so almost everything that followed was an anticlimax. The suspension of disbelief became too much of an effort for me.

I didn't like it much either. Have lent it to a friend and will not ask for it back.

I enjoyed it but the end was a bit contrived and "Ghost" the movie like!

I gave up on it.

THought it was dire - as did the rest of our reading group. Sorry

Just finished it today, really really liked it, loads more than I thought I would given the subject matter (both the violent aspect and the supernatural aspect).

I quite liked this book - reminded me of 5 people you meet in Heaven.

v readable but essentially just pap!

I liked most of it, but thought the ending was a bit blah and also didn't like the susie/ruth bit.
