Where do you buy your books?

I have a kindle but read a mixture of paperbacks and kindle.

I look in charity shops (pre lockdown) but I have a few specific books I'm after. I'd like to avoid Amazon I think.

Where do you buy your books from?

Try World Of Books

Tinofcurses · 12/06/2020 21:04

www.betterworldbooks.com/

They donate a book for every book sold.

I get loads from Abe Books which are all second hand and you can get some really good deals on there as well as random little treasures!

It works like one big marketplace for loads of small independents that would disappear otherwise.

MrsHoolie · 12/06/2020 21:52

Thanks all. I have a look at these websites.

Have you thought about the local library electronic options? I have access to borrow box , both audio and e-books, using my library login. There is huge selection.
You get access for 3 weeks but can renew. If they have what you are looking for its great. I am reading my way through a thriller series but not sure I would buy them.

Papergirl1968 · 12/06/2020 22:27

I try not to buy books these days - I get the occasional one from a charity shop - but get most from the library.
They have new releases in, they’re free, you can get up to 20 at a time, renew online, and they don’t clutter up the house. Well, they do, but at least they’re only temporarily in the house!
And it’s a good way of discovering new authors. I don’t choose completely at random but I decide that I’ll take a book off a particular shelf and then look to see what takes my fancy.
I love libraries!

Wordery. Reasonable prices and free postage

GoneFishingAgain · 12/06/2020 22:32

Hive. They give a percentage of each sale to a local book shop of your choice.

homemadecommunistrussia · 12/06/2020 22:37

I work at the library, so don't buy many books, but for presents and the odd thing I like to use Hive.

ShipshapeShore · 12/06/2020 22:38

I also used hive recently. Order came quickly and you can choose your local, or any, small bookshop to receive some of the profit. I'd use again, definitely.

Waterstones , WH Smith’s. Charity Shops. And

guineapig1 · 12/06/2020 22:40

Charity shops pre lockdown.
Amazon more than I would care to admit for convenience and I also have an audible sub due to a long commute. Otherwise World of Books is a good shout

CallarMorvern · 12/06/2020 22:43

I try to support Waterstones, as I love having such a good book seller on the high st and the staff are fabulous, I love the Waterstones in Amsterdam.
We have a recycling centre where books are free, so I get a lot from there. Amazon for Kindle and eBay for second hand.

Duckchick · 12/06/2020 22:57

I buy 2nd hand off a variety of sellers on eBay, including BetterWorldBooks listed above and also various charity shops. They seem to have really good buyer protection on 2nd books, I've always been immediately offered a refund if a book didn't meet the description (e.g. ripped or wrong title).

MrsHoolie · 13/06/2020 00:01

@SpringFan I didn't know that you could borrow ebooks. I'll have to look into it. Thanks!

cyclingmad · 13/06/2020 00:23

Tescos, they have some of latest ones out and often two paperbacks for £7

SpringFan · 13/06/2020 09:02

Hi, @MrsHoolieith with BorrowBox , books and some magazines download onto a PC, laptop, tablet or phone. I only use the tablet option.

SpringFan · 13/06/2020 09:05

I am not sure about kindle, a couple of years ago you couldn't but I think the library service may have changed provider.

Cheap books

CountFosco · 14/06/2020 12:28

We have a Waterstones in town so there mainly. Bought from their websitesince lockdown, they do free delivery and came very quickly.

Lyricallie · 14/06/2020 12:30

I have started using my library so much. I miss it during lockdown. I sometimes get some ebooks from Amazon but the libraries online ones are not too bad. They even have audio books online that I have downloaded.

For cook books if I'm not using Amazon I use bookdepository.com

stickerqueen · 14/06/2020 12:33

world of books and ebay. the charity shop is my go-to place for books normally has there 5 for £1.00

megletthesecond · 14/06/2020 12:34

Waterstones. We don't have an independent shop. But tbh our Waterstones staff know their stuff.
