Any good? Just about to start reading it for my book club, not started it yet but already not feeling it for some bizarre reason, tell me it's great, please.

I am so jealous, Thomcat, I'd love an excuse to read it. All my friends say it is AMAZING (though I haven't had a chance to crack it open yet). Hope you enjoy it.

Thomcat · 11/10/2004 23:39

Hi expatkat, glad you've heard good things. Why don't you read it with me and we can discuss it on here together, what better excuse do you need?!!!

That's a great idea, Thomcat. When do you have to read it by? I won't be able to start it for at least another week. I have a book club meeting next Tuesday, and have to read a book called Despite The Falling Snow, which I haven't started.

Will that suit your timetable?

Thomcat · 12/10/2004 00:08

Yes, I'll wait for you, which day do we start it then?

He heeeeeeeeeee, this means I can stay up later on mumsnet as now don't have to go to bed and read!

I can start reading it next Tuesday; or even earlier, if I finish this other book sooner than expected. I'll keep you posted, TC.

fisil · 12/10/2004 08:00

Thomcat, I have a bizarre relationship with that book. I can't say I enjoyed it, but I nevertheless passed it on to my bestfriend to read. She agreed with me that she didn't exactly enjoy it, but that she was glad she'd read it. I have also gone on to read several Margaret Attwood's since (I'd never read any before Blind Assassin). I even went as far as to recommend Handmaid's Tale to my bookclub. We all found it hard work, but it was the most amazing discussion we'd ever had and we all agreed that the discussion enhanced our reading of the book.

The problem with Blind Assassin is the story that is told alongside it - it has to be there, but it is tedious.

expatkat · 12/10/2004 17:14

Does anyone else want to join us for a read/discussion of Blind Assassin? It could just be an informal thing. . .

MummyToSteven · 12/10/2004 17:18

Just the 2 of us Expat, I had a flick when i got in bed last night and I don't think it's going to 'grab' me I have to say, still I'll wait and see. Let me know when I can start!

OP posts:
expatkat · 14/10/2004 23:27

Start it whenever, Thomcat, and I'll try to catch up. I thought I had the book, but I don't--so first thing I need to do is get hold of it from the libray or buy it.

Thomcat · 14/10/2004 23:32

Oh okay babes, might start now then. Don't think you'll have a problem catching up though!

I'll keep an eye out for when you start the discussion and join in

Thomcat · 17/10/2004 18:52

Have you read it already Lucy? What was the overall impression, good or bad?

OP posts:
donnie · 17/10/2004 20:06

it's a good book Thomcat, very intriguing and jigsaw like.Big twist/revelation at the end....read it! I also preferred Alias Grace though!

Freddiecat · 17/10/2004 22:40

Also thought it was great and loads of the mental images from the book are still with me and i read it over a year ago

Thomcat · 18/10/2004 13:00

i've started it. Finding it a bit choppy, difficult to get into early on I have to say. Very descriptive and enjoyable in that way, I just need it to flow a bit more, really short chapters that then it swaps topics altogether. i don't know what's going on at this stage!

OP posts:
lucy5 · 18/10/2004 13:10

I found it hard to get into but enjoyed once I did. My fave is cats eye.

expatkat · 27/10/2004 17:27

Thomcat, I still haven't got hold of it and I know should bite the bullet and get it from Amazon, but I'm overwhelmed at the moment and can't seem to accomplish anything no matter how minor. . .I'm really sorry. By the time I get it read, you'll be saying "been there/done that" but hopefully we can still discuss it at least a little.

expatkat · 27/10/2004 17:28

And meant to ask: are you more into it now?

I'm really struggling. Not that I hate it, or anything, it's just so slow and I want it to be going somewhere. I'm so tired at night that by the time i sit down to readit a very nice, descriptive story isn't enough for me, i need to be hooked to keep reading or i just keep falling asleep. If I had more time on my hands I'd probably be enjoying it more.
